"They say Japan was made by a sword. They say the old gods dipped a coral blade into the ocean, and when they pulled it out four perfect drops fell back into the sea, and those drops became the islands of Japan. I say, Japan was made by a handful of brave men. Warriors, willing to give their lives for what seems to have become a forgotten word: honor."

I think we,Japanese, learned to appreciate everything in daily life. Rising sun, shining moon, ocean that give us food, mountains that give us variety of food growing in ground, stone statue (ojizousan) who protect people in the area , etc. Being humble, honest, study and work hard, appreciation and respect are taught when I was a kid. Team work is also valued than individuality. I feel like samurai DNA is passing down to us . However, things are rapidly changing lately in. I hope these precious things last forever.

The only way you personally can help is to make sure you pass these ideals to your own children and hope they’ll do the same. If you can inspire your inner circle and your children can do the same, that’s how you can preserve these values and customs. I’ve never been to Japan, but I also come from a country with a very long history (Greece), and I understand what it can be like to see those values and knowledge going away with each generation in favor of a more dry and shallow lifestyle so as to not appear “old fashioned”.

What I love about this movie is that where most other movies go to the "White savior" angle where a white man comes into a tribe of a different culture and saves it from destruction, in this movie it's the white man that was saved by the culture. Dude was a broken man on the edge of destruction and was saved by the beauty of this culture that was so different from his own.

When I was stationed at Misawa Airbase, Japan, one of the many tours I took while in Japan included a quick stop to view the Pacific Ocean a very high cliff. In order to access the view from the cliff, we had to walk through a bamboo forest. The was a slight wind blowing through the bamboo forest from the ocean current that afternoon that instantly put me a peace while walking through. The wind blowing through the reeds and the bamboo leaves gently rustling in the wind is forever ingrained in my memories. One can only experience this sense of peace if you were there, walking in a bamboo forest next to the ocean..

I was walking down a forest path and there near a cliff overlooking the sea the wind was blowing in with cherry blossoms and a deer crossed my path. waited and then proceeded to crouch down and start chewing on a few of the flower petals. The scene will forever be etched in my memory and it is one I will never forget. It was such a spiritual experience for me.

@JesusLovesGunViolence No leader in history ever had absolute power. If they did, they could logically change the world without the need of having any follower. Well, were there any? An idiot is someone who speak without facts. In in eradicating such foolishness, there lies honour. If using cuss word is also a sign of stupidity, simply because the speaker wants to serve facts but she / he doesn't have any. So she / he substitute it with those dirty words. It also shows signs of psychological problem, at the inability ro verbally addrress the issue at hand by thinking & facts. Mahatma Gandhi. Faced suffering, followed by millions, lead them to independence. That's honour, in being him and in following him, but not necessarily obey him like God. Soekarno. Faced exile etc, lead Indonesia to independence. That's honour, in being him or to follow him during the fight for independence. Muhammad. Lead billions to light from darkness. And if you want to foolishly take him similar to those terrorists, read the Qur'an & hadith first. Try to find any justification for any terrorism there. So, refelct yourself on a mirror. You're clearly speak against honour by simple generalization because you yourself have none. Perhaps because of idiocy, perhaps because of mental problem, or a mixture of both. Many leaders also made mistake. And as honour lies in upholding the truth & justice, it is honour in reprimanding them & refusing their orders when they make mistake, instead of obeying them totally. That won't be honour. Think before speak.

Nobody says otherwise. We need Cruise’s character because otherwise, we can’t understand Katsumoto and his culture (why would he need to explain to one of his own?), but he’s our point of view character. Katsumoto and his men are the title characters, “The Last Samurai”. Algren was the one who witnessed the last Samurai.

@@AristonSparta Any Japanese history book on the pre-Meiji era backs up that the samurai were mostly corrupt by then. It runs very counter to the romantic ideal of the noble warrior of service, but that's what happens in nations with a ruling military class. It's really straightforward, if not pleasant. One class has the power of life and death; those underneath wishing to not be bullied or killed learn how to bribe and blackmail and spy. Corruption outpaces honor, and becomes the way of things. Thus fell the samurai. It doesn't mean the ideals of Bushido are valueless - only that they were not practiced by many who had the opportunity. It is similar to the relationship between western knights and Christianity.

Great movie. Most of the film production took place in Taranaki New Zealand, one of the most beautiful place on earth. Mt. Taranaki is split image of Mt. Fuji. People of New Plymouth where Tom Cruise and film crew stayed in Taranaki made a big stone sign " Welcome to Tomanaki" in front of town. Tom Cruise liked that resemblance of Taranaki and Tomanaki and donate money to public school there.

