In 1967-68, American engineer Ralph Baer invented the first computer game consoles. The system plugged into a TV’s aerial socket and displayed a range of simple games in black and white. It included twist knob controls for two players and had games such as draughts, volleyball, golf putting and table tennis - some of which were copied by competitors. Baer also created handheld light guns that detected white blocks on the screen, which were used to play a target shooting game. When the console went on sale as the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972, it marked the start of home gaming.
