TPE is bringing solid content, discussing what really matters. The lack of views & subscribers only goes to prove what all quality content makers have been saying all along, our awaam is not interested in knowing the issues, let alone solving those. They are only here for the good time, the masala. When those are your priorities no wonder you have a totally screwed system, not only economy. Brain drain is rampant because those with the brains and resources have seen where this trajectory will lead and are taking appropriate measures. I was looking at a video of Ganji Swag and he too was bashing his head against a wall at this attitude of the public. In the nutshell, you do your part, its all such efforts which may gather a critical mass for change. Kaiser Bengali spent his entire life seeing only deterioration, it would be sad if TPE's generation also sees the same.

As always, one on the finest discussion with with you r guest. As student of political economics, we always learn something new from people like Dr. Sahib. He carries in depth knowledge of Pakistan Economics, but on some issue I, as a student of Economics for last 35 years, have different opinion from Dr. Sahib. Such as the three devastating steps that ruined the Pakistani economy were: 1- Nationalization 2-Afghan War 3- Freezing US currency Accounts Nationalization by Bhutto shacked the confident of the investor that still has impact on Pakistan economy. Foreign & local investors think hundred times before investing in Pakistan and try to keep their liquid assets out side of the country because they are skeptical that their quick assets may be frozen if not nationalized. Further, when Bhutto did nationalization, these state owned units were being managed by Urdu & Punjabi speaking bureaucrats. Urdu speaking bureaucrats were forced fully retired and remaining got natural retirement in next 5-7 years. In the private sector, competitiveness was the key and was predominantly occupied by Urdu speaker who were subsequently kicked out by Bhutto. These people were replaced with Sindhi speaking people for PPP's political advantage. As long as old people were there, these units showed excellent performance but in late 1970s results started showing. Nationalization was an structural adjustment in Pakistani economy that caused effect after 5-7 years. As Pervaiz musharaf's policy of installing CNG stations showed its effect after 10 years. In his era every body was praising him for his wisdom of using natural gas as substitute of imported energy source. I met with Secretary Petroleum in Islamabad at that time. During the discussion he got upset when I asked him Sir, why are you burning national resources in these vehicle? Then he told me bounties of such as a great decision. Another big mistake that Bhutto did and PPP government has been doing which I think is an injustice with Sindhis is that they did not build quality educational and vocational institutes in rural Sindh. I was shocked when I saw a video clip that the students of IBA Sukker were not able to tell what IBA stands for. PPP is still not trying to enhance educational and technical capacity of Sindhis and they rather place them in Government positions.

Not a fan of a nationalized economy. It may have made sense back then due to Pakistan's situation post-1971, but I hope implication wasn't to justify its reintroduction for the current economic climate. True, massive corruption within the "idaras" is the root cause of this and many of Pakistan's problems. However, this issue has been quite well known - talked about openly and behind closed doors - yet there's been no movement forward to pull the reins off of the elite and handed over to the people. Without a real democracy, a real system of justice, real educational system, a fairer distribution of government resources that favors the people over defense and a policy to encourage innovation (and by extension promoting a favorable import/export differential), I sadly don't see any improvement for the everyday Pakistani in the foreseeable future.

@Mo'mina Makin show me where nationalization has worked. Venezuela is a great example of what happens when you nationalize an economy. Pakistan is the next best example of what happened as a result of nationalization of the economy. It may have worked for the short-term, but it killed innovation and market efficiencies, for which Pakistan is suffering to this day. The private sector of Pakistan is a joke in comparison to the private sectors of its developing nation contemporaries. And when I was talking about fair distribution, I was not talking about fair distribution of wealth that a lot of left-leaning people push for. I was talking about fair distribution of the budgetary resources that every government has. That my friend is controlled by those in real power. And as you may be aware, the lion's share of the budget goes towards the military instead of the people. Until the country invests in its people the way many other progressing nations have, there is no way out for Pakistan from its debt-laden hole.

I am an economist snd listen to Bengali when I get a chance. His economic policy proposals sound sensible but are simplistic. No time for populism we have to bite the bullet. Some exp reduction, but need to double our tax to GDP ratio from 8 to 16 pc. KP is a big tax evader, fbr should get after the khans Speed up privatization of loss making state entities like pia and steel mill we can't keep them in govt sector. Very high opportunity cost. Devaluation. It's effect on inflation would be less than what Bengali thinks. Why. Because the practice in economics is to combine exp switching (devaluation) with exp reducing policies. You can work out the maths. Finally, get rid of all non target subsidies and ensure that changes in international prices of oil and gas are passed on to consumers. Good economic policies need to go hand in hand with devolution at local level. This could be a start.

Sir with all due respect I disagree with you over the nationalization issue. Bhutto broke the backbone of Pakistani’s economy with this policy of his and we are still suffering from those consequences. In every part of the world you have Jhonson and Jhonson or Tata and they may not go by the book but the number of jobs they create, the amount of revenue they bring into the country actually strengthens the economy. It’s very easy to criticize an industrialist sitting in a fancy car but if he is paying his taxes and taking care of his employees that man has earned a comfortable life, show him some respect. Because of those 20 so families there were millions getting salaries and running their kitchens. What did we achieve with nationalization? Were those employees able to run those factories? It was a bleak time in the history of our country and since then we are doomed.
