Macca takes the time to compare a long line of GW's Astartes and Guard tanks to the new Forge World super heavy in an attempt to figure out what many feel that the tank is 'off'.

To me the vehicle isn't really all that threatening, it's size is intimidating and it's hard to kill with those void shields but it's not really an overwhelming force like a Fellblade or Baneblade variant.

If anyone is wondering about the name of this mega grav-tank, this is the origin: in Greek mythology, Astraeus /əˈstriːəs/ was an astrological deity and the Titan-god of the dusk. Some also associate him with the winds, as he is the father of the four Anemoi/wind deities. Nice rundown on the past tank designs in 40k, it'd be really cool to see that underarm deodorant style grav-tank from 1st edition days as an Easter Egg in the next 40k video game, best used as a piece of derelict war junk in the background.

I like how you showed the progression of Imperial vehicles leading up to the Astraeus at the end.... my brain did have a sort of subconscious aesthetic lurch at that point, cleverly done. I do think the Custodian vehicles have a place in this story, especially the Coronus and it is those vehicles that are the real design origins for the grav-plates on both this and the Repulsor. There is something that is bugging me a bit now about the Astraeus, the fact that we haven't been given any photos of the rear of the vehicle. I have a small worry it could look like a Republic Class Star Destroyer from that angle which would not be cool in my book. Thanks for the cool video and can't wait for your new series on GW sex toys.
@TheOuterCircle
@TheOuterCircle 7 жыл бұрын
I think there's a logical progression. Every vehicle followed a set design pattern until we reached the Mastodon, which is an exception due to sheer size, but the Astraeus is bizarre as it looks to be about the size of a Fellblade, but it has some really divergent design principles. I think if it maintained just one or two of the older design styling's it probably would have worked far better for the average player.

Also, worth pointing out that Custodes vehicles have more in common with the Javelin speeder and the Rogue Trader era deodorant tank. They are quite sleek, with big engines and the grav elements are not so bug and gaudy.

The Outer Circle True, they took the grav-gear and made it really visually dominant. They wrote fluff to match, making the technology of the Repulsor sound inefficient and cumbersome compared to the much more sophisticated systems fitted to the land speeder and Custodian vehicles.

please allow me to take a nostalgia trip. btw, i started in eighth. at my local hobby store, i saw a few battles of warhammer 40k. not watching them intently, just mildly interested. the first game i saw was orks v tac marines. and it was beautiful. thats what i thought of 40k, little tiny blue guys vs little green aliens or red guys. but thats gone. its been replaced by giant insanely expensive heroes of the imperium vs bright green zombies. times are gone. the main thing i remember though, from the models that i saw, was a landspeeder, maybe the size of a computer mouse. and it was so great. simple, cheap, customizeable, very good overall. but with primaris, its gone. this must be weird coming from someone who started in eighth going on a nostalgia trip about what he never witnessed. sigh.

You say that these vehicles don't have an "Imperial Theme" but when you think about it the imperium doesn't design it's vehicles they are templates found in STC cores that they manufacture, the only exception to this being the primaris grav tank. Some vehicles have a very Aliens colonial theme and others are much more grim as they all come from different eras of mankind history which is what i find so fascinating about the imperium.

I really like it when GW/fw inject new designs instead of the endless iterations of the same hulls. What excites me so much as a heresy player is to get to play at a time of innovation in the lore. The inclusion of Cawl as a tool to inject evolution into imperial armies is much needed. Now that fw's release schedule for heresy has ground to a halt especially when it comes to exploring the tech that doesn't carry into 40k (volkite/grav/rad/etc ) i find myself envious of 40k marine players with all their new fancy tech and the possibility of invention rather than iteration.

The Astraeus would be a good Interex vehicle. Maybe something that represented the holding of STC imprints that the Imperium never found thanks to the way they dealt with those guys. When I first saw the Astraeus I hated it but I actually kinda like it now. However, I can't say the same for the full design of the Repulsor. But that can be easily solved by just removing that unnecessary "minigun turret or a turret". Either by putting it somewhere more reasonable or just not using it.

It vaguely reminds me of the Epic-scale Ordinatus Majoris models. I'd be more willing to accept this design if there were a more obvious justification for its length, like if it were a ground-based Thunderhawk sort of large transport. (Which reminds me, is the nose Stormraven-like?). I can't get past the strangeness of the shape if the point is simply to carry that turret around. And I still hate the idea of giving space marines - more advanced space marines! - stubbers.

