As other commenters have pointed out, this video misses some key nuances of general and multiple intelligence. Also, it felt like the narrator was projecting personal opinions onto what should be an objective presentation of the state of the field. More concise, accurate, and objective videos out there, especially for MCAT prep.

Okay, Spearman didn't only have a g factor. He also had a specific or s factor, well multiple s factors.So he believed there was one g factor and multiple s factors. Also spearman later admitted to the existence of numerical, spacial and verbal group factors

An anecdote from my school: One time, our psychology professor had the entire class do IQ tests. Almost everyone could be considered pretty smart since it was the top tier public school. We turn in the tests and after multiple countings, it turned out no one in the room except the professor had less than 140. Why? Because it was a team effort. People were shouting wrong and correct answers left and right so much that even the people who didn't want to cheat overheard the most of it. As a rule, people who didn't help or accept help had the lowest scores. The moral of the story? People are social animals. We work best and are sometimes smartest in large groups. Sometimes, however, we can be stupid as a lamp post.

If you do an IQ test you can't have help from other people because it defeats the purpose of the exam, which is to know your own intelligence. If you analize your anecdote you can divide the class in 3 kind of people: 1) THE CHEATERS: these are intelligent in the way they know they don't have the capabilities to do the exam, which by the way knowing that you don't know it is a trait of intelligence. Instead of doing the exam by themselves they used others intelligence to solve it. Also this being a clever use of intelligence. However they aren't intelligent in the sense of them not admiting they can't do the exam and they cheat to have a high and flawed score. This leads us to the second ones. 2) THE HONEST ONES: these are more intelligent than the cheaters because they admited that their capabilities are not enough, by doing that they can learn what they don't know. That is because, if you think you know everything, why you would bother or aim to learn more? 3) THE INTELLIGENTS: these are the real intelligents, the ones that did the exam and which everyone had their right answers from. Now I have to make an important distinction. Intelligence is not the same as knowledge. The first one, you are born with it, the second one, you can acquire it. That's why practicing for an iq test does little help, why? Because if you "prepare", you only know how to solve problems that you solvedwhen practicing, but what happens if you go to the exam and the problems are nothing similar? Intelligence is the ability to solve problems and applying the knowledge you know. Mozart, Einstein, Bach, Darwin, Gauss, and the list goes on, are known because they achieved extrodinary feats that changed history. But, there are a lot of people that study in the same fields and they couldn't make the same level of achievement. That tells you something about the intelligence. Now, the whole comment it is a personal opinion, subjective and could be wrong. Here is the moral of my comment: People shouldn't let themselves believe they can't achieve extrordinary feats because a number, sometimes lower than others, dictates it. Real intelligence is to use what you have to solve problems that present in your life. Cheers and have you all a meaningful life. :) (P.S: English it is not my mother language so I may have did some grammar mistakes.)

@@hartnathan97 @Nathan Hart Nonetheless, we need to focus on Emotional Quotient rather than Intelligence Quotient! Coz the students who are beginning with their schooling this year are going to end up having jobs which aren't discovered yet! So the whole concept of competition just collapses!! Talkin'about copying, though the person copied the text from somewhere(if he did), he unknowingly or knowingly spreaded this bit of information to others about which I also got aware!

I see there being an underlying intelligence potential (g-factor) that can be harnessed to learn many if not all these multiple intelligences. That is why intelligences seem to correlate while there are still anecdotes of people not doing well in some areas of intelligence while doing well on others: because they haven't actually practiced some of these areas using their g-factor. This g-factor also needs to be trained somewhat at a very young age, though.

I was really hoping there would be some mention of the difference between education and intelligence. There have often been sudo-science IQ test that measure education and call it intelligence. People often think just because they have advanced degrees they are intelligent when really it is more about memory, playing the game, and/or money. Having intelligence helps navigate these systems but if you have a poor memory or are lacking in motivation your status in academia will likely suffer. I would place intelligence more toward universal problem solver and an intuitive understanding of truth. If motivation, memory, and education in talents and abilities are equal then intelligence will rise to the top.

Surprised you missed Gf and Gc theory and also one of the most important reasons for understanding intelligence, or individual differences. So that those who excel can be educated in a way that maximises their potential, and those who need assistance in some areas can also receive support that will help them get the most out life. Most developed countries employ a form of meritocracy where individual differences tend to predict outcomes for people in adulthood. By understanding these differences in an objective way relatively early in life, people can be offered pathways that give them better opportunities for success than chance alone, particularly those who didn't get lucky in the lottery of genetics.

What is maximum intelligence? I would say that it’s the ability to understand any problem in all its detail instantly and to instantly provide a complete solution. But that’s just one facet of intelligence. This is a level of intelligence that would understand all of the Universe and how to manipulate it to the extent of anything that’s possible. However, a complete intelligence would also understand whether any manipulation of its environment should be be done at all. Where human intelligence really falls short is in the latter aspect. We manipulate our world without regard to the ultimate consequences of what we’re doing. We tend towards doing things that can be done because they can be done and without consideration of whether it should be done at all. We are in a sense blinded by our impulses. We manipulate and then deal with the consequences rather than understanding the consequences before doing that manipulation.

Genius is the specialism into a particular intelligence, and I believe genius is particularly exclusive, where it's practitioners are very weak in other specialisms. Commonly university students are very poor in specialisms outside of their own, with some exceptions. So extreme intelligence doesn't follow G, in the majority of cases. General intelligence, if strived for, would hinder genius in any specialism. The human brain doesn't seem to function in that way.

mark simpson i seem to have had a different experience...and this is in relation to science majors...it seems many people who are proficient in one area can have an intelligible conversation in many others...i agree there are "geniuses" out there...savants if you will...that are incredibly highly specialized mentally...but i think your "normal" really smart educated individual can have a broad range of knowledge

Toni Potamkin I think that's certainly what academics think of themselves. A famous speaker once related a story of his time as minister at an Oxford university. His friends were full of admiration saying that he must have the most challenging task dealing with such brilliant minds. His reply was, those minds deal with the narrowest specialisms. They are woefully inept at the most basic concepts that ordinary people manage daily.

I like to view intelligence as a behavioral pattern that can interpreted as ''smarts''. The interpretation depends on the eye of the beholder, aka culture. For example a certain culture could value quantitative ability more than verbal ability etc. Individuals interact with their environment differently, and some of them may be more or less likely than others to interact with their environment in such a way that makes them more ''intelligent'' as measured by IQ tests. I think that it's a developmental process and that it's affected by many genetic and environmental factors. But it seems to me that if you zoom out and focus on the big picture, intelligence might be defined as a behavioral trait, with individual differences being affected by certain genes interacting with ones environment. All of this was just me speculating.

id have to go with the general intelligence model, but the way we measure it is incomplete, i mean, id think, there is one over arching intelligence, made out of several different aspects that all add up to your general intelligence. and dividing these aspects is pointless, since they are all intertwined and rely on eachother... but fuck do i kno... im just a bored stoner.

I think that what is meant by the question is, "why should a capacity be called an intelligence?" Kind of like, we don't say a fast runner has "speed intelligence," we say that the runner can run fast. Not every ability has to be called an intelligence. Intelligence is a mental trait related to how well a person can solve problems; other traits are valid and useful without having to be called a type of intelligence.
