The use of the word “ecstasy” is very clever. The word is greek for “standing outside oneself” and it originated in Dionysus’s cults to describe the state of mind where you’ve done so many drugs you have an out of body experience (or at least you don’t feel like your body is yours). They believed that when that happened, Dionysus himself had taken your place in your body. So it was a good reference. That’s also where the word enthusiasm comes from. It means “possessed by a god”. Another reason why it’s a good word to use is because it’s also the name of a drug, albeit a modern one. This song feels like it could apply to any time period though so it’s fine. I wonder if the people who named that drug knew that the word had its roots in a drug cult.
