It’s because the action of having ur hands on your knees is a tell tale sign that your tired and wouldn’t want your opponent to know that so it’s a habit he trying to break when it’s told to players

I know this is an old comment, but you're totally right. Our bodies know best. Tripod positioning allows more air into the lungs than the classic "hands behind your head". This is such a pet peeve of mine when coaching. I understand not wanting the other team to see you're fatigued, but for the sake of practice and conditioning, it's the best way to catch your breath.
