We already visited the "Little Italy", NYC you're probably most familiar with, but have you heard of Arthur Ave? This neighborhood in the Bronx claims to be the "REAL" Little Italy in NYC, so of course, we had to check it out for ourselves. Mozzarella shops, cannoli, Italian grocery shopping, coffee, bakeries, salami tasting and eating at Enzo's- what do you think? Is this an authentic Italian experience in the USA?

Wow … you almost brought me to tears. I grew up in the Bronx in late 1950s. My mom used to drag me to the Italian stores. Salami hanging from ceiling. Sawdust on the floor. Amazing aromas. Ravioli and pasta. A million memories. Arthur Ave is pretty much what is left. So happy you 2 got to enjoy it !!!! God Bless you both.

I'm a South Carolinian who lived in Westchester County and worked daily in NYC for 15 years. Lots of places in the Tri State area will have their little enclaves of Italian American shops and restaurants but Arthur Ave is a world unto itself. You can find things here that you cannot find anywhere else - a paradise for cooks and food lovers and admirers of all things Italian. It is especially wonderful during the holidays and on warm summer evenings when you can stroll from shop to shop, having a gelato and hearing lots of Italian being spoken. On a warm, sunny day get a nice bottle of wine, some sparkling water, olives and roasted peppers, good bread , some really good cheeses and a blanket and flop on the grass somewhere in a nice park and relax, eat, take a nap. The best Little Italy, period. I miss it!

@@ThePasinishave you found anything authentic in Nashville? I’ve been so disappointed with the lack of good Italian in Nashville. Maggiano’s and Coco’s just aren’t cutting it 😂. If you have any recommendations help a girl out please! I have been all over middle TN looking for authentic Italian and have been severely disappointed. My great grandmother immigrated from Campania and I can’t find anything close to what I get from my family.

So delighted that you made the journey to the Bronx. I'm a third generation Bronx guy--my whole family lived in the Bronx from the 1920's so we went way back. Sicilian, Mio nonno vincenzo era un uomo d'affari proprietario di 5 barbieri: era molto conosciuto e rispettato nella comunità siciliana del Bronx. We grew up with the Bronx. I worked as a public-school teacher in Bronx high schools for 20 years, in fact just up the block from Arthur Avenue. I know the neighborhood well., and yes, it's the real "Little Italy". There are some neighborhoods in Brooklyn like Carrol Gardens, Bay Ridge and Williamsburg which have some real Italian shops and great restaurants, but honestly, I think Arthur Ave. is the best. Plus, there is the Bronx Zoo and Botanical Gardens not far from there and "must see" NY sights.

I love watching you drink the espresso and delight in the coffee cup. I am Welsh and live in Slovakia and we have great coffee here and always have espresso cups which are not so popular in the UK (although they have become more so in recent years I think). I just love buying cute little presso cups and I always feel so sophisticated using them. On my first trip to the Czech Republic when I fell in love with Central Europe grappa was the first drink I had and I learnt about great coffee here and he is so right about grinding the beans - once you start it is life changing. Thanks for another great joyful video - a bit of sheer joy in tricky times.

This was great. I can think of several famous ethnic neighborhoods where the original one turns into a tourist attraction while the people in question actually have another more real, down-to-earth neighborhood that’s not so tourist famous. San Francisco’s Chinatown and Chicago’s first Greektown immediately come to mind, where normal folks live and interact. And how satisfying to find the flavors that match your memories from home, instead of Americanized versions. That grocery story reminded me of going into a normal Greek or Turkish grocery with none of the kitsch. It’s something I didn’t expect with a population that is so long-established in the US. But NY is always a gateway city, that’s what makes it so special. Next time I’m in NY I’ll definitely check out Arthur Ave.!

I’m sure there are more incredible Italian areas that no one has heard of that you would never expect authentic Italian cuisine that you could investigate? maybe some different areas that we wouldn’t expect like somewhere in SE Asia like, Seoul, Japan, the Philippines & Hong Kong, strange places to have Italian I know but believe me they’re there you just have to search. I live in Dubai, UAE and we have a lot of great Italian restaurants here (according to me 😂) so why not come and try. Definitely next time I’m in NY I’m going to The Bronx to Arthur Ave to try try out some of your suggestions. Keep up the great work guys. Love from UAE xx

I went to a coffee expo. There was at least 400 vendors, pushing their coffee. I was working as a chef (I am a woman) I was my only employee. I had to pick out a new coffee for us to use. I wasn’t really finding anything I liked until I left. As I started to reach the double doors, I hear this man with an Italian accent call me over in a way that I can’t quite explain. His beckoning call was a little flirtatious. I believe him to be in his 60s at the time. He had the square stainless steel box and he pushed a button and all of a sudden these enormous aroma started wafting toward me and he pulled out this cup with an oil slick on top of nothing but pure coffee essence. It was the single most aromatic full of flavor coffee experience I’ve ever had to this day. Of course I had to buy his coffee.

