My husband wouldn't let me have birds the entire 41 years we were married...we do have dogs & cats. I finally bought my own home and now I can have my birds. I have always wanted a parrot, preferably a cockatoo, of some type, but know at 62, I would definitely outlive it. No one in my family would adopt it after I'm gone. Maybe in heaven...I do however, plan to get some parakeets. I n my house, he has NO say over what I do anymore!

Even sits inside my polo shirt with his head out when we go out on the motorbike

Parakeets are awesome! I had one who would sit on my shoulder&"groom" my ear! She would make soft cooing sounds the whole time! She was just starting to talk when she died. Be prepared. If you want a companion,just get one bird so it will bond with YOU! If you get more than one,they develop "flock mentality"& will bond with each other& likely not interact much with you. There is one way to avoid this. Get one bird&completely bond with it. A year later,get another bird&put it's cage in another room. Completely bond with this bird,out of sight of the first bird. After a few months,put their cages side by side& let them get to know each other. Let them see you interacting with the other bird. When they seem to be comfortable & happy with the presence of each other,open both their doors&,after awhile,they will likely cautiously come out to greet each other. Have treats on hand to ease the tension. Or,you can just put each bird on top of its cage, leaving the doors open so they can "retreat" if they want to. The goal is to,eventually,buy a much larger cage&have both birds live together. The new cage is mutual territory. They will love having more room& having a companion for when you're not around. Also,put a lot of new toys in the cage. I had a purple parakeet,Delilah,who would get all excited when I bought new toys. When I walked up with a bag,she knew what was in it& would start to sing&rush back&forth on her perch&she would jump on her swing&swing fast! They're very smart!❤

​@Beccy_Boop that isnt entirely accurate. The average lifespan for a wild cockatiel is between 12-15 years, but ones in captivity can live between 16-25 years. My family had one who was around 21 when he died. I think the world record is something like 35 years old.
