Build was great to watch. Couple of questions. Why not any insulation between your logs? Why no insulation in cabin? Why not burn underside of deck/porch since insects and dampness collect there? The end result was amazing. I hope it lasts!!

I have watched something like 100 videos of off-grid cabin builds, from start to finish, and I think this one ranks as my favorite of all!!! I absolutely love your "logs." Very reminiscent of the system of locking logs in Finland, with the exception of your logs being a composite of 3 boards, rather than 1 log. This really inspires me to try to do this myself. May you be blessed with years of tranquil moments in your wonderful cabin.

I live in the north of Scotland and my home is a log cabin made from Douglas fir. It’s like the three pieces screwed and glued at the start of this video but it’s made by carved long logs. It went together like Lego. We built in 2004 and it still looks lovely. The log walls are gorgeous inside. They’re sprayed with a clear fireproofing agent that will let naked flame burn for 2 hours without damaging the wood….we had to get that in order to get mortgage and insurance.

@rjay5506 9 ай бұрын
@@roberttaylor8261 yeah I was thinking about the electrical, you could leave a gap in the middle 2x8 for wiring when your building it though but hard to go back and do for sure. I do a lot of foundation repair and see a lot of things that would have been real easy and cheap to do when they were building the house but is very time consuming and expensive to fix now that its done.😂

You have crafted a beautiful cabin, very talented young man. We just moved into ours and built on a bedroom and bathroom. It is 20x36 now and our retirement home. The first build was 20x20 total cost 8,600. then when building supplies were at the highest the 20x16 cost 21,000. Unfortunately we had sold the farm and had no choice. We lived in the cabin with no running water for 5 months. At 73 and 75 we saw it as an adventure. Enjoy your cabin for many years to come

I am glad to see others can show that necessity can overcome many adversities. I turn 75 in a few months and plan on building and moving to a log structure as I sold my house, and thought apartment living would see me out. But, with rent eating up a good portion of my modest income, and other expenses reducing my cash reserves from the sale of my house, I can see I need to find a cheaper place to live. A 20 x 24 log cabin is in my plans, and it will be built using this man's fantastic design as I can't afford to have someone build me one. This is a great alternative and, although I am sure I will have many, many aches and pains along the way and all my old injuries will be screaming at me to quit, I will just look forward to sitting on my front porch in the woods, or in front of a cozy wood fire on a cold winter night and thank God he gave me the strength to finish. I lived for over a year with a composting toilet, and hauling water. Seeing that others in my age group have done it will inspire me. Thank you.

Dont give up! Best of luck and I just turned 65 last week. Im also itching to get a mountain lot and similar build. I did it before at 30 years old, but my mistake was building it on a friend’s land. They said I could stay ten years, but after seeing how beautifully it was built, gave me three months to move on. … so they could move in. Live and learn. I just sold our ocean cruising sailboat Dec 31st, and hope to buy land, build cabin, and move in before Dec 31st this year. You know, his small timbers will save our backs.

Specially for Texas where I live the temperatures are not extreme.I would think for Florida would be great I am a retired aerospace engineer so I can design it off hand in CAD system and work all issues before hand by building assemblies before hand using the modeling. Would be like installing leggo. I would make it larger include all room I need. Use simpson brackets everywhere to facilitate building by one person. I love it, very nice. I noticed that phenomenon too, where recently I bought 2x8x12s & they were about within 5cents of a 2x6x12. I really like the rusty metal roof & the weathered exterior. I’ve always had a fascination with old rural outbuildings & cabins too.

This has got to be the best cabin built video I've seen yet (and I've watched a ton of them). The idea itself was brilliant, but your presentation and a great narrating voice just sends it over the top. It feels like you go the extra mile to make sure that anyone who wants to try it for themselves has pretty much all the visual aid they would need. Quick question- you mentioned you bought the 2x8's before the price fleecing happened- how did you store them to keep from warping and twisting? All I have within an hour from me is Lowes, and I swear their stuff will twist up on the ride home!

I am glad I found this marvel. I look forward to watching the entire series for the details. You have fulfilled an old dream of mine. At 71, I shan't be fulfilling it for myself, but seeing the marvelous work (obviously after a great deal of thought and planning) and creativity that is displayed here is sufficient for my old bones to be content with knowing that it can and has been done.

@@benkordus886 That's always an important question if you're interested in staying legal. Fortunately I live in Indiana, which has the log cabin rule. If you build it yourself, for yourself, you don't need a building permit (meaning no code restrictions).

This is awesome! Thank you for sharing your journey on this venture. The one thing I would’ve done after putting down the subfloor, was building up a higher rim around the exterior in which the grooves lay in. That way I could build up the subfloor with bubble foil insulation on the floor and provide additional insulation. Strips on that and then flooring nailed to the strips, would allow for a warmer floor. We always see things after the fact, don’t we? You should draw plans and market them. This is a realistic enterprise for anyone to work at and make reality. I’d love to build this for my family.

Don't build this in Alaska! This construction does not have any insulation between boards. The heat not only escapes through the slots but when it meets the cold air it will condense inside the walls. This house will rot inside walls in a couple of heating seasons. Although I like the video!
