Professor Organic Chemistry, thank you for an outstanding explanation on How to Identify the Number of Lone Pairs on an Atom using Formal Charge in Organic Chemistry. I also encountered this beautiful topic in General Chemistry. This is an error free video/lecture on KZbin TV with the Organic Chemistry Tutor.

At this point, I'm convinced we can all get our degrees by purely watching this man's videos and skip classes💯

I got an A in physics just by using his videos, i only attended one lecture during the entire semester because it was mandatory.

Now I have two equations: Lone Pairs = [Ve - ( Fc + Bonds)] ÷ 2 And Lone pairs = [ Ve - 8n - 2m] ÷ 2 where n is the number of non hydrogen atoms attached and m is the number of hydrogen atoms attached. Would you please make a distinction when to use which one. I bet the first one will be used when a charge of an atom from the molecule is to be found, and the second one when there are domains attached on a central atom.

But how do I know the carbon with the negative charge only has one hydrogen?
