"In order for a person to make profit..." 17:00 I am probably missing something but when two people get more done due to cooperating. Lets say alone we can make 10x in a day, but together we can make 30x. If we split it down the middle, I'm paying you less and you're paying me less than what we added. After all, if I/you can only make 10 alone, and with my/your addition we can now make 30, we both added 20. Unless we both get 20 from 30, we're evil exploiters. I don't think that's how any of this works so I think I'm missing something here. And since the original 'full amount' is 10... why is it evil for two to get 15? At any time we could buy some raw mats, create stuff, and sell on ebay or some other site for the original 'full amount' of our worth, however much per time that may be (though there are laws and regulations preventing much of that which I can't comment on due to lacking knowledge into laws.). Furthermore, those who make 15 and don't spend it all, if we assume that it can be used or converted to food amongst other things like entertainment, then the time saved or gained from saving and spending differently than others could therefore be reinvested into means of production which might require the assistance of others, which goes full circle back to the point in co-op. When we pair the option of co-op & the option to self employ, it seems like a substantial amount of 'exploitation' gets removed from the equation.
@Jonathantheweirdo6 жыл бұрын
+blaze armoru If both alone make 10x, they are making a total of 20x. If they get together and make 30x each one is adding 5x by collaborating, if they get back 15x that's 10x plus the 5x they are making together. Nobody's being exploited there.

The problem is that anti-SJWs already have the entertainment focus, hence the large amount of young and otherwise new people "joining the cause," so to speak. This is still lacking for the SJW side in an important way. Kids don't care about research and scientific backing, they are drawn in by the emotion and personality and when they set THOSE personalities as authorities in their eyes, THEN they listen to the actual points. SJWs who want to win people over could be grasping the selfish and egoistic reality of how people operate a bit better. A common belief seems to be that people deep down are altriustic, but I would argue that they are ultimately self-interested, and only practice altruism when it benefits them emotionally or in some other way.

@coriander48533 жыл бұрын
@@tombrett590 I think the key part is in whether or not the person wants to participate in the system where they uphold the law via killing. If a government were to designate someone as an executioner in spite of their desire not to, and that person kills someone as a part of that system, I would say that they have done manslaughter and not murder. That murder would be upon the person who made the choice between life and death. But if a person were to volunteer to be someone who either executes people or maybe they volunteer to be a person who judges whether someone gets the death sentence, that person is a murderer because they chose to be in a position where someone’s life was in their hands. This in part is why I agree with the statement, “ACAB” because cops chose to uphold a corrupt and unjust system. No person is born a cop or an executioner, there is a point where they accept that they are okay with murder.

@othmaneanani89954 жыл бұрын
sali Your question is a logical fallacy. The death of people in Ukraine was because the communists took the harvest of the year, torn down the land owners and sent them to the gulag. A year after, and because there was no land owner to invest and circulate the economy by hiring farmers to farm lands and therefore everybody at least would not be starving, people started starving and then turned into cannibals. Because the only time people would be starving under capitalism would be because there is something out there that stops the economy and you can't do anything about it like the black Thursday 1929 where the government would try to make banks cut the interest rates and cut the taxes to loosen things up but the only reason why people would be starving under communism is because there is an inherent feature that fetters people from thriving and try to hand down a piece of bread and failed in the long term like the Holodomor famine 1932-1933 in the Soviet Ukraine. There is no incident in the history of capitalism where the rich is getting richer and the poor are eating themselves except if there is crisis that affect both classes or if the poor are outside the hierarchy of capitalism like in some countries in Africa and I am african so I can vouch for that. Now my question to you would be to give me any of moment where the capitalist economy is thriving and the rich is getting richer but there are people starving, any moment of that? And please don't you ever use frivolous thinking and actual produce some intellectual thoughts

Obviously this is a fun joke, but the point is "throwing money at something" in the figurative sense still involves employing people in alienating work (especially alienating because what they are working on might not even benefit anyone at all) Whereas his point about throwing money at a sheet of metal is literally just throwing money at it. Money on its own does nothing, you need wage slaves to actually get work done and generate the wealth you want.

