Spike Wilner, owner of Smalls Jazz Club and Mezzrow, was asked by Artistic Director, Bryan Beninghove of Riverview Jazz the host of the Jersey City Jazz Festival, curate and produce one the three stages. Fords Gin Row was one of this year's sponsors of the stages curated by Small Live.
Pianist Miki Yamanaka was one of the headlining acts of this year's festival. She and her trio opened up the festival with music from all over the jazz spectrum paying homage to jazz elders ranging from Dr. Barry Harris to Horace Silver,
This September, Miki's new album "Shades of Rainbow"(Cellar Music) will be released and features Mark Turner on tenor sax, Tyrone Allen on bass, and Jimmy MacBride on drums. Last week she released the first single from the album now available to stream on Spotify and Amazon Music.
Miki hails from Kobe, Japan and moved to New York City in 2012 to pursue her passion, music. Upon moving here, she ditched her science degree and studied with the likes of Fred Hersch, Jeb Patton, and Jason Linder. She was one of three pianists selected to participate in Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead Program. While earning her masters degree in Music at Queens College, Miki was on the frontlines playing with Antonio Hart and Philip Harper.
Tonight on ‪@ThePaceReport‬ I had a chance to sit down with Miki to discuss her upcoming new album, reflect on some of her musical heroes, and talk about her residencies she hosts at the famed Smalls Jazz Club and Mezzrow in New York City.
