Wood Turning A Special Piece Of Oak

Oak is a lovely wood to work with. I love the smell of it while I m turning. I really like making memory bowls. We had a tornado blow through here in May of 2024. I helped out my neighbourhood by cutting and clearing trees off of roofs, cars, and front lawns. I took a piece of wood from each place and told them I would turn a memory bowl for them. I have 4 left to make from the 20 or so I started with.

It is nice to keep in mind where we got our pieces from. I date my rough turned pieces and add a quick note where they came from. I recently returned a piece of black walnut that I went for on a snowy Sunday afternoon in January 2009 to a good friends house. Nice to pass on when giving my work away. Nicely finished bowl that will be enjoyed by someone. You should try making a few trinket boxes, they are easy to do and give a lot of pleasure to recipient's.

Thank you Jim. I like both a recess and a tenon depending on the piece of wood. If it is from a half log then you will have stock there for making the tenon and if it is a larger piece I like the tenon. Thinner a recess saves height or hot gluing a premade tenon on is a good way to do it. So many choices LOL Thanks for watching, Gary

Still have the round Oak pedestal table and the Oak roll top desk I made close to 50 years ago. Swapped out the Oak bathroom cabinets I made years ago as well. Did not replace with Walnut though LOL. Talk about timing, (and I swear this is true!) Just yesterday, I decided to try a shallow oak bowl from the end of an 8' x 10 1/2" x 2" plank I've had stashed for years in the wood pile, just begging to be made into something. So I cut off a square piece & began turning last night. This was a first (for me) from oak & your video was most helpful in choosing a sequence & technique. Lots of useful hints & tips here. Thank you very much. There was a lot more to the story but I did not want to drag it out. He mentioned some other wood he had in a shed in back. I looked but it was in bad shape. He had a 16 inch bandsaw and along bed 6 inch jointer in that shed as well. I asked him if he wanted to sell them but he said they were broken but I could take them for free if I wanted. He said the people coming in to clean up would have just took them for scrap metal. I had brought my trailer to get the table saw so I loaded them up. Bandsaw needed a switch but the jointer had part of the table slides broken. I took it apart and put on my Bridgeport mill and pinned and bolted it back together. Works fine now. The bandsaw would only cut 6 inch's thick so I traded up to a different one.

Glad to see you back at it. Very nice bowl. I tend to turn several of these types of bowls. BTW, I recently upgraded my dust collection system to 4” schedule 20 PVC pipe and removed all the flex pipe except at the machines and the blast gates and other fittings connected right up. Boy, what a difference! I run a 650 cfm Jet collector wired for 220VAC. It pulls like an 800 cfm unit.

Beautiful bowl. I find oak a bit hard to turn, however, I usually turn any oak from the tree after it's been cut from the tree and as a bowl blank. I haven't turned any oak that has been properly dried and ready to work.

Thank you Harry. Well you are right it turns much easier when it has been cut from a tree and not kiln dried. I do have one big chunk from and Oak tree I have been putting off for about 8 years. Maybe I better get to it before the worms do LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Rick. It is not my favorite any more. Although a number of years ago I built everything out of Oak. Still have the Roll Top desk and the round Oak table I made with a pedestal turning and carved Oak feet. But that was close to 50 years ago. We both got our fill of Oak but I just needed to do this one. Take care, Gary

I wonder what an end grain vase would look like made from four pieces of this nice and thick beautiful oak. Just a thought. This is a sweet and simple bowl, a great way to get some time on the lathe. This is Gil Grace, YT changed my user name again. :-(

Hi Gary, glad you are back in your shop and turning and feeling better. I know you have a video somewhere on negative brake scrapers. However, it appears that your scraper might be an inch and a half wide and then ground to your specifications. Could you please send me the angles on both sides of your scraper. I have one that I want to make similar to yours. Thanks and so glad you’re back at it.!

You will see in the video I sent I have a number of them which I made from chisels. Also have a 1 inch wide one that I bought as a standard scraper and made it negative rake. Both that one and the 1.5 inch scraper I bought at www.pennstateind.com/

What a nice rich looking bowl! It’s also a very elegant shape. I like it very much. I have a couple of chunky pieces of Oak that a cabinet maker once gave me. Once again you’ve given me an idea 👌. Do you ever need to sharpen the recess tool? If so how do you do it? Cheers, Rick

Thank you Rick. I have not had this one long enough to need to sharpen it but I believe you would put top side down on a diamond stone and hone it. Kind of like people do with the carbide inserts. Thanks for watching, Gary

I know that the sealers just add shine but if you eant the grain to pop and stand out so we will get surprised you should add some stain that would make the grainexplode and we would see finished product better

That is an option but I do not care for staining wood. I could have used a dark grain filler and that will make it show as well. Thanks for all your tips I will think about them.

Thank you Lee. For sure as the bowl gets thinner it is harder to clean up. By leaving some stock in the middle it really helps. That is a Robert Sorby Dovetail Chisel You can do the same with a skew but this tool is ground to fit the Nova jaws and can flatten it at the same time.

You should have glued a sacrificial piece on the bottom so you could have made better use of the good wood

That was a thought but the recess did not effect the height of the bowl so I think it ended up the same. A tenon would have wasted a lot of it.