Oh, how evil, how malicious Karl Benz was for daring to own a gasoline engine factory which led to the creation of the automobile! How many man-hours of work were wasted due to his shenanigans! I grew up during that transition from Communalism to "Cyberspace is going to set you FREE!" In fact, I was a big part of it and truly believed computers were going to "change the world for the better". I started out as part of a small software company in the early 80's that had big dreams of "changing the world" but that ended up mostly wrote gaming software or the tools to create gaming software because that's where the money was. So I left. I then went to work for a retail outlet that I was impressed sold mostly Apple products and educational software to schools and universities, with lofty goals of "empowering the next generation with knowledge and creativity" but they were ultimately so concerned about their bottom line that they quite often took advantage of school budgets to sell overpriced crap to eke out a profit. So I left. I then went to work for a "non-profit" hospital to run the Information Technology department, thinking I was part of the machine "helping to save lives", but then had to sit through board meetings where we did cost-shifting of prices that disproportionately placed a financial burden on the poorest people in our community (the uninsured or under-insured), and whose executive management voted for bonuses for themselves while cutting employee benefits. So I left. I then went to work for a public health department as support staff for their computer systems, helping to ensure they had the tools necessary to carry out public health tasks, but witnessed their management systematically conspire to eliminate an employee's job because she came out as transgender (instead of recognizing the public health challenges and discrimination she faced and support her). So I left. Then I went to work as computer support for a mental health organization and watched them place grant money ahead of patient treatment and who fired the manager I worked for because he didn't play the right kind of politics in the organization. So I left. For a short while I was into blockchains and crypto with the hopes that it would revolutionize our economy and help to close the gap on income inequality. Until I saw people using it for ponzi schemes to mass immense wealth for themselves. So I left. I no longer have anything to do with computers - they are just one more tool enabling and in many cases even accelerating the greed of Western culture. Pontius Pilate was the perfect symbol for this piece. I feel like I washed my hands many times until I finally learned "damn, fool, just don't get them bloody anymore, mmkay?"

I disagree with the correlation "computers = tool for evil" as it can be assumed from your comment. As with any other technology, computers can be used for many reasons and purposes. And it's people who fill it with reason. Still, technology can shape behavior. E.g., social media a specifically designed to make us spend as much time online as possible. Recent Abigail's video on Transhumanism covers it very well. However, it says more about the intentions of those who designed this software, and not the technology itself.

I don't know how many comments you actually read given your popularity, but I do actually wish to convey this message. Olly, really liked the final section of your video. You said something rather important, but fell short of a proper conclusion. The question of 'who will speak up for those workers in China and the Congo' is extremely important. The reason why the Left (and by that, I mean the likes of you) feels alone and isolated in most of the world is precisely because even the most serious Leftists preceding our generation signed a comfortably contract with the capitalist organisation of society. I'm from India, and can therefore speak in relation to my country. Most leftists (here they are just socialists and communists) in the wake of failed revolutionary action (warranted or not, justified or not..eg naxalbari movement) simply integrated into the system of governance and bureaucracy. I move around in these circles and know (or know of) such people (former Naxal sympathisers, trade union activists, student activists etc.), and the justification put forth by people with regards to their employment within the government services was almost always that their positions (as professors, bureaucrats, govt sanctioned NGOs) would help amplify their progressive message. But the reality was that most of them actually began to enjoy the prestige and the privilege of their positions. Their messages, even if sincere, were disconnected from much of what was really going on in India. They saw a meteoric rise in their own living standards in the two govts under PM Manmohan Singh, and their academic and bureaucratic progressivism just became a sort of non-alcoholic beer. They failed to be an organic whole with the people on whose back bone their new and comfortable lives were built. Through those years, a severe lack of trust separated the (now) two strata. Thus, when a right wing govt marched in in 2014, people wanted to hang these "intellectuals" who had essentially sold out to the system that crushed millions under its might, especially AFTER globalisation hit India. In a previous video, you had claimed that the reason why the Left would win is because we solidarize with the *weak* . And that is the correct formula. But does the Left, in concrete, in its _dasein_ form, really solidarize with the weak and the meek? That is why most of us feel sort of left out or alone in the online world, because our (real) politics is suppose to bring to the surface those people who are the disenchanted, disavowed and alienated within and by the current system (the white worker, the Vietnamese sweatshop, homosexuals in KSA and so on). That is the *trust* we ought to build. Everything apart from that, as Zizek would say, is *pure ideology*.

