Constantine XI, truly a brave soul who gave his life up for his city, constantinople, new rome, however you want to call it . Whatever side you're on, you cannot deny his choice of leading the last stand, dressed in regular soldier armor rather than any fancy emperor dress, and sharing his last moments with his brothers in arms. The people of Constantionopole called themeselves romans and their empire "Roman empire", they didn't even call it "Eastern Roman empire" but "Roman Empire". *Michael* *Kritovoulos* who was a civil servant and witnessed himself the fall of Constantionopole wrote a diary describing the fall of the city. In all cases he refers the citiziens of Constantinopole as *romans* , he didnt mention anywhere what's so ever the word "greeks". Here is an example of what he wrote in his diary "Now the *Romans* and Giustinianni, seeing the City wall so severely battered and damaged by the guns, both within and without, extended great beams from above the wall, and let down bales of wool on ropes, and placed with them other similar things so as to break the force of the stone balls as much as possible and lighten the effect."

I am more surprised the walls were not completey demolished when the city outgrew the boundery, like so many city walls were demolished in the 19th century. Did the Ottomans leave the walls in their ruined state after they conquered the city? and did they not restore and maintain the defensive construction of the walls? I assume the walls lost their defensive function when Constantiniye extended its urbanisation beyond the walls and that was probably early 20th century. then neglect and harvesting of building material took in. I would like to see a topic of the history of the Theodosian Walls from 15th to 21th century. Could explain the state they now are in, nl that of a messy monument.

The Islamic conquest of Constantinople was a blessing in disguise. If Constantinople never fell, then Europeans wouldn't have gone across the world in boats to create and amass the wealth and glory they did. In fact just 200 years after the fall of the eternal city, Constantinople the New York of it's day became just another city coz the Europeans channelled the trade to India and the Far East through Africa. And this status remains to this day, today Istanbul is not even the capital of Turkey, it just acts as a chokepoint for Russian expanionism and nothing else.
@gjergjcamaj57703 жыл бұрын
@Khairiyah Abd Rahman bro what are you saying. the ottoman empire could care less about religion, and same goes for Turkey. Religion is dying across all nations as countries become modernized and their new gods are technology and social media
@gjergjcamaj57703 жыл бұрын
@Khairiyah Abd Rahman no Islam is being diluted as well. In america muslims will drink alcohol, eat pork, and their women act like the rest of western girls, all religions and cultures devolve to capitalistic mindsets of individuality. What's the point of having the a large group of fake followers. Id rather a few strong then many weak.
@kamion532 жыл бұрын
Indeed a blessing in disguise, maybe for the Europeans, but not that much for the inhabitants of the America's or the inhabitants of West Africa, or those of India and Indonesia. But it is a simplification to state tha the fall of Constantinopel triggered the exploration of the Atlantic. The first Portuguese exploration was already in 1415 and was an extention of the Reconquista. And although the Spanish Empire and the Habsburg empire were at war with the Ottomans, the French and Dutch traded with the Ottomans.
@98bigbutt13 жыл бұрын
@anders94,Why did the Western European Christians raided the city in 1204?
@demirdemirbag31943 жыл бұрын
There was internal strife in Byzantine Empire. There were two contenders for the position of the Emperor. One of the contenders called for help from the Europeans, and the Venetians took those soldiers from Europe to Constantinople with their ships. They helped the contending royal to become Emperor. After this guy became the emperor, he refused to pay the Venetians for their logistic and fighting help. So, they found a way to enter the city and ravage the place. Sorry for the undetailed version of the story (I do not remember the names of the people in the story), but this is the case.

The Empire's military and administration were restructured and adopted Greek for official use in place of Latin.Although the Roman state continued and its traditions were maintained, modern historians distinguish Byzantium from ancient Rome insofar as it was centred on Constantinople, oriented towards Greek rather than Latin culture and characterised by Eastern Orthodox Christianity.

@@lowe_sa2976 Honestly, historian are just pissed of that the roman empire is divided and the part of the empire that last longer itself weren't even western half but the eastern one which is full of greek speaking people. In 5th century under Justinian the great, the roman empire finally reunited with the city of Rome. Navigating through time periods is a weak excuses for them to call it the "Byzantine", even though the city itself was romanized and later renamed as "Constantinople" for 1000 years. The Ottoman turk I recall, called them "Konstantiniyye" and after 'couple' century later after WW1 call it Istanbul.

This is true. But it was a predominantly Greek empire after from 7 th century AD (and it’s official language was Greek, not Latin, which is carefully hidden from museums in modern day Istanbul but very much alive in the collective memory of the Turkish people). Till today, Greeks call themselves “Romios”. Furthermore, “Greek” was considered a follower of the old pantheon, which was severely persecuted to extinction by early Byzantine emperors.
