My dear husband has a giant toolbox in our garage. One drawer is full of metal files in different shapes and degrees of coarseness. I borrowed one and used it on a plastic ruler I found at the thrift store. I was able to make a great tearing ruler. It worked so well I made another, slightly different one when I found another inexpensive ruler. Since I work mostly in "inches," I use the file on the "centimeters" side to make my tearing rulers.