If I may, I'd like to add a similar case from another postcolonial country: Here in Colombia we've been having failed revolutionary action for 60 years, which means we've basically been at civil war for 50 years, depending on how you look at it. And people are sick of it. All mainstream support for the guerrillas died in the 80s, when people grew tired of violent actions and war, specially after the extremely complex and unfortunate siege of the Justice Palace. We've had too many massacres to count, be it by the guerrillas, the army, or the paramilitary forces. Now, in the early 90s there was a peace process with one of the guerrillas, the M 19, and a few others. And then they became politicians, just like any other, with their bureaucracies and their publicity and their campaigns. But you know what? This had its advantages, too. For two reasons. First, in 91, under the centrist-ish liberal government, there was a constitutional convention and assembly, which gave us a new constitution, where the recently demobilized groups had a say. And that constitution is so much better. Are things good now? God, no, it's still a mess. But at least we share an idea for a better country. We went from being a "State based on rule of law" to "Social state based on rule of law". No one will question whether Health and education should be rights, as it happens in the US. We understand that they are and they must be, and even if our health system is a mess, we understand what it "should be" in a way that we didn't before. Second reason, bureaucrats as they are, the demobilizing of the former guerrillas helped us have real leftist parties on the ballots and in public positions. The democratic pole is a leftist party and it is a major party in the country, a step forward from the two party system we used to have. This year we have one of our most politically diverse congresses in our history. And this year, for the first time ever, an actual leftist candidate was the runner up for the presidential elections, a former guerrilla member no less (if you ask me he was not a very good candidate, but still, it's important). And their presence in congress and in local administration has done a lot of good for a lot of people. Navarro Wolf was a guerrilla rebel, and he did great things as mayor and governor, and thanks to the party he helped found we have real leftists in congress doing good work. Yes, it's integrating into the system, but having leftists working within the system has been an undeniable benefit. After 50 years of a failed civil war which has caused the death of thousands of innocent people, we leftists here prefer that. (Right now we're experiencing our second year of a very troubled peace with the FARC. It might work, or it might not, but it's better than the alternative, which is continuing civil war)

