Hi all!
This video's topic is on conure biting! The video explores the most common reasons for conure biting and offers some solutions to the problem!
I've tried to cover as many reasons as possible, along with a few solutions. However there are so many techniques you can use and it'd make the video too long to cover them all!

Sorry I know this is very late, not even sure if anyone will see this, but wanted to ask. My conure is 6 months old, and super loving to us. Always wants to sit on us, flys to our shoulder if it looks like we're about to leave the room, loves scritches- with me especially, he'll burrow under my hands so he's snuggled under them- but then he just wants to basically eat my hands! Like, frantically biting really hard, non stop! It's so unexpected, but he's doing it all the time now- I genuinely don't understand whats gotten into him. He's not showing any other signs of hormonal behaviour, getting plenty of undisturbed sleep, and has a good balanced diet consisting of chop in the morning, and small portions of harrisons pellets and the parrot food he was eating from the pet shop (which we're weaning him off gradually) in the afternoon and evening. Does anyone think the soft targeting training might help with this problem, or am i missing something glaring? He's our first conure and only had him for about 6 weeks, so we're still learning. Any help would be super appreciated! :)

Hey there, Conures, especially males can be quite nippy it’s a bit of a species trait! The first thing I’d suggest is not letting him under your hand, it’s not uncommon for them to bite lots in that position as the hand over their body almost simulates mating! (It’d be worth watching my videos on how to pet and cuddle your bird and conure behaviours if you get a moment!) He’s also young so may be testing to see what’s acceptable or not. I’d definitely suggest soft targeting and trying to keep any cuddling to the side and around the head and neck only!

Very helpful video. I have a parrotlet, not a conure, but he seems to bite for a lot of the same reasons. Crinkly bags make him especially upset. He’s getting better though! I only get bit every few days now instead of several times a day 😀 Can you do a video on stress bars on feathers if you know anything about that? Thank you so much! I've got a 5 month old Conure and she bites and nibbles on everything. Until 2 months ago, she loved being held and scratched... now if you do it, she gives a small screech and then bites painfully.

Thanks for the video, appreciate the advice. My conure Leeloo just turned 8 months old and had been getting a bit nippy. It’s not aggressive, or attacking but mainly it’s fingers she goes after. I have been a bit worried because she's gotten my mom a couple of times and my mom has thin skin because she is a senior.

Hopefully it came in handy! They do tend to get nippy, and fingers are often a prime target. I'd highly recommend the soft targeting approach as well as redirection. Both of those worked best with our own rescues!

@@TheParrotTeacher Thanks I will definitely try that. When you mentioned the sugar I also realized that she acted up more on days I let her have a sugary treat like a nutriberry or fruit so I am going to cut down on that and give it in a smaller portion.

@@Ash43509 Hey Ash, For conures especially, sugar and processed food can be a major trigger for naughty behaviour. It's better to give them natural fruit if you want to give them a treat and just make it a small piece!

I have 2 sun conures on of them has a dislocated shoulder and it bites hard . I Don’t know how to stop it from biting my hands, however it doesnt do anything to my face . It likes to sit on my shoulders and eat from my plate. Any advise what i can do ?

When I come home from work, my pineapple wants out of the cage and to be held. This leads to over excitement and biting. When I let him out of the cage but don't try to pick him up immediately but do talk to him, change his water etc. giving him time to calm down, he is less likely to bite. He also bites when he doesn't get his way. If it were up to him, he would be held 24 hrs a day. When I have time and he is calm, I let him fall asleep in my cupped hands.

I’m just feeling super heartbroken today. Been starting target training with Sunny (yes, it’s me again) and while the mental stimulation has been helping with the screaming and giving her better sleep, the last two days, Sunny has gone out of her way to fly up the stairs just to harass/bite my younger brother. Twice on the neck and today on his cheek. 😭 He’s never done anything to Sunny and yet she seems hell bent on just that younger brother. (He looks like the brother Sunny loves/snuggles) I’m just really worried my family is going to issue an eviction notice for Sunny. 😢 It makes no sense. When we first got her a year ago, everyone could handle her, she would sit and snuggle on both my parents and enjoy watching TV with me. No biting. Since late winter through to now, she has become a velociraptor in parrot drag. Yes I still need a glove to handle her (and from watching a channel called “parrot tricks” that’s not ideal as the bird should WANT to do what you ask, not have no choice in stepping up” 😭 I just don’t want anyone else or me getting hurt and it’s cruel to lock Sunny in her cage all day. (Everyone else is of the mindset that “it’s my house, I’m not modifying my behaviour for some bird.) We all just super miss our cockatiel. She was a sweet, loving and gentle cockatiel. The method I used to teach Sparky the cockatiel to not bite does NOT work with Sunny the Conure.

