Probably the best catch ever!!! It was truly amazing to witness such a classic bird such as this 42 year old DC-10-10(F) depart MIA. This is most definitely going down in the history books as one of the last operating DC-10-10(F) to fly in and out of the US. Wilfredo (Fellow spotter/friend of mine) was at MIA from 2 A.M. to capture the arrival, and then later I meet up with him around 5 A.M. to get the departure. It was well worth it! Enjoy :)

One of the most iconic looking planes in history. Movies from the 80s and 90s usually used the shot of a DC-10 landing when they had to film like an airport arrival or something. DC-10 and MD-11 are my two favorites ❤

*ThePilotFromNYC* This video is great, but just to clarify 100 percent. This jet was delivered to Continental Airlines as a commercial jet, line # 43, DC10-10, June 1972. [Yes, McDonnell-Douglas did make 8 - DC10CF(convertible passenger carrier/cargo) for Continental Airlines, and just 1 for United Airlines]. This original passenger jet N68044 was converted to cargo January 2000. TAB Cargo acquired the jet July 2007, henceforth the new call sign CP-2489. And sadly it was stored 2014. Beautiful vlog. *SUBCRIBED*

MD-10-10 & DC-10-10 are 2 the same by look but the yes the only difference is the Cockpit, but once an aircraft is changed from it's original form factor, that changes the value of the aircraft. Where as the DC-10-10 in this video ( CP-2489) has been the SAME since it came out of the factory many years ago, makes it very rare and is the ONLY original DC-10-10 series to operate in and out of the US. It will soon be replaced by a former FedEx MD-10-10 very soon.

FedEx's last DC-10 (N315FE) flew it's last flight in April of 2009. She was briefly retired, then brought back out of retirement sporting a new ACF as an MD-10. So any wide body FedEx tri-jets flying after April of 2009, were all MD-10 or MD-11 units. Some entities (like FlightAware and others) still mistakenly list these birds as "DC-10", even though they are in fact MD-10 aircraft.

From what I'm reading, FedEx is purchasing a lot of 767-300F aircraft, with the main purpose of pulling the older A300, A310, and MD-10 aircraft from the fleet. When that transition will be complete - no clue. It can't be long though, since they dropped from 90 MD-10s in their fleet in 2009, to 39 in 2017. ProgneSubisEastern Correct(active MD-10's aka DC-10 formerly). 39. But FedEx also has 59 - MD11's still in the air. (With many additional variations of both in storage). *FedEx still flys line number 6(sixth DC10-10 delivered to United Airlines, July 1971/call sign N365FE). It was refit to a freighter for FedEx around 1998, and updated again in 2006.* You may be somewhat accurate of the 10's, but not the MD11's(still relatively young compared to a jet manufactured in mid 1971). Great reference for certain.

@@cancelanime1507 No they are not. With the modifications that were made to the FedEx DC-10's, their designation was changed to MD-10 since operationally they were no longer like a DC-10 anymore (glass cockpit and elimination of the flight engineer position, for starters).

what a fantastic shot! I've seen quite a few plane spotter videos and have to say your filming of the take off was beautiful. you panned out nicely and rotated the camera smoothly! too bad you lost it in the sunrise at the end. it still made for a nice effect though lol

I also understand that the MD conversion increases the MTOW over that of the unmodified DC-10-10/30, ...and I stand corrected on the DC-10-10F...had no idea any were still flying in their "stock" configuration...thanks!

This was not the last DC10-10F to fly in the USA. FedEx is still using this aircraft.

All of the FedEx DC-10's were converted (in Italy) to MD-10's, with that program ending several years ago. The flight tracking sites still show them as DC-10's as that is technically the model of the airframe itself, but they are all MD-10's since they went through the conversion. FedEx hasn't flown an actual DC-10 with a 3-person flight deck in several years now. This video was titled in the manner it was because this old bird (which is now stored and hasn't flown in a while) is still an original DC-10 and still has the original 3-person flight deck.

FedEx uses the MD10, which is basically a 2 person crew, updated DC10. I'm pretty sure it's got the MD11 flight deck.