In the movie I like and agree with the way the Japan people’s act and treated all the people’s back then their culture was honest and stood for respect and honor and doing the right thing forgiveness - working hard and by a code not taking anything for granted - and nowadays it seems they have led their way like Americans too ! Stand for nothing and have little respect for honesty or truthfulness - same as Americans troubling to see how both cultures ended up in the same place and respecting nothing and having no trustworthiness whatsoever either - probably why things are the way they are currently ! Sometimes I question why Congress even exists ? 😔💁 can’t even protect the election our rights to vote it’s worthless - got Vladimir voting for everyone ! I like how the brother pronounces his last name - can’t imagine learning their language that’s amazing Ron what about us ? What about trust ? Heard back to you a lot lately on the radio - 😔

the idea of samurai to me is over romanticized both in europe ( cause is exotic and fascinating ) and in japan ( cause it's useful to society to impose the crazy japanese work ethic over people ). Samurai means "to serve" but they always forgot to tell you who was the one to serve. Not the people, on whom they had power of life and death even if a peasant only dare to look them wrong. not the honor. But the daimyo wich were land lords, greedy, treacherous, always looking for power and money. Bushido was basically a code of obedience built around the buddhist ( like the fact that life is an illusion and you have to think like if you're already death ) and shinto culture ( like in the video, life in every breath, in everything around you ) wich the puppeteers ( daimyo ) used to control their puppets ( samurai ) imposing on them obedience and discipline. As deep and respectable bushido was it wasn't more than a leash to take the soldiers class in their place to me.

Agreed. Many of the Samurai were warlords, some were little better than a glorified mafia, ruling the peasants with fear and intimidation. And the Samurai tried to delay and prevent many of the social and economic reforms in the 19th century that aimed to improve living conditions of the lower-classes in Japan.

obedience and discipline as control...well i d prefer that to todays greed, self-centeredness and plain disregard of everthing else but the own self...i still admire the samurais and the japanese culture. compared to whats ruling us ..who wouldn t ?? the samurais may not have been super heros or flawless, in that i agree, they were human after all. but the idea of loyalty and honor seems to me mutch better than our oh so civilised and evolved perspective of life. at least thats only my humble opinion.

Yeah, there's always a tendency to praise things just because it's old and different to our current way. There are many things romanticised about samurai and it's like the stupid things (like killing yourself) is overlooked by people. That said, the samurai have profound spiritual and disciplined outlook on life that is really beautiful - i think a modern day person could really benefit with some of it

I respect your opinion, BUT it's not cool that you do it here... If you look for the "dark side" of things, you will always find it... Despite of all the bad things you could have found about them...The movie's intention is trying to portrait all those that are inspiring... I'm sure there are some works out there that would show those bad things about the samurais...For instance, If there's any movie or documentary about Kobudo, you might find some good stories about peasants kicking some samurais butts. Perhaps you would enjoy watching and commenting there instead of doing it here where the idea is to get the good things about them with the sole purpose of inspiring good...

But it had no chance to avoid the transformation of Japan. From this point of view their death is a big waste of valuable lives. Well, that's just a story anyway :-)

Imagine if all daily studied a martial art with all its inherent and intangible qualities? The elements of self-worth, respect, confidence, rigour, refinement, perseverance, dedication…etc, would be enriching and enduring. The Vikings had the capacity to activate whole villages and towns in order to defend. Henry VIII enacted rule where all had to practise archery before church on Sunday… The Samurai weren’t the only culture that upheld virtuous conduct, such was fundamental to the Code of Chivalry. Irrespective, a superb movie on so many levels. Osu.

What is medicine for one can be poison for another, or a rough stone, but no more than a stone. If you find one land to be the home for you, don't assume it should be best for everyone. Before you are American, Japanese or whatever flag you swear by, you are you. You have your name, your character, what you value, your principles, experiences, thoughts and desires and so on and so forth. You may fit many patterns, but they may not fit you. Before you respect others, respect yourself. Respect is earned and you must first earn it with yourself before you can give and receive respect when appropriate. Respect is not taken at sword point nor by the hands of oppression. Time and Nature take no sides and their rules are not our own. Nature, though structured, has had it's own shake-ups. For someone to say you are born into a tier and destined to stay in that level, would die by nature's will. Such is the fallacy of the ridged. For someone to blindly accept change, would die by nature's will. Such is the fallacy of the malleable. For nature rejects fate and takes its future for itself. To flex and become unbending at will. It is the pattern that is always changing and constant. The force that we are a part of. Our own patterns within the patterns of humanity. And to restrict yourself by buying into propaganda is to accept the flaws of destiny and die unfulfilled. Samurai were no different than knights. Many were scum. Many were generally "ok". Few were good. Many were nobles and killed for slights. Though the cultures were different, the stated virtues were the same, but let themselves be molded by patterns unsuited for them. Thus the reality: many were scum, many were "ok" and few were good because it was right, many were "good" because of personal gain and all were pawns to be discarded and played by the chessmasters. Japan isn't all that it's cracked up to be and neither is America or any other country. If it's right for you, then it's right for *you*.
