How To Decoupage Mini Terra Cotta Pots With Fabric Using Mod Podge
by Jennifer and Kitty O'Neil
Running With Sisters
Materials
Mini terra cotta pots
Spray paint primer, white
Plaid Martha Stewart Crafts Multi-Surface Acrylic Craft Paint Surf #32016
Flat paintbrush
Outdoor Mod Podge
Tissue paper
Pencil
Scissors (We like Fiskars Easy Cut scissors and highly recommend them! ► amzn.to/2Lryeyb )
Fabric (We used Amy Butler Love Tumble Roses and Eternal Sunshine)
Straight pins
Steps
1. To get started, prime the little pot with white spray paint primer.
2. Next paint the outer rim and inside of the pot with blue craft paint. Use the flat side of the craft paintbrush to get a sharp line under the lip of the pot. Leave the sides of the pot white. This is where the fabric will go.
3. Make a template for the fabric. To do this, wrap a piece of tissue paper around the pot. Use a pencil to make the tissue under the lip of the pot and around the bottom edge of the pot. Mark the ends too, where the tissue wraps around to the beginning.
4. Use the straight pins to attach the tissue paper to the fabric. Be sure to select a portion of the fabric you want to show on the pot. Cut out the fabric around the template.
5. The last step is to decoupage the fabric onto the pot using the Outdoor Mod Podge. To do this, paint a generous layer of Mod Podge around the sides of the pot. Carefully line up the fabric on the pot and press it onto the pot. Use your finger to press out any wrinkles.
6. Finally, coat the outside of the fabric with Outdoor Mod Podge. Also paint the lip and inside the of the pot with the Mod Podge. Let dry.
Wouldn't these make a sweet gift planted with herbs or succulents? Let us know if you make them!
Happy Crafting,
Jennifer & Kitty

Great video! Thank you. TIP: After to make your template on your tissue paper, make a more permanent template on plastic, especially if you are going to do many of this size pot. A great source for plastic to make the template is the Dollar Store cutting mats in the kitchen tools section. I use these plastic cutting mats to make applique templates for quilting.

I use gallon plastic water bottles for a plastic template if it's small enough. Sometimes I use take away foam food containers and cut them up. Thanks for the video! I used this method on a pillbox hat once, it wasn't easy!

I already have mini pots on hand and I also have enough fabric to open up a fabric store. I do not know if I would go out and buy the mod podge for my pots as most of my plants are already potted in nice pots bought several years ago and they are al large pots but, your idea gave me an idea to make pin cushions to sell at my craft sale. I usually paint the outside of the pots or stencils them or glue buttons all around but, I think fabric would be cool with the same fabric or different on the cushion top. I put very fine steel wool under the fabric instead of polyfoam because it keeps your pins sharp nd some pins if in a damp climate can rust and steel wood keeps them clean from rust. The fabric you used was beautiful and the 3 pots together were awesome looking. The Dollar Tree and Michael's have nice little artificial poseys that would look nice in your pots too stuck in florist foam. Or get some florist foam and some little US flags from the Dollar Tree and cover it with patriotic fabric and make a few to go down the middle of your picnic table on 4th of July. Make enough for how ever many guests you are having and then let them take the pot home when they leave. Sincerely, Rebekah in Alexandria, VA

Hi Tamara, So sorry you are having trouble finding terra cotta pots. You might try Michael's or another craft store. We got these small ones at Dollar Tree. We see that you can also buy them from Amazon: amzn.to/3e424Et According to the fabulously helpful Mod Podge Rocks website, Mod Podge may or may not work well on plastic. They recommend doing a test to see if the Mod Podge will adhere properly to the plastic surface. modpodgerocksblog.com/the-7-steps-to-perfect-mod-podging-every-time/ Good luck! Jennifer & Kitty

Thank you so very much for making this tutorial. I recently got hold of a gorgeous floral piece of fabric and was oscillating between taking up needles (which I hate) and decoupage. Does this work with a lighter fabric like chiffon? If it does I'm all set!
@TheONeilSisters

It should work with chiffon, but you might want to test a piece to make sure! Jennifer & Kitty

For the template wouldn't it have been easier to measure the top and bottom circumference from a straight line drawn down the pot and measure the depth of the area as the tissue paper is just cumbersome. What I did notice is the curve of your template, is that why it's better to use tissue paper.?
@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Corinna, Because the top of the pot is bigger around than the bottom, it doesn't work to cut out a rectangle template. So we use the tissue paper to get a true tracing of the pot. It ends up being curved. You can see a photo of the template in the how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/decoupage-mini-terra-cotta-pots-fabric/ Hope that helps! J&K

Pardon me. .. yrs ago I tried Mod Podge BUT, it didn't dry, stayed tacky. I do live in a very humid environment (So. FL.). One more question (pleeZe!); can you apply a sealer even when you think you'll only use an item indoors?
@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 5 жыл бұрын
Hi TreeZa! We are from Tampa, Florida originally. We know that humidity well! We would recommend letting the Mod Podge dry a good long time, like 3 days. Indoors would be best. And yeZ you can use a sealer, although Mod Podge is a sealer in iteself. Here are the step by step instructions on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/decoupage-mini-terra-cotta-pots-fabric/ J&K

@@TheONeilSisters You're so kind to reply!! Yay Florida, huh! Yup, I realize Mod Podge IS a sealer in itself (I guess most glue-type things are) & yup, I let it dry like forever & it stayed tacky - oh well. Lol! Anyway, I've answered you before checking out the site you mentioned but, will definitely do it. Just bought a new house Nov. 2 & have lots of projects I want to try so, PURRfect timing! When doing tutorials it would be wise to have all your steps done beforehand instead of waiting for paint to dry. Wisdom would have had several pots in all stages of the project as you are doing stages for the camera. Too much wasted time.
