Even though I started really playing and understanding yugioh around the beginning of xyz era, these were always legends. One of the things I always think is super cool is how the 'chaos' deck isn't a true archetype as we see them today which makes the deck feel so much cooler.

MTGDog thank you! I have always been passionate about yugioh cards, even when they were relatively worthless. I actually think it’s a shame that they’re so expensive now due to investors and speculators trying to make a buck on something they aren’t passionate about. Makes it near impossible for true collectors out there to pick up old school cards at an affordable price. I hope investors lose interest soon and prices drop for the true collectors!

Would love a video discussing the differences between the original Unlimited print runs of sets like LOB, MRD, PSV etc vs the reprinted versions. I have heard you mention the reprints a few times and would love to be able to spot the differences myself. Been out of the game since around 2005 and didn't even know they were reprinted until you mentioned it in one of your vids. I've hunted around online but can't find anything to help, thanks! Also, does the reprinting of these unlimited runs explain the extremely low value of unlimited holos? being able to pick up iconic holos from 2002-3 for a couple bucks or even a few cents seems crazy to me and would love to hear more about that in a video. I feel they're undervalued! Thanks for all the great content :)

I'm in a very similar situation as you, an older player who is hunting down older cards for nostalgia and I have noticed that the reprinted versions have considerably lighter textboxes and a slightly larger artwork and the newer holos are more "reflective/shinier" than the older ones. The best bet is to go on eBay and buy single listings when there is only one available with photos. i.e. If you google Monster Reborn 1st edition LOB, you will see that it will say, "Magic Card" and the textbox will be a rich green. Then google Monster Reborn Unlimited Edition LOB, and you should see that it will say, "Spell Card" with a pale green textbox. I hope that helps you.

@@14reasons58 I play both duel links and master duel and I always like to challenge myself to build decks using only old school summoning methods. No links, no synchros, no XYZs. I allow myself fusions and generic special summons and that’s it. I use classic trap cards like negate attack, mirror force, and magic cylinder (on MD since they aren’t in DL). It’s a lot of fun to play and while I don’t win all or even most of my games (I would say I have a better win rate on master duel than duel links), I like the fact that old school decks can still compete with the new stuff.

Totally disagree. No archetypes, no banlist, no overall strategy beyond just play a bunch of chaos monsters and broken spell cards. Total degeneracy with no room for creativity and skill expression. Modern yugioh has so much more room for creativity with deck building. If you think playing cards like pot of greed and being able to Yata lock kids is Yugioh at its peak than so be it but I'm good on that

Awesome Deck. I run a similar one. But I also use Jinzo and Airknight Parshat as Tribute Monsters. Airknight is for extra drawing power and Jinzo is there as an 2400 Beatstick and for Trap Negation. It is great to have Jinzo and BLS on the field and have free attacks on your opponent. I also run DMoC but I just use him if I can Special Summoning him with Monster Reborn. Or I have Sangan, Witch, Spirit Reaper on the field and Change of Heart/Snatch on hand. I dont summon him with two tributes. For my Dark Monsters I run Don Zaloog for Hand Destruction and Spirit Reaper as Stall Defender and rarely Hand Destruction. My Light Monster are Airknight, 2x MoF, DDWL, Bounder. Later I added Blade Knight for an MoF when it was released in October 2004. For my Spells i run Heavy Storm, Confiscation and United we Stand. BLS + United we Stand is a Matchwinner. I never run 3 copies of MST and Mirage because of space reasons. I dont want to have more then 40 cards in my Deck. For my Traps I use Torrential Tribute and Magic Cylinder. But they are so many great cards that I want to add to my Deck but then I have to put more then 40 cards into it.

minus mad dog, minus 1 kycoo, minus 1 reflect bounder. Add 1 mystic tamato, add 2 don zaloog. Side board in the 2nd kycoo if you really need the control further in a best of 3. 3 DD warrior lady is fine, but many opted for just 2 and used a a spirit reaper. Often times a spirit reaper was the only wall keeping you alive for a turn or 2. I topped a regional myself in 2004 during this format. I quit when they dropped the banlist. I ran 3 soul release in my side deck along with 2 kycoo. One of the smoothest starts was setting a reaper just for them to ram into with no fissure/snatch/change in hand. A simple fissure into a heavy storm or duster with a don drop and you just gutted up to 2 cards from their hand. Also if you are running tamato/angels with like a single scapegoat you are in the market for a creature swap or 2. Ramming into your own tamato to pull out your own don or DDlady priceless.

One of my brothers who are 22 or 23 used to have the oldest versions of Yu-Gi-Oh cards, and after he told me he had them, he told me he lost them cards and I mean he lost all of the cards he had back in the 2000s and after he told me that, I was expecting him to still have them so he can give them to me for entertainment, because I never lose cards from my sight but nope he had to lose them cards. Back then there was no limit on the size of the fusion deck so you’d just play 3 of every fusion that could theoretically matter. The most common ones to SS with Scientist in this deck are Balter, Senshi, TER.

The last deck that won me a nationals except i had 3 Cyber Dragons in mine + Tomato’s. Pretty simular though ran Sakuretsu Armor and a smashing ground too, side deck to counter burn decks. As soon as Synchro cards came out i quit the game. Good memories from this video though.

@@nintendokings Chaos sorc wasn't used until after the banlist to replace CED. Mad dog/archfiend soldier provides much needed pressure on your opponent for when you don't have a beat stick or chaos monster to summon, especially because this deck uses so little trap support. Not running feather duster is absurd! At least one of the MSTs is dedicated to your Mirage, so that leaves two MSTs (hopefully one for your opponent's Mirage before they get the effect off) and one duster to use on your opponent's backrow. And not every deck is built this way; some people ran magic cylinder, torrential tribute and solemn judgment. So Duster is ESSENTIAL in this format, especially if your opponent actually uses traps beyond the staples.