It's so beautiful to see that other Latin American countries getting a better grasp of reality. Here in Honduras our far-right government continually harasses leftwing activist, that we have very few of, they killed most of them in the 80's, and the killings never stopped, Jannet Kawas was an environmentalist that was killed in the 90's, and we even got more recent examples like Berta Caceres who was murdered in 2016. Many were massacred under the "leftist" Mel Zelaya in a controversial agrarian reform, but even this was to left wing for the powers that be, and they deposed him in '09, so they could forcibly install a far-right government that started with Pepe Lobo in 2012, and it heavily cracks down on "crime" (But it's mostly petty crime and political dissidents, the Narcos, the real danger, remains intact, only the gangs that oppose the bigger narco fish get taken out. ) So things are pretty grim here, our Partido Nacional has been historically liked to big business since it's foundation by a Military general Manuel Bonilla Chirinos. Since the foundation of the National Party, Honduras has had 13 Nationalist presidents. Manuel Bonilla was the first (1903-1907), and the most recent is the current president, Juan Orlando Hernández. And all of them deregulated the market and helped privatize business and government to the extent that it uses its catastrophes to drive privatization further. Now extending even to healthcare and education, so we are primarily a worse off version of the States with an actual despot as a leader, he also flaunts his military around like the classic caricature of dictators. And yes, unions are heavily discouraged. But why aren't we the North Korea of the Americas? Because it's a right-wing government, and we are allies for the States and puppet states to flock over to them whenever they need diplomatic backing up. We are a failed State, and even great attempts for revolutions like the one that occurred in 1954 ended in nothing but reform and slightly more centrist liberal governments for a while, but mostly because the US backed the military in exterminating the revolutionaries. And they still do, to this day, kill students, this week there are four down, two of them with substantial evidence that special police forces killed them, our journalist advocate for it openly on television. From where I am standing it is clear as day that violence is the only thing that keeps the system going. Only by denouncing the conservative creed of working for a living we shall end this, we need to take care of our needy and not bent to the will of the capitalists, but since the capitalists have help from the outside keeping the status quo, that's pretty hard to do.
@eliasbischoff1764 жыл бұрын
You sort of bring up a question here that I have been asking myself for years now: Can a person living in a society built on injustice be judged for profitting from this injustice, if the society does not allow an alternative? I live in a capitalist country. I own a laptop. I have to own a laptop, because without it, I would have no chance at my education (I am studying social work, not to be confused with social studies) In my buying this laptop, I supported a system of injustice. The people who made this laptop are exploited and mistreated horrendously. But I use it for studying a subject that will allow me to work in a profession that has litterally been defined as helping those, who have been left behind by capitalism. (If I remember correctly, is was Heiko Kleeve, who said that in his work on system-theory. I might be wrong though. Also I think he didn´t invent system theory.) Without this laptop, I could not study this subject. I might be able to share a computer with someone else, to do the bare minimum like sign up for exams and courses, but then I still use a computer. I might decide not to study, do some other work, but is there any work today that does not rely on computers? I might decide not to work at all, only to be called a burden on society by those who profit from injustice. But on the other hand, were I to say that it is not my responsibility, because it is the only way to live that this society has shown me, it brings up more questions. How well do I actually have to live? I bought this laptop, because my old one had a broken screen. Half of the screen still worked, though. Would it be more accaptable, to keep using the broken one, so that my support for the system would be more limited? Do I need as many changes of clothes as I have, knowing that most of them are made under inhumane conditions? When does neccesity turn to greed, when does a need for comfort turn into lazyness? I have not found an answer to these questions yet.
@heimwehwonach8094 жыл бұрын
I think this circles back to the argument, that capitalism is in itself flawed. I see these questions asked a lot and often it leads to a call of consuming less or more ethically. And while I generally agree, there is also the problem of shifting the responsibility of a systemic issue onto individuals who have no choice but to live in this system (meanwhile, of course, the system is nothing without its constant reproduction by individual people). As with your example of your (or my) laptop which was produced under unethical circumstances. You explain very well how it is nearly impossible to have a job, an education etc. without some sort of technical device. Now that means you are born in a society that expects you to use a laptop, in other words your participation relies on this device. At the same time I suppose we both live in countries which try to abide human rights. Now here's a dilemma because you cannot have a laptop and both not exploit workers who were involved in making it. However, and here I will argue from an interventionalist point of view: shouldn't the state ensure that the things we (need to) consume are ethically sourced? Is it really the responsibility of each individual to worry about their every purchase. Especially in a consumer society, a capitalist society that fails to function without consumerism? I feel like a lot of times in these conversations the individual responsibility (and impact for that matter) is highly overrated and we tend to forget that the state could very well intervene in the production of goods and set standards for the ways in which products are being made. I live in Switzerland and two weeks ago we had a referendum about the so called "corporate responsibility initiative". The aim of this initiative was to have swiss companies commit to making sure their production process as well as their suppliers comply with certain standards to protect people and nature. While the referendum gained the people's vote it was overturned by the parliament unfortunately. But this is an example of a demand we are allowed to pose to our governments. So there is no simple solution to our laptop dilemma, especially not one that we as individuals would be able to apply, but there is a possibility of setting (ethical) boundaries to a free market that violates human rights in the production of consumer goods. And I feel this is sometimes missing from the discussion about consumerism and buying ethically etc.

