Thanks for posting, no replacing the ball bearing then, have to buy an entire hub

To me, "scams" and humanity's lack of capacity to stop and prevent them are more proof how humanity continues to abuse, corrupt, and damage innocent and helpless children who are forced manipulated into participating in, perpetuating, and profiting off of harm instead of doing increasingly less harm like everyone actually needs.

Outstanding vehicle Bravo I have that same truck I always wanted to know what it look like inside there they go out if you hit a big pothole

Back in the day, wheel bearing were long and tapered. Rarely saw a failure. If they got noisy, just had to grease them and go. Now they are made to fail for profit.

Parts are made into certain integrated bigger parts now so that the average mechanics can simply hook up the vehicle computers and rely on the codes to tell them what to replace instead really servicing the components or repairing the cars in the traditional sense.

great explanation,thank you very much.I have one question.Is it the clearance fit between the ball bearing and the ball bearing cage?
@theoverengineer
@theoverengineer 3 жыл бұрын
There is a generous clearance there, but more importantly, there is a clearance between raceway and balls. However unlikely, there is one.

If a dinner fork can take it apart, what is holding the ball bearings to the hub and preventing it from popping out when installed on the car?

They could put a zerk hole for grease but that would kill there huge profit.

Thanks for the vid. I realize that you say that these are not serviceable but I'm wondering if this notion could be challenged if not to save money to challenge the capitalist design of modern wheel hub assemblies. Let's say that someone wants to hack a wheel hub bearing like the one you showed in your video by drilling a small hole and perhaps adding a zerk fitting or simply sealing it back up with a metal hardener compound after re-greasing inside the hub in order to prolong the life of said wheel hub assemblies would this be possible? If so, how would one attempt this? Some people have added grease through the abs sensor with some degree of success but this only seems to be possible on certain types of wheel hub assembly designs perhaps,...

How could angle ball bearing wear more in radial play than axial bearing! How to avoid that as OEM parts usually better than new aftermarket parts!

Nothing expensive in it. You buy them for $40-50 if you buy a cheap one. You just bought the wrong one. Price depends on quality though. also for the plain bearing.

There's nothing surprising here. This reduces the initial cost to the manufacturer, at greater expense "down the road". This is in the name of competition. When you consider shop time is often $100/h, pressing new bearings into a traditional hub must be considered. I would be surprised if the average car owner is affected by this so-called scam. How long do these all-in-one hubs last compared to the old self contained bearings?
@theoverengineer
@theoverengineer 9 жыл бұрын
***** Hub lasted 160,000km (100,00mi). It is reasonable. Say 1/2hr for wheel removal, hub replacement, wheel mounting costs exactly as much as 1/2 hr for wheel removal, bearing replacement, wheel mounting. Difference is cost in parts. The scam relates to manufacturing products cheaply at a greater expense down the road, because up-front costs are always explicit, ownership costs are always unadvertised.

***** Self-contained bearings last the same time.

Ball bearings. No wonder these fail all the time. A long time ago, the manufacturers got away from ball bearings in autos because of the increased load and speed placed upon them. They then went to roller bearings to be able to achieve reliability. Now, it is a system to have us replace these regularly if we want to continue to use our cars. What a rip-off.

its done this way because of safety...
@theoverengineer
@theoverengineer 9 жыл бұрын
***** Machined-in races are not inherently safer, stronger or longer-lasting than hollow hub + bearing construction. In fact, better surface finish, more consistent depth-of-hardness and tighter tolerances are achievable when the full bearing is made separately. Hence my last word describing automakers` practices: scam. In racing and high-end applications, plus all motorcycle wheels (aluminum or magnesium) come with separate bearings (steel).
