Superb work as always on this Channel & I just learned Oudenaarde (the city where I went to highschool) was part of the former Spanish Netherlands ❤❤❤Silly question perhaps but is this the “Prince George” in Blackadder, played by Hugh Laurie? 😅

These docs simply cannot be compared to anything else. They are the sine qua non of their kind. Not to mention that I could listen to Gareth Johnson’s voice all day, the deep and detailed research, the wonderful portrayals, and the steadiness and recurring style of the writing makes me search these out as soon as they are available. I think you have now done most of the English/British monarchs, have you not?

It is said that his keeping of mistress was more out of expectation that a man of his rank do so rather than any great intrinsic desire for anyone other than his wife. Recent biography of Henrietta Howard I encountered certainly took that view.

Considering the evilness of the British Raj and the misery it caused across the globe for many years, it's kind of strange to cite these "accomplishments" as positive ones. It all depends on your point of view, I guess.

His son's popularity among the public might of contributed to George II's hatred for him. They had a sad relationship. George II was said to be satisfied when he heard about his son's death.

An average monarch who was fortunate enough to be served by above average men. One point not addressed is that at the time of his death, George II was so heavily in debt, that his heir was forced to cede control of the Crown Estates to Parliament in exchange for the state assuming the debts. Thereafter, the Monarch and other members of the family were forced to live on an allowance voted by Parliament.

Hi. I think King George II was, according to my book, born on the 9th of November 1683, not on the 10th. Though he and his father George I (28 May 1660 - 11 June 1727) were unpopular monarchs from Germany, I'd say that George II was a bit more popular than his father. It is a pity they came to blows so much of the time together. I wonder if he wished he had a much better, nicer, and more respectful relationship with his dad in most of his lifetime. Even if the younger George did or didn't mourn the death of his unpopular father, I'm sure he possibly felt glad that he and his dad wouldn't have any further fall outs. But I think things took a dramatic turn for George II as he also fell out with his own eldest son and heir, Prince Frederick (31 January 1707 - 31 March 1751). I think there should be a documentary about Prince Frederick, Prince William, and Robert Dudley, a favourite of the long, late Elizabeth I. I think these documentaries are ever so very interesting, but I prefer to listen to and watch documentaries of people who were born in the Tudor, Stuart, and Hanoverian times. They appeal to me a lot more. It is them that I have a lot more knowledge on as well, really. George II had ten children born to him, but besides his duty to protect his family, he also led a large allied army of over thirty thousand men to victory at the battle of Dettingen against a smaller army of just over twenty thousand Fench. His third and youngest son, Prince William, Duke of Cumberland, was a favourite son of his dad. As George had a much better, nicer, and more respectful relationship with his third and youngest son, Prince William, Duke of Cumberland, (15.4.1721 - 31.10.1765), he was undoubtedly pleased with his favourite son when he heard that William, Duke of Cumberland had led a army of 10,000 men to victory at the battle of Culloden, defeating a army of 5 - 6,000 Scots on 16 April 1746, the day after the Duke's 25th birthday. After his great victory, he earned himself the nickname of "Butcher Cumberland." So I'm sure the ageing king was ever so pleased and delighted with his son for that great victory. I've also read that when the King's wife, Queen Caroline (1.3.1683 - 20.11.1737), died aged 54 after a severe illness, it is said that George was so upset that when she advised her husband to remarry, he refused, sobbing "I shall only have mistresses". He outlived her by almost 23 years, as he died suddenly on 25 October 1760 aged 76. He was the last king of England to be buried in Westminster Abbey. He was, by coincidence at the time, just a couple of weeks away from his 77th birthday. I'm now just waiting for the stories of George IV and William IV before all of the monarchs of England have had their stories done and told in the end eventually. So I hope they're not too far away from being put up and presented. Hope to hear from you shortly. Robert 2.2.25