Your concerns pinpoint,for me, the absolute evidence that we live in a capitalist dystopian world, where although some try to fix things,the capital already won and we are just running in a hamster wheel producing gains to the masters, believing that if we run in a certain way, either slowly or fast or whatever, we will change things. I very much appreciate the discussion of the video (and other videos you upload). The only thing that stuck out for me was that in the 'to buy or not to buy che guevara shirt' debate, it was never mentioned that you're still going to wear 'a' shirt, likely made in the same or a similar place under the same or similar conditions. The real point is to be completely aware of the fact that the counterculture symbol is being sold to you, and that buying it is no different to buying something non-counter-culture. Your emphasis on empathy with those who are being exploited though is on-point however, and that is the approach I think we should take, even as we are forced under capitalism to buy things that are stained by exploitation. On the internet in leftist circles I frequently hear the phrase: "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism," which I agree with, but I think it's still important we understand and empathise with the plight of those who suffer, even if we are largely powerless to help them through consumer choices. We should never 'wash our hands' of the problem just because we cannot solve it simply.

Fair trade is obscenely expensive, especially if you consider that most fair trade companies are still companies that operate under wage labour and so no matter how much the workers are paid they are still not paid the full value of their product. Either the worker or the customer gets screwed. Plus, buying fair trade absolves of individual responsibility at best, makes things actively worse for exploited workers at worst. If a handful of people refuse to wear the unethically sourced Che Guevara shirt it doesn't actually have any impact on the company or the industry at large. Maybe some CEO has the idea of launching some fair trade subsidiary and selling overpriced "fair trade" things to a niche market, but that's it. If suddenly a statistically relevant amount of people were to boycott sweatshop labour, or computers built with unethically sourced materials and assembled in Chinese factories, then the owners of those companies wouldn't say "Yeesh, people really don't like us exploiting the poor. Let's give the poor money and then we'll make profit again, albeit less than we did before." No, they're going to say "Yeesh, sales are going down, better cut wages, lay off workers and make the remaining workers do double-shifts to maximise our profits." Imo, the only way to effectively use a boycott of unethical products is if the workers making those products are actively calling for one. If, say, some labour union in China made an announcement and told us that in this time frame we shouldn't buy products produced in their factories, so they can put pressure on their bosses for specific demands they've had time and resources to draw up, as well as deal with the backlash that's coming. Also boycotts, as very succinctly pointed out, need to be realistic for people below the poverty line. In the bus boycotts of 55/56 there were alternative buses provided by the organisers of the boycott so people could still get to work without driving themselves into bankruptcy. They didn't merely say "these bus companies are unethical, you should feel bad for using them". The second disadvantage of exclusively consuming 'ethically' is that you'd separate yourself from the average consumer - aka the common people, the masses, the proletariat, however you want to call them. In its logical extreme you'd be completely self-sufficient, probably in some mix of punk DIY-culture and urban farming, and never buy another thing in your entire life. That will remove basically any and all points of contact you have with people who aren't also self-sufficient urban agrarian punks and prevent practically any opportunity you might have to connect with people who are dissatisfied with capitalism (aka most of the world who are not rich, consciously or not) but who don't know much about the alternatives. TL;DR: There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, but there is no ethical refusal of consumption under capitalism either.

