When Mathematical Scientist meets Experimental Scientist
Sydney Chapman, mathematician and geophysicist, ridiculed the work of Kristian Birkeland and Hannes Alfven. The latter ultimately won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1970. The work of Hannes Alfven led to the development of the system of magnetohydrodynamics, a term first coined in 1942. The MHD theory of tornadoes has been published for decades, and the controversies involving the development and application of those theories is equally well documented. The decision to not award the field of meteorology the Nobel Prize is described.