Hey there, It's possible she has entered her "teen years" If she is between 1 1/2 years - 3 years old then it's what's commonly known as her "terrible 2's!" (even though the name doesn't always match the years) For some big birds it can last a decade! During this hormones are worse, behaviour tends to be a bit more erratic and we as parrot owners need to do more to control it. it's also possible there's something in the environment that's causing the trouble or something that's changed. Sadly with conures they can be difficult birds to deal with and do require lots of patience and work. I understand how you feel as it can be tough.

@@TheParrotTeacher she’s 7 this year. We adopted her when she was 6. The family we got her from, a relative of their family was Sunny’s breeder. (She has an ID ring on her leg. I’d love to know how to use that info to track down her original home if possible) I think it’s the summer moult as I looked at her closely today and sure enough, dozens of pins around her head. Also, would it be a good idea to have the person she bit, present rare treats to her as part of training? Are things like peanuts 🥜 okay as treats? (Roasted but unsalted) Her staples are whole in shell roasted Hemp seeds (good proteins and fats) she was on corn based pellets when we got her and WOAH NELLY! Was she territorial of her cage. Her feathers were supper tatty looking on her back and wings. A year on hemp, cashews and home grown Vegetables, her feathers now glow with health. 💕 if you think broadening her diet would be good, feel free to recommend. Also sunflower seeds and nutriberry seed balls for training.

@@diaryofagoat-lass1023 There's two ways you can go about it. Have them protect themselves and just be still around her. Or have them actively try to treat her. I'd cut the peanuts entirely, they just aren't good or safe. You could look at diet in general/record training sessions too. I think I mentioned this before, but keep trying and be patient. Also to look at this properly it would honestly require a consult as there's so much to unpick.

And believe me, I would love a consultation... but converting from GBP to CND dollars is... 😬 And believe me, I have looked up numerous diet lists for conures. That’s how we knew to get rid of her pellets which were mostly corn and making her miserable and miserable to be around. At least we had a nice moment today with her target training as she was actually excited and watching for me to get her stick. To an extent yes, if you just got them I’d work on the target training a little more and also stepping on and off! Otherwise give it time and work on bonding!

When your conure bites, how do you get him to let go? Mine will bite me through work gloves and just hangs on. He can draw blood right through the leather of the glove.

Hey Heather, Luckily this hasn’t been an issue for us for a while! BUT when we first got Scampi and Olive (2 of our rescue conures) they would bite and sometimes hang on! They have such sharp beaks and can do lots of damage. The techniques we used before we could really get stuck in to training were: 1. Most obvious, trying to work on training that didn’t put our hands at risk. This meant using a perch if a sleeved hand wasn’t enough. 2. Target training is also very helpful as it can encourage softer bites but also redirect biting behaviour once they know they will get a reward! 3. Using a treat to get them to let go. 4. We don’t really recommend it often as it falls under reacting but you can also use a sharp sound to discourage them initially. 5. It’s also worth looking at the reasons for biting and trying to observe any body language that may lead to it! Sadly forcibly removing them should be a last resort for example shaking, pinching beaks etc as it just makes hands seem bad and makes them react by biting more.

Hey Amra, Changes in environment can cause problems. I'd go back to basics with him. Work on bonding, through the bars if you need to. Work on target training and soft targeting with him so you can redirect the behaviour and teach him to soften his bite force. Also make sure you know exactly what the reason behind the biting is. Is it for attention? Is it because he feels scared? Is he hormonal? Is he getting less fun/interaction?