Great video! I disagree that charity is anti-capitalist. The norm that the poverty stricken and working class need to rely on the selective “goodwill” of the owner class to survive is a natural outgrowth of capitalism
@flippydaflip53106 жыл бұрын
It's "anti-capitalist" in the sense that it goes against the bullcrap pretexts capitalists themselves spout... and I think that's what Ollie was referencing. In truth, of course, it's little more to them than another investment (the "little more" here being their own ego-gratification, at best).
@Mooseplatoon6 жыл бұрын
Flippy DaFlip I'd argue that it's far more complicated than ego. I believe that charitable donations in our society are more about optics. Drake's "God's Plan" scheme is the best example I can think of. Drake gave something close to a million dollars away, but it wasn't out of altruism. It was a calculated investment, even though it was not a direct one. Good-will and media attention are valuable resources to the modern capitalist, but they cannot be bought directly in the way one can purchase something like gold or stocks; as such, the savvy investor must find indirect ways of purchasing them. When an investor wants to purchase good-will for their brand, the simplest way to do that is to donate to charity. They donate their time/money, which has the outward appearance of going against their self-interest as a capitalist, but is actually one of the safest investments they can make in the long-term. Tax-breaks and other financial incentives only serve to make things murkier, morally speaking.

A palliative for at least their conscience. Elon is a case in point. He's now scuttling off to China and once he moves production there, what then of his American employees? Where's his charity for them. I suppose he'll look in the mirror and say to himself he's part of the solution but not of the problem. He'll be improving the life chances of the Chinese workers, as the American ones can look after themselves. @briankoontz16 жыл бұрын
KZbin is a stage filled with Lords, of varying degrees of power. Google is the King, in whose domain the Lords live and swear fealty to. We are the peasants, who through our relative wealth over the barely living dispossessed billions of people without the access to and/or inclination to subject themselves to the "wisdom" of KZbin have the privilege of watching the Lords dance, ostensibly for our own benefit but either substantially or mostly for their own power, to allow them to bypass other Lords and to gain more favor with the King. A Parasocial relationship is a feeling by a Peasant toward a Lord. That is to say, it's the admiration and aspiration a peasant feels for a lord, who as we all know is far above him and can never be attained by him, just as an aspirational Dispossessed might have irrelevant feelings for a Peasant. Zizek claims to be a communist and we take him seriously, not because he's serious but because we ourselves are not serious. Zizek is lauding the game that we want to play - to pretend toward virtue while actually supporting the system of power that we ourselves benefit from. So Lord Olly, an aspirational figure who seeks to gain additional favor with the King, claims to be a revolutionary leftist, and probably mostly believes this himself. In order to appeal to a Peasant constituency that wants to pretend to be revolutionary one must actually believe one is revolutionary. The Material reality of King > Lords > Peasants > Dispossessed completely contradicts this nonsense game that Supreme Lord Zizek plays. The modern King has transcended humanity itself, becoming a corporation controlling the digital realm. The ONLY WAY to destroy the game is to redistribute wealth. There are no rhetorical or "educational" methods, no magical "Zizekian wisdom" that will lead to revolution. Only by flattening the economic reality of the world, by taking from current depositories of wealth and giving that wealth to the dispossessed FIRST, then when the dispossessed become peasants peasants will receive wealth, will the world become more democratic and humane.

Regarding the last bit... The problem I see is that both the complacency of not-talking about coltane and chinese workers, and the guilt of profiting off them by using the tools they make are, if taken to extremes, counter-revolutionary. Capitalism works that way, everything is tainted; we're always contradicting ourselves. We cannot escape stepping on someone else's head, even when actively trying to liberate them (or everyone) from this system, as the tools we use to fight for liberation (in this case, a camera and a computer) have been made under capitalist rules. The best we can do is to minimize the damage, be aware of it, and take small but decisive steps against it. To forget about the harm done would be to fully assimilate (as in "liberal"); but to focus on it completely would mean to become some sort of primitivist, effectively undermining the dissemination of your message, or shying away from any actions that need those tools to be effective. It's all muddy, but it's the mud we're all in.
