Atif Rehman Mian is a Pakistani-American economist who serves as the John H. Laporte Jr. Class of 1967 Professor of Economics, Public Policy, and Finance at Princeton University, and as the Director of the Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy and Finance at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2021, and was elected Fellow of the Econometric Society in 2021.
His work focuses on the connections between finance and the macro economy. He is the first person of Pakistani origin to rank among the top 25 young economists of the world. In 2014, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) identified Atif as one of twenty-five young economists who it expects will shape the world's thinking about the global economy in the future.

Mian Atif: He was chosen by Imran Khan for the Economic Advisory Council in July 2018 but was gone by the end of August 2018 because all parties and people of Pakistan rejected him because he is an Ahmedi (declared NOn-Muslims in 1973 Constitution)

What a superb discussion. Atif Mian is a financial wizard and I will strongly recommend him to be an executive adviser to the prime minister of Pakistan and finally promoted as a full fledged minister with full powers. Atif Sahib gave an amazing example of the India and pakistan on the libralization of the IT, when I ran the outsourcing for Nortel and EMC on the development front, I eneded up taking the 2500+ jobs to India and expended into China, mexico and Russia. While being a Pakistani I favored Pakistan, yet during my assesment of Pakistan against what other countries (mentioned earlier ) Pakistan just could not compete. Infrastructure, corruption, work ethics, safty, language, too much mullahisam, ease of travel, legal barriers on creating a IT zoned areas, equipment taxes etc etc. Pakistan has too many issues. if you listen to Atif Sahib carefully , one can easily come to what needs to be done to fix this country, but I doubt we have the required leadership with the vision.

Former Congress finannce minister Chidambaram said, "There are no smartphone electricity or wifi in villages how will people use them. Many people don't have bank account. Small shopkeepers don't have internet how do you think they will use UPI and try to become part of your Digital India." Chidambaram was not mocking the government he was telling the reality. Today everyone uses UPI from small shopkeepers to big brands. Also it should be known that India has the fastest growing e commerece market. 80% of the transactions are made using UPI. In few years UPI will cross one billion transactions. It is revolution and the government is improving it to provide service through digital payments. UPI is also used in Nepal,Bangladesh and is going to launch in more countries. PM Modi proved former finance minister Chidambaram wrong within few years.

I've learnt so much as I listened to Atif Mian. Just a thought; if experts of such amazing caliber could simplify economics for a layperson, all the terms, all that needs to be done by a common Pakistani who has basic literacy, is working, saving, striving to make ends meet, yet life just gets harder for him/her. I'm sure if awareness and some simplified information that makes sense (and all that Atif Muan says, makes sense), when this information reaches to the middle/lower middle whatever class that struggles , there's hope that they will exercise some better decisions.

His love his heart his passion to make a difference in Pakistan is amazing....inspite of being an Ahmadi and hence displaced by PTI government from his Economic Advisor position.....A true gem ....A real diamond or Koh-i-Noor produced in Pakistan !

The elephant in the room is the rate of population growth in Pakistan. No amount of tinkering with the economy can avert impending disaster if it keeps growing at this rate. In 1947 this part of Pakistan had 35 million people, today there are 235 million while the land and water resources have remained more or less the same and we are adding 7 million to this every year! No economy in the world can sustain and survive at this rate. Without resorting to drastic action to limit growth, the future looks very bleak.

U have got it totally backwards. When a country develops i.e. woman get basic education, better access to healthcare especially lowering of child mortality rates, Urbanization etc, Then the population growth rate reduces. Look at every developing or developed country. Without doing the above no amount of coercive action can work.

i think populaton in not problem. Generating resources is the problem. China introduce one policy & now their population is aging & young ones who can work are not enough. Human recources are always key .

Atif Mian is an incredible talent that PK must use. It is very unfortunate that right wing fundamentalists who oppose involving Mr. Mian are very narrow minded. Sir Zafarullah Khan was the first and best FM of Pakistan. Ardshir Cowasjee, Rana Bhagwan Das, Dr Abdus Salam and many more are/were as much a Pakistani as any of the molvis.

I came here by accident. Thoroughly enjoyed and the interesting thing is that I have been looking at the root causes of Pakistan which are retrogressing instead of progressing. Atif, one of the leading economists has given me another lens through which one can try to understand the economic challenges. I like the concept of elite productivity and unproductive. I will suggest the moderator not interrupt the speaker, especially the one who has full authority on his subject. But thanks for this detailed explanation of the challenges of Pakistan. Hello Shehzad, thanks for organizing this program and for bringing esteemed Atif Mian to your show. It was a pleasure to listen to him and his suggestions. I have a huge fan of Atif Mian and have a great deal of respect for him. I am glad Atif Mian brushed aside the comments and notions favoring one party policies over others and commented that all finance ministers and political parties have done silly things in the past not just from one political party which I thought became the underlying theme of your line of questioning. Also in my opinion the role of the establishment to ruin the economy and the power they posses over the civilian governments and political parties is undeniable. Extremism is prevalent and there is no denying they have a significant role in it. So how can Pakistan achieve economic stability under such prevailing conditions?

Thanks man as Indian I can see these problems in my country as well like politicians in real estate, sugarcane(Maharastra), privates engineering and medical colleges which are very low productive and pay few taxes.
