Prof. John Milbank and Dr Simon Oliver discuss one of the most significant developments in English-speaking theology in the last 20 years. 'Radical Orthodoxy' emerged from the writings of John Milbank -- and here the man himself discusses some of its basic ideas.

It's exciting stuff...I've been thinking along these sort of lines myself (honest!). But why are they keeping it so quiet? I'm middle aged, a Christian and philosophy graduate, and yet even I am only just finding out about this, and only by accident because Catherine Pickstock wrote a foreword to a book about Eric Gill. They need to do more to get it out there.

If it helps any I picked up a new 'influence' Hans-Georg Gadamer. Looked him up on Wikipedia - 'sharp chap'! Like you I learn a lot through the people who influenced the ones I admire. Good luck and Gods peace!

Impressive...think the old liberal theology is finally running its course..the post-war trauma and the wave of relativism is passing and cooler more far-sighted views are emerging. It is very refreshing.

"Revelation is only ever mediated by the liturgical. It is only when we begin to worship that God speaks to us. " I'm not sure what he is saying here. God only speaks to us in the context of a church service?

William S. Listen to what he says right after, he basically says that all things are liturgical, he’s not talking about church services but a type of mystical understanding as God in everything.

Perhaps St Evagrius of Pontus put it better: "If you are a theologian you will pray. If you pray you are a theologian indeed."

It has to do with the importance of you becoming more "relevant to God," rather than the other way around

Dude what is he talking about? What is radical orthodoxy? Does anyone pretend to understand what Jonny just said? This was nothing but a collocation of philosophical categories. 1 star: boring, confused, and boring.

No wait. I was only halfway through the video on that first comment, and I’ll admit my comment was a bit premature. It actually gets worse; it gets more empty, more confusing, moving closer and closer to nothingness.

Glad you said it, I was feeling like a complete idiot. It’s silly of me but I imagine Jesus sitting here looking similarly confused…

Philosophers like Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Heidegger grappled with the crisis of modernity. Conservatives think the solution is "to go back" to a time before modernity via Aquinas, Augustine, Plato, and Aristotle. Leftists try to construct a philosophy of the future called postmodernism and they end up cosigning questionable actions (like being against age of consent). So the aim of radical orthodoxy is similar to the Kyoto School. They aim to overcome modernity by going through it and at the same recovering their traditions.

Yes, I understand what he is talking about. He is saying that it is a mistake for philosophy and theology to think they can or should take over the methods and mindset of empirical science. You don't get to give stars btw. Maybe start with something simpler?...
