This song, to me, is about a man who's in love with a woman he believes is too good for him. He thinks he can't possibly be enough for her, despite her loving him too, so he ends up sabotaging himself. He leaves a relationship with the perfect woman because he doesn't think he deserves it. It's both beautiful and tragic.

That's a great take on it. My approach to it was that, he loved her and she was there for all the love but not returning it. So he felt like he wasn't enough meaning the "couldn't set you free" to be. So he left because he finally got to see it, but it was hurting him because he still loved her

Fun fact nobody cares about: I once used this song to write a character who's arc revolved around his concern that he was going crazy, and/or that he was too weak to live up to his father, and his ability to see spirits clouding his judgement. Thus, that particular line is rather powerful to me.