Primaris tank. Those are not rockets around the turret, those are one-shot granadelaunchers. Used today in bulks on the armoured vehicles to disperse the fog, kill the laser and visual targeting and help evade enemy fire. Also possible to load AP granades into these probably. Differences between primaris vehicles and other imperial vehicles may be explained simply by its origin. Wich was quite aside (or paralel at least) imperial tech.

i would just like to say the point of a coax machinegun is not to range the main weapon on modern amour its to engage close-range infantry and soft targets like trucks or cars because of things like laser rangefinders the need for a ranging machine gun wasnt needed so the elevation of the coax is fine as it would only be shooting close targets
@TheOuterCircle
@TheOuterCircle 6 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for all armies, but I know our one still teaches people how to use the Coax to aim the weapon in if there is a fault with the rangefinders. Last resort? Sure, but as it's mounted directly to the main mounting it won't end well if it can't travel as far!

I'm sorry if this sounds rude but I'm not trying to be I am a tankie in the British army and it's not a taught method we have two lasers in case one breaks a Gunners and a Commanders and have an auxiliary sight in case main one brakes coax ranging method was gotten rid off with chieftain as it was no longer needed as the max range on a coax is no way close to the main armament as in 1.5k on coax compared to 3k for fin and 5k for hesh and smoke
@Gustav_Kuriga
@Gustav_Kuriga 6 жыл бұрын
+The Outer Circle I'm sorry, but you're talking so far out of your league it's hilarious. You may have had a case back when WWII and the Korean war were still happening, but modern cannons have a completely different firing arc than their coax, as has been said here the coax is mainly for engaging things you don't want to waste main cannon ammo on, like unarmored trucks and infantry. Furthermore, if your coax is fixed at the same level as the gun as is the case with most modern tanks simply for ease of production and less complexity, in order to range with the coax you'd have to first range with the coax, then adjust the gun and fire with the main gun. Why do that when you have a laser sight or gunner sight that doesn't need the coax?

I admit it does look more futuristc but considering that much technology was lost through the Millennia including a lot of it from the Dark Age of Technology it would only make sense that they would eventually find something that looks futuristic but may still be within their ability to replicate if you ask me the design looks more feasible then the actual Repulsor tank because with the ra pulsar the center of balance is directly on top but with the super heavy tank it's in the middle with the ballasts on the sides or pontoons for stabilization of a hovering craft making it harder to turn over and how do they steer the tank if it is hovering I mean it has thrusters on the back but then how do they stop it? Or turn it quickly?

This tank is now almost $400 in the US, which as of this comment is just under 320 Pounds. I could have considered (If barely) it when it was around $250 but now it's so obscenely expensive I would just buy a 3d printer and print it along with a mastodon and a gunship. Jfc it's so much money... I've always understood the arguments against the design of the Astraeus even if I didn't agree with them, it might not feel like a classic 40k tank but it does feel very primaris to me. I do actually like the look and while I'd absolutely rather have a blade/sword variant for a 30k army or first-born army, I don't think the Astraeus is that bad looking. Literally my only gripe with the Astraeus is a gripe I have with most 40k tanks, which is the multiple cannons does not make sense from a logistics or firepower standpoint. But if we were applying that logic to 40k, none of us would be having very much fun would we? That all being said, while I've been into the lore for a long time I only got into the game at the end of 8th/start of 9th edition and I bought the Indomitus box as my first dive into the game so Primaris was my first exposure to the game itself. Edit: Price correction because I was using the wrong currency, but the point still stands

Yeah the T28 and T35 were multi-turreted but to address the lineage you have to look at what the Russians licensed the design from, the Vickers A1E1. If you have a twin sponson Baneblade having 4 lascannon turrtets should look really familiar though the lascannon turrets do copy the ones from the T28 except move the access hatch from the top to the rear.

Really closer to the FV432 rather than the M113. The current Predator Destructor essentially IS a model of the old FV432 Rarden variant (with added sponsons if that tickles your fancy) and after all the "real" rhino is an FV432 wearing a dress. Also the Hydra (and this, it seems) takes its design cues rather more from the cold war era Gepard AAA system (or its cousins from the far east like the Japanese Guntank) rather than world war II ear flak platforms. And Co-Axial guns are used for ranging (though that is by no means common.) Pintle guns are usually intended for short range air defence and fending off enterprising infantry. Though the fixed one in the bow of the turret of this one isn't much use for anything as you rightly point out. "makes no sense from a design point" - well you could say that about just about any 40K tank Finally, isn't the whole point of the recent changes that the Imperium is moving, changing, evolving? Would that not suggest that design philosophies are changing along with it?