The "Little Italy" in Manhattan has been disappearing into Chinatown for awhile now. I am a very long time Arthur Avenue shopper for over the last 40 years whilst living in Manhattan. The businesses on Arthur Avenue are mostly family owned, thus the specialization of services ("Do only what you do best"). I am particularly fond of Cerini Coffee company and have become friendly with the family. Many of the shops and particularly the Cerini coffee company will ship the products you so admired there (and some others from nearby vendors) for free, for a minimum amount order which I have never failed to meet and I know you will have no problem meeting. Casa della Mozzarella which you visited (along with the mozzarella the burrata is devine and you'd be hard put to find a better sandwich) and Borgatti's Ravioli are also great favorites. Madonia bakery (where Enzo's likely got their olive bread) and the Calabrian pork store I see were fortunately also on your itinerary Now the bonus! The prices of just about everything on Arthur Avenue seem to be the lowest around including prices from online shopping. On occasion I can beat say the price for everyday Rummo pasta on rare occasion on sale at a supermarket. But any real specialty pasta is always less expensive on Arthur Avenue. Truffle paste and sauces, speciality coffees, stuffed Calabrian peppers, fresh and dried sausages, Parmigiano Reggiano (yes even 36 month and older) are all less expensive at the Arthur Avenue brick and mortar stores than from online vendors. (Please also try Teitel’s Grocery) The price break also extends to equipment, all of my espresso machines, grinders, pasta formers, etc. Are less expensive from Arthur Avenue than from even online vendors. The machines from which you had your macchiatos were likely serviced and supplied by Cerini along with the coffee. Please note: they have reasonably priced very good coffee grinders! (I.e., Every thing is locally supported) I do hope you return and if convenient I’ll even give you a ride! Thank you for this video. I have lived in NYC for eight years and have looked for descent Italian food. I have been to Arther Ave already but I did not know of Enzo’s (I ate at another place and had a disappointing, Italian American experience.). But, I know the markets there are like what you see in Italy (I am not Italian nor Italian American-I am French, Polish, PR, Swiss German American third generation from FL but visited Italy for ten days in 2007 and loved the food and markets there). Little Italy sadly has changed because of inflation and gentrification and COVID hurt that part of town because of Chinatown having Chinese immigrants so that explains why. However, the West Village and Nolita had Italian immigrants so there are traditional Italian places spotted here and there. Little Italy still has good shops but the food is more Italian American which is ok but at the same time I crave real deal Italian food too. Once again, thanks and I hope you enjoyed your trip to NYC. I love it in NYC-great place.

I just discovered you with the Eataly video, which I enjoyed. So I went to check out other videos and immediately wanted to watch this one, hoping it would be what it is! Such a study in contrast. This has such soul. Beautiful video and I so enjoyed watching it. Definitely going to subscribe. Just have to exercise self-control and not binge watch as I have work to do! Love you guys and your style of video. Maybe because I’m French Canadian, from a small town in the far north of Canada originally, and I miss the sense of community living in a largely soulless suburb of Toronto. Merci!

Amazing and so informative! I’ve been to New York so many times and never been really in the Bronx. I am a true foodie and my mother created great dishes authentic and I’m never satisfied when I go out to eat. This video makes me wanna go to the Bronx Arthur Avenue and check out Enzos and this fantastic café. Thank you so much for sharing this experience.

As a first generation Bronx born and raised Italian, this brought back memories. My mom would take us kids on the bus to Arthur Avenue. We'd go into the market where the vendors would have a little something to give us kids. A bite of cheese, a bit of salumi, a cookie, etc. As a kid, it was magical. We'd all have a shopping bag to carry on the bus home. We'd go to Domenick's for dinner on special occasions. Family style, no menu. My dad would order in Italian and dishes of delicious food would start appearing. I haven't been to Arthur Avenue in 30 years. I'm happy to see it hasn't changed that much. A little, but still the heart of Italian Bronx.

I have just found your videos. Now I know you are Friuli. One of my favorite restaurants is in Vivaro. Gelindo dei Magredi. I was lucky enough to live to live in Italy for 4 years and I miss it soooo much. I really enjoy walking through Palmanova and Castello Miramare, and the mountains near Tolmezzo. Beautiful country and this video makes me want to go to NY now. Grazie mille!

I wish that my stomach and waistline could still handle eating Italian food. The tomatoes no longer agree with my stomach. 😢 I love watching the two of you trying different foods and deciding whether or not they are Italian enough!!

Tomatoes are not from Italy, they are from the Americas. Many many most Italian dishes - if you are able to visit restaurants like those on Arthur Ave or other places in nyc or areas with Italians - you can find plenty of dishes that do not include tomato :) hope you can find some!! I love a sauce made from zucchini - but other than Arthur Ave it’s hard to find even in nyc. Still many options without tomatoes! ❤

@@jennifermcgoldrick6323 I grew up next door from an Italian family from the old country that had just moved to the US. She taught me how to cook real Italian food from scratch. I am pretty sure that I know that tomatoes are not Italian, but thank you for your superior insight. Italian food is very rich regardless if the dish is made with tomatoes or not.

My husband and I had a delicious lunch in Florence. We were so full when a grandmother type walked into the restaurant selling cannolis. We heard a man at the next table tell two women they had to have one so we figured so did we. Decided to split one. Big mistake as it was so fabulous we should have had two each!!! Yes, the best food is in Italy with France being second. I do love French cheese.
