Chick Corea performed his only concert in New Delhi at The Piano Man Jazz Club. The event was a memorable highlight in the club's history and a significant moment for jazz enthusiasts in the region.
Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea (June 12, 1941 - February 9, 2021) was a pioneering American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader. Known for compositions like "Spain" and "500 Miles High," Corea played a crucial role in the birth of jazz fusion with Miles Davis in the late 1960s. He later founded the influential band Return to Forever in the 1970s.
Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, to a musical family of Italian descent, Corea began playing piano at age four. He moved to New York City to study at Columbia University and Juilliard but left to pursue a performance career, recording and touring with notable artists including Mongo Santamaria and Stan Getz. His early solo work, such as the album "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs," established him as a significant figure in jazz.
Corea's extensive collaborations spanned various musical styles, partnering with artists like Gary Burton, Herbie Hancock, and Béla Fleck. His later projects included the Chick Corea Elektric Band and its acoustic counterpart, the Akoustic Band. Throughout his career, he explored contemporary classical music and maintained a strong influence from Hispanic music traditions.
A recipient of 27 Grammy Awards, Corea's legacy in the music world is immense. He continued to perform and innovate until his passing in 2021 from a rare cancer. His contributions to jazz and fusion music remain influential, inspiring generations of musicians.