Also never said he should run Chaos Sorc, just that I consider it one of the three 'Chaos' monsters. And I don't see the need for Mad Dog. Maybe side deck if your opp is running lots of 1800 or 1900. But other than that the 100atk boost over, say, a third Kycoo and its effect is not really worth it. What ''much needed pressure'' is this extra 100 when you could in stead have a great effect? Or I'd run Don Zaloog over Mad Dog, weaker beater but incredible effect.

You’re not understanding what pressure is. It’s not just having 100 more attack. This is a game of resources, so when your monster destroys your opponent’s (like mad dog over opponent’s kycoo) that leaves you with +1. You destroyed your opponent’s resource and still have yours. The 100 life points in damage means almost nothing. If you only run kycoo and your opponent has one on the field then what? You run your kycoo into your opponent’s? That’s a waste of a normal summon and you don’t plus. That’s why mad dog is useful. It pressures your opponent to do something about mad dog’s presence on the field during their turn, while offering an out to their kycoo on your turn. And no way I’d not run 3 MST. That gives you less of a chance to use Mirage for hand advantage. Con isn’t worth that. If anything I’d sub a monster for con but it’s really not an essential card. Especially if you draw it beyond 3rd turn. It’s a dead draw late in the game (as is any hand destruction) and since it’s the worst of the three, it’s the odd man out. Though I would def side deck it

​@@TheOldSchoolExpert I know it's not just about 100atk... But most 2004 chaos decks I've seen don't run many 1800 (or 1900) monsters. Usually max 2 Kycoo (and a Breaker). So you're running Mad Dog in the hopes of running into these 2-3 cards of your opponent to get that +1. When you could, say (not that you should), run another Kycoo and have almost the same potential to beat over your opponent monsters, plus the amazing effect. Kycoo's effect has more potential to create a +1 than Mad Dog running into an opponents Kycoo. If most decks only run two 1800 beaters or fewer, Mad Dog isn't worth it. Which is also why I think rarely see 2004 chaos decks run Mad Dog. I'd take it out for Confiscation or perhaps even Berserk Gorilla if you really want that pressure (just isn't chaos fodder). And with 3 MSTs, if you'd play against yourself, MST will often be a -1 without Mirage. So against your exact deck I'd prefer 2, but tbf most decks run more traps so I think 3 is fine too. That's the fun of having different Chaos decks.

17:09 So to be honest, as someone who hasn't played this game or any TCG in over 15 years now, banning cards seems a lot like putting on a bulletproof vest after you're already shot. Mistakes happen, but how can the people who make these cards not know the power these cards will have until after they're released. Maybe 1 or 2 overpower cards can slip through the cracks, but with the number of banned cards it seems the card designers sucked at their jobs.

I’m not sure they sucked at their jobs. There will always be power creep in yugioh because there is not cycle, everything is legal except a small fraction of cards on the banlist. You can’t just start making cards weaker once you realize they are overpowered because no one will use the weaker cards and the game will never advance. You also can’t predict the future and know which cards will be a problem in the future. Especially when older cards are used in combination with newer cards in ways never imagined. It’s why you have stuff like Card of Safe Return on the banlist (rightfully so) even though it was a garbage card back in 2003 and was garbage until like 2009 when the game evolved to the point where it was broken. Just my thoughts 👍

How come you didn't list the cards that were in the extra/fusion deck? You have magical scientist. I know that requires cards in the extra/fusion deck. So why didn't you list them, and can you list them now please?

Because with magical scientist there are about a million cards you could put in the fusion deck but only a handful that are relevant (TER, Balter, Ryu-Senshi, Fiend Skull) and that's about it. There's no strategy/tech to the fusion deck with Scientist so no need to include it.

A few years ago my homies and I would do tournaments with just us. 8 of us. We would take turns with rules in the tournament. Example: no special Summons. No more than one copy of each card. No xyz or synchro. Pretty fun. Everyone would put in 15 dollars. 1st and 2nd place would get money from pool.

It kind of is being picky but man xD technically it is a better card and by that period of the game, Fiends have better support than Beasts even if it was niche like Dark Ruler Hades and stuff like that, Beasts didn't get that kind of treatment until the last DM era booster pack in Flaming Eternity, underrated set btw.

@@chimeratcg07 It does matter quite a bit actually, 1400 vs 1500 is a big difference when almost every deck had 3 DDWL. It wasn't uncommon to see Book of Moon in the era and DDWL just kills Mad Dog in defense while you would have to trade with Archfiend Soldier. Neither Archfiend Soldier or Mad Dog should be in the list. It's much better off being a Confiscation. The format is defined by how strong your Turn 1s are. If you are going first and open with any of the 3 hand disruption spells you're way ahead. The only battle that was going on in this format was with DDWL, Breaker and Sangan/Witch pokes. Mad Dog and other 1900 attack monsters were a relic from earlier times when Gemini Elf was good. Casual players used them way past their expiration date due to being comfortable/familiar with that style of play when in reality cards like Mystic Tomato were much better as they turbo'd you into your Witch/Sangan into Sinister/Yata plays, but due to the lack of real event coverage, and very primitive message board activity streamlined decklists weren't as easily shared or copied like they are today. It was easy to absolutely dominate local competition if you had the right decklist, and game theory. It's why early competitive play was dominated by Team Comic Odyssey and a bit later on Overdose. They had a better fundamental understanding of how to win, and translated that into their decklists which crushed the more casual players who were still holding onto relics like Mage Power, United We Stand, and vanilla beatsticks.