Hey there, Biting could have a few reasons behind it! It’s unlikely to be hormones due to her age, but it could be lots of things. Is diet good? Does she get enough sleep? Has there been a break of trust between you both (such as you having to grab her for example?) is she getting used to the new cage and needs to adapt etc !

@@TheParrotTeacher Diet is good I believe. A mixture of veggies, fruit, seeds and nuts... I have never grabbed to scare I usually wait for Zazu to come to me or up up. She seems to like her cage as she has more room and like to explore and play with her toys. I believe we have a great bond. If I leave a room she flies and comes to me no matter where I am. Zazu loves cuddles and scratches but has recently started nipping when I try but does occasionally now lay in my hand for a little scratch and nap. I don't know what I have done wrong but I don't want her to be unhappy. Iv been told to try many things by many different kinds of conure owners but if she bites and I put her down and walk away she follows right behind me.

I have a 4 yr old pineapple cheek conjure. She has been re-homed 4 times. She is a biter very much so with me. She will step up for my husband and not bite him as hard. She will only come to me when he is not around. She likes to be out of her cage and will like to sit on top our sun conures cage. I would really use some advice with our Little Skye. There’s lots to be unpicked here! So there would be some good times to work with her while your husband isn’t about through training positive reinforcement! Also closely observing her and maybe even recording sessions could help! Sadly there’s lots to unpick and a bit too much for a comment, if you are really struggling it could be worth considering a consultation with our business so we can look at things much more closely!

I often hear about Green Cheek Conures being bitey, but I have an 18 year old Sun Conure that has left scars on my finger. She has gotten better since I started training her. I have only started doing this last year and I had her 17 years. She only bites if she doesn’t want to step up. L. I still treat stepping up like a trick, and often use food reinforcements as I am less likely to get bit. I was wondering if conures can be moody at certain times of day. I usually will get bitten in the morning when she gets up and in the evening a couple hours before bed. She seems the least burry in the middle of the day.

It can be the case for sure. They have moods just like us and time of day or environmental factors can have a big impact on biting! Sun conures can be just as bad as green cheeks too! (Worked with them for a bit!)

Hey Isabella, Conures are notorious nipper biters! I'd look at what causes/triggers his biting. Is there anything obvious? Is he hormonal? Then work from there. Training is also always a great options!

Hey Kay, Firstly I understand your situation. It's difficult when our pets bite. Secondly it's really important to remember she's not doing it to be mean or because she hates you, there is likely another reason at play. It's usually down to a change in environment, diet or more often hormones. I'd watch some of my other videos on conures (and hormones) and see if you can identify anything going on. We also run a consultation service called Best Behaved Birds (links in all video bios) which could help. Sadly there's too many potential reasons to cover in a comment. BUT, biting can be helped. You can get through it, it'll just take time, patience and effort.

Hello! I have a male pineapple conure, I got him when he was 3 months old and now hes one year old! Its the first time I own a parrot and I’m trying my best to give him everything he needs (a big cage, lots of toys, a good diet etc), I’ve teached him how to step up, he says some words and he likes sitting on my shoulder as well sleeping on me , but the thing is, he bites, a lot and I don’t know what to do about that, I’ve tried everything to stop him from biting but he doesn’t seem to care, he sometimes bites so hard that I bleed, he also attacks my dad. I really don’t know what to do to stop him from biting because he really seem like he doesn’t care, if you can please I would really need your help.

Hey there, It can be really frustrating when dealing with biting, especially if we feel like we’ve tried everything. It’s great that he has a big cage, good diet and toys! It sounds like hormones and coming into maturity may be potentially feeding into things. So looking at managing hormones may help (sleep, diet, behaviour) There are other things you can try like soft targeting, watching for signs of biting before they happen, redirection etc that all help with biting. I have videos on these topics that would be worth watching ! Sadly without looking at things in detail and really going over everything I can only give general advice or direct you to other videos! If you need some dedicated advice then it might be worth considering a consultation with our business!!

I’ll tell you what unsubscribe. I make these videos to benefit you and other bird owners. I make very little money from them. Both me and my partner do it to help people first other things second. I am not on KZbin to serve you personally nor do I have the money to buy expensive equipment.