It is a shame the lore of 40k has always said that when fallen in battle fighting vehicles and even personal armour are fought over, recovered and lovingly restored by the tech marines of the chapter. Some of the war machines have been fighting since the great crusade. And GW seems to want to eradicate the lore. I still have a fleet of Mk1/Rogue trader Rhino chassis, whirlwinds, Predator annihilators, even the original las/plas razorbacks. Beautiful models from nearly 30 years ago that I still use today. I do have some Primaris models, but I use them as more of a bolster than a replacement. I have an impulsor I like it don't get me wrong its heavily armoured for a Razorback style troop carrier and the shield is nice. The repulsor however I'm not a fan. It feels like they just wanted to replace the land raider and the only way they could get people to sniff at it was to add more dakka and in an ork way. As for the Astraeus I like it but it doesn't have the big guns a super heavy should have, like a cannon the size of a land raider that shoots rhinos. its just a bullet sponge to take the pressure off the rest of the army

The question about that miniature holder is really, why would i spend cash on it (apparently it will cost around 5£ or something like that), when i with even half that amount, can use and old pill bottle, a block of wood or some of citadels old paints with flad lids and some blue tack can get the exact same result? It keeps your hands off the miniature, it allow you to rotate it to get to those hard to reach spots etc etc etc. All for the easy price of what 2 maybe 3£ at best. Also if the top or some other part of this device breaks, do i need to spend another 5£ plus shipment for a new one or can the individual pieces be bought separately?. Something tells me it can´t. Sure some times the blue tack can stick to the miniature, but if you change the blue tack with regular intervals that´s not much of a problem. So no i just can´t see the point of it, not when the alternative is just as effective and much much cheaper.

Well thing is there are ALOT of other similar products out there for GW to compete with. So the question really is how does this one stack up against the other miniature holders out there?

I would actually say there are 0 tanks in the 40k universe based off the M113. Those are APCs or IFVs, not tanks. Furthermore, of course it doesn't look like any of the tracked vehicles, it's a fucking anti-grav vehicle. You should be thinking more along the lines of the Space Marine speeders for comparisons.

Think of the M113 with the turret and short 75mm they made. As for the grav tank, it doesn't look like the speeders or any of the fliers either.

It isn't just an enlarged speeder the way the Tau battlesuits are just larger versions of each other, but the design elements are there. Angled front, grav units on the side. Bolter on the front and any heavy weaponry in the back.

So basically no innovation, never innovate. Every tank should look the same to start... Fucking boring man. Innovation is important

If it's antithetical to the entire universe it's in, it's a bit dumb. But that's not the point, it's that there's a common design ethos and factions need internal consistency. It's a bigger problem than just 'new unit' which isn't a complaint.

Another day, another marine tank churns out. This one flys so negates the unique edge the Eldar had over Marine tech. If I were Eldar I would not be happy with that. I have a 30k marine on a speeder bike so I know this tech is not new to marines. But let's talk reality for a minute. When jet planes came out. Propeller air craft were obsolete. If marines have this tech they would stop making tracks. They would be obsolete. As much as I like the model. It's pretty cool. Does it not reigate the Thunderhawk and even landspeeders. You can now play marines the same as Eldar Guardians. Another reason to pick marines over Eldar. Need to stop churning out tank kits. It's getting old.

This "Tank" is an unsightly, ungainly, overwrought monstrosity.......and it has no place in the 30K ~or~ 40K setting....... _Period._

Macca, why do you need to put people down when they don't agree with you ? Are you able to actually see the future of warfare in M31 - M40 and trying to apply 20 - 21 century TTTP to a make believe future ?. Although you have been an armourer this does not make you an expert on the use of the weapons which you serviced. That is, when was the last time a co-ax wpn was used for ranging on a MBT ? I bet it was before the Gulf War (the real one in 1991). That would give away the MBT's position would it not ? The co-ax is for close defence for when the MBT is being attacked by infantry. And before you start "shit cunting" me, I did serve and wore the coloured beret as you did. So please stop trying to be superior to those who have no military background and are just trying to put their point across. I am looking forward to tomorrows podcast.
