It boggles my mind that some of these malls are successful and others are completely dead.

The Christiana Mall was opened in 1978. It has a very strange layout because it originally had two wings, one anchor on each end and another anchor in the middle. In the 90's, they made an addition to the mall that connected the middle section to one of the ends, essentially adding a triangle shape to one wing. Then they connected the triangle to the middle of the other wing of the mall where the current food court is located. It made no sense. The Target store was originally a Wanamaker's that was part of the 90's addition. The Nordstrom store was originally a Strawbridge's with one of the largest four-sided clock towers in the country. Christiana Mall also had three water fountains which I believe are all cemented over. How does a Delaware mall become a dead mall? Great question. At one time, the Concord Mall was just as busy, if not busier, than the Christiana Mall. The Pennsylvania state border is less than a mile from the Concord Mall and lots of folks from Pennsylvania would shop at Concord Mall. The story I was told is that the Apple store was originally interested in the Concord Mall for its Delaware location but eventually decided on the Christiana Mall location, which has the highest sales in the chain, even better than their NYC store. Woolworth's leased a large chunk of Concord Mall right behind Santa and the large mall fountain. Woolworth was diversifying their businesses back in the 80's and started opening Burger Kings alongside some of their stores. Turquoise and earth tones were popular motifs back in the late 80's and the Concord Mall Burger King had that color scheme. Woolworth's closed in the 90's but the parent company kept the Burger King open. That Burger King is now used as storage for the mall and some of the stores.

Thanks Captain for the tour of the two Delaware malls. I used to visit the Concord mall on a regular basis especially at Christmas time. For years I was a figure skater at the Skating Club of Wilmington that had its rink just off I-95 and rout 202 Concord Pike that is the main road that passes the mall. Today Boscov’s basically generates the most traffic for the mall. I did shop a few times at the Sears store in that mall. I bought my last digital camera there that was on sale. As you mentioned the best thing for us Pennsylvania residents is the no tax on items that were taxable in PA. Since Concord mall is just across the border from PA it usually did well with stores that would have cost a higher tax in PA. However like most malls and stores it is hurting because of people preferring to shop on line and get it delivered. I have passed by the Christiania mall many times but never stoped because it always seemed busy. I guess they have the right combination of big and smaller stores people want to shop at. I do know they have a large Target store there and like the Springfield mall in PA drives good customer traffic to the mall.

I used to go to the Skate Club of Wilmington many years on weekends during the 1980's and spend time and money at the Concord Mall with my friends. I didn't and still don't like Christiana Mall although today it is much better than the Concord Mall.

Yeah Strawbridges was 3 floors back in the 90s. 1st floor was mens...2nd Floor...wonens...3 rd floor appliances beds furniture
@johnchambers85283 күн бұрын
Before Strawbridges closed this was their biggest store outside downtown Philadelphia. The Concord mall had more items than their other suburban stores including furniture and other items for the home on the third floor.
@CountryLizzard3 күн бұрын
Youre lucky u got 3 floors. Ours in Dover at the dover mall was only 1 floor but it was huge. Then it turned into Macys. But I think Macys closed in dec. 2020 or January 2021. Our dover mall is pretty empty these days. They got rid of the movie theater this summer. I think it was carmike cinamas then AMC in 2019
@trenchik833 күн бұрын
Yeah you’re confused the Macys furniture outlet store is a different store than the Macys department store. Which whatever used to be strawbridge. The three story furniture store is still there. It’s just mostly empty.

Great video Capt. , I moved down to milton D.E. about 3 years ago from schuylkill country P.A. .....it was the best decision ever ....you have no idea over the course how much you save by not having to pay sales tax on things , not to mention property taxes and income taxes as so much lower than what P.A. is.....there is also another good mall in Dover you have to check out, keep up the good work.

You should check out the brandywine town center (where that target is). It is one of the weirdest malls out there. It looks like an inside mall but it's all just anchor stores with separate entrances. And yeah only been to the concord mall once and it was all weird vibes. Went to just the macys furniture but the whole store felt moldy. Rent must be cheap. Someone also got killed in the parking lot at the fair.
@johnchambers85283 күн бұрын
This shopping center is also one of the reasons the Concord mall has lost business. It is just across the PA state line and has Target and many other stores of interest. But it is more of a traditional outdoor shopping center than a mall since there is no interior connecting the various stores and the large movie theater at one end. It also has some restaurants as well to eat at. So you can find almost anything you would want at this shopping center.

Christiana mall is better than Dover mall where I am. Ours in dover is empty....they shut down the movie theater carmike 16 this past summer. The other mall we had here in Dover was the blue hen mall but that been gone since 80s or 90s. The blue hen mall is now a bunch of state offices. Everyone goes to christiana mall or King of prussia in pa or nj

Thanks for visiting the great state of Delaware Captain, North Delaware is truly a sister of Philadelphia. There is so much intertwined history. Due to your passion for colonial architecture and history, I’d recommend a deeper dive into historic New Castle and it’s battery park; great place for a scoot. Wilmington (Rockford park and the surrounding neighborhood) as well as Newark (home of the University of Delaware and it’s blue hens [there are no actual blue hens]) would both be great scoots. Thanks for visiting Delaware again captain. 💙💛 (p.s. I am one of those email types, sorry for sending an email before)

I’m really confused about the timing of his recordings and postings. I thought he records on one day and posts the video the next day. So, if the video was posted today (Monday), it would have been recorded yesterday (Sunday). I was actually at the Concord Mall yesterday, and my main reference point was Café Riviera. They had an Eagles buffet, which was surprisingly legit. But my point is, this video must have been recorded yesterday (Sunday) because the sign would have been out in front of the store at the time of filming.

I wonder why Boscovs is still open after Sears , JC Penney have fallen?
@johnchambers85283 күн бұрын
Boscov’s is most likely why this mall is still open. In our area Boscov’s usually is a good traffic generator. They always have good sales on a weekly basis and still carry a good line of things people want. Macy’s is the next most likely store to close since their prices are usually higher than other stores.

Has a mall ever asked you to stop filming? Adam was at Mall of America and they asked him to stop filming even after verification of his identity. I get that you’re giving them free publicity, the thing with Adam seemed like they thought he was trying to get information on security, etc. Just always curious about your process, now I feel weird about asking
