I had replace the bandwheel bearing on the wood mizer lt40 sawmill after it began to howl! This is how I did it.
Doing your own maintenance on the wood mizer lt40 is just part of running a portable sawmill business and this was my first band wheel bearing that went bad so I had to replace it. I didn't see many videos on how to replace it so I made this one for anyone in the same situation as I was! Hope it helps someone.
Here is a link where I found several of these bearings:
www.bdiexpress...
The Koyo 5309 was the recommended bearing at a good price and I see them here at $119.45 however they list several alternatives including the Timken at $177.00
Amazon also has alternatives but I don't think I'd use those bearings as quality is important on a sawmill! I'll be ordering a Koyo since the Machine Shop thought they were a good alternative that wasn't 5 times the cost of the Wood-Mizer Peer bearing.
My website www.manleyporta...
Check out some of the things I use in my daily work on the sawmill (or in editing these videos and making them). Thanks!
amzn.to/3ONBa4b -- Anchorseal 2 -- it's what I use!
amzn.to/3kqIUuY -- my big cant hook
amzn.to/3LvOvfm - my small cant hook

Those bearing are a close/tight tolerance press fit in the wheel hub. anti-seize would have done NOTHING to help. You can warm (200-300F) the wheel hub up and sometimes drive them out, and it makes it easier to press them in. You can use a couple c-clamps and pieces of angle iron to clamp together and push the bearing in, then use a spacer between the bearing and the angle, so you can keep pushing the bearing in. it also helps if you install the retaining ring and push the bearing to the ring, unless there is a lip on the hub that the bearing seats against in the hub. in that case, you just push the bearing in till it seats against that lip. as for the amount of slease you used on the idle shaft, yea, you used WAY to much. a little, as you said, goes a LONG way. as for the torque on the bolt allen head bolt, 150 should be inch lbs, NOT ft pound for that size bolt. im sure there is a standard torque chart for bolts on google, BUT!!!!!, there is a tq chart in the lt40 parts manual for your year model, page 6, and item 5 on page 20, 3/8-16 which is 40 ft lbs, or 480 inlbs (40x12=480). gorilla torqing things on like that will only lead to threads being stretched and material fatigue, which could lead to failure at the most inop time (in the field)

I was hoping it was like my older LT30 with pillow block bearings on the back side of the wheel. Mine are starting to sound like gravel :/

It wasn't too bad ;) The lesson I learned was: take off the wheel, take it to the machine shop, let them deal with it and then take it back and put it on (the right way)!

@@TheOldJarhead it's convenient, but the damn storage rate is a killer 😏 using a machine shop when in doubt was probably smart. I imagine fracturing that cast wheel wouldn't be too hard. Good video!

Yes the darn storage fees suck! I mean really, I found it there after all! ;) And yes, I was worried about damaging the bandwheel so went with the smart choice! Thanks!

It was to dark to see you put it on backwards, could not tell for sure until about 13:47 then I saw it was on backwards. You said that was a wood mizer bearing correct ? Wood Mizer with china bearings? I guess i need to start looking for a replacement that is made in the USA. I have been binge watching your videos, now that i am back from vacation, so I hope i am not to late on the comments. lol

Yup, they use a Chinese Peer bearing. In the description below there is a link to buy better ones. I am not affiliated or sponsored by them, it's just a link I found. And you are always welcome to comment no matter how d the video!

Thanks! I've been putting this job off for a while. The woodmizer book that came with the mill fell apart at the bindings and is in pieces scattered around our mill, so I was going to get a quick walk through from WM by phone. Rainy day today, so I figured I'd dive in....then found your video which was really helpful. I've replaced the drive wheel bearing, and many other parts....just always hesitant to dig in. We have an electric lt50 with 8000+ hr and a lt40 with almost 12k!

I'm glad you found me and that I could help motivate you! Good luck with the bearing replacement! Some go easier than others! Your mills have a LOT of hours, but that's why I bought my 1st one over 12 years ago! They just keep on milling! Cheers!

Replaced the band wheel with the back side facing out? I was thinking marking the front of the wheel might have been a good idea before pulling it off. Great video.