Jup. Md 11 cockpit, fly by wire, fadec, 2 persons crew updated cargo doors. By the way, US air force is also having 60 dc 10s but they're the military version called kc 10. They're used as Air Refueling tankers

Updating the DC-10 to the MD-10 most certainly did not add Fly-By-Wire, @@aviationtobi5556. That's not something you could just install during an update - the aircraft would have to be designed and built that way from the start. Neither the DC/MD-10 or the MD-11 are a FBW aircraft. Nowhere close. Where did you get that idea?

@ - Doesn't change the fact that the model of the aircraft technically changed when the upgrade / update took place. If there was no need to differentiate between them after the change, why did Boeing and FedEx make a point of doing it?

The DC 10 and the L1011 were my favorite planes to fly on they were some lovely jumbo jets and also the 747.i use to fly on those planes back and forth to my family reunions and college.it was like flying on a big Cadillac in the sky

I flew the L-10 for 5 years....never had the opportunity to fly the DC-10.....nice jet....very nice !!

I spent many hours on that TAB 10-10 number 2 engine working the thrust reversers and pneumatic valves and did engine changes on it as well I kinda do miss working the old birds, those engines are CF6-60 where the 10-30 have CF6-50's with higher thrust, the owner of the aircraft is Alfonso Reyes he is the owner of Centurion Air Cargo, this bird used to be in the Cielos del Peru fleet they had about 8 DC10. I remember they had N833LA and N831LA from Laker Airways (Freddy Laker) Those airplanes take a beating with all the shady stuff that goes on in that corrupted cargo empire.

No, FedEx only uses MD-10's and/or DC-10-30F's, this is a 10F series BID difference. No carrier in the US use the DC-10-10/F series anymore. The DC-10-10F in this video is an ORIGINAL DC-10-10F with the old steam gauges, 3 man Pilot config, and etc.

Not sure where you're going here, but I'll point out that the conversion from DC-10 to MD-10 didn't make the aircraft any newer. They're still the same old DC-10-10's that now have more modern cockpits with much newer avionics.

The blue was specifically used by Varig. In fact it was named Azul Varig (Blue Varig). Anyone knows if the aircraft was Varig anytime?

This is definitely not the last DC-10-10F, because FedEx still flies them now and it's Nov 14th 2016. I don't know how you got this is the last DC-10 in the US?. I just checked Flightradar24 and there is four FedEx DC-10-10F in the air right now flyying over the US. FedEx still has 27 DC-10-10F in their fleet and they're supposed to be phased out around the year 2020.

The DC-10 uses "dial-a-flap" selection. The performance chart for each individual runway shows the optimum flap setting based on weight and temperature. Headwind component is used if more than 10 knots and any tailwind is calculated as 10 knots (max allowable). The optimum flap setting is always the minimum necessary for runway length limitations, because with an engine failure, more flaps will decrease performance after liftoff. Slats are always extended for takeoff, but 0 degrees of flaps is an option based on performance calculations.

I never got into the MD deal either. A DC-9 was a DC-9-83 not an MD-83, likewise a D.C.-10-50 was never a MD-10-50 to me. And never a B-10-50, the MD-11 never had a DC designation, in a sense the DC-10 will live as long as the MD-11 does

Are there any still flying? Likely not. I know they produced the MD-11 as a knock off on the DC-10. I think many of those still are airborne. Seems I recall FedEx being a big operator of the MD-11.

fedex does still fly the dc-10-10! according to wikipedia they still fly 47 planes! 47 dc-10-10s and 16 dc-10-30s. also 64 md-11s. so this is not the last dc-10-10. fedex still flies them.

WRONG!....FedEx has NO DC-10-10 Series jet's AT ALL. All of there 10's Series aircraft are MD-10's which is a modified version of the original DC-10-10 Series. The info you read on Wikipedia is false, my cousin has been working for FedEx for over 20 years and if anyone knows anything about FedEx and there fleet, it's him. I also got the info from some of the most famous plane spotters in Miami, who know everything there is to know about planes.

Well the KC-10s are not md-10s so I guess you could call them a dc-10, in other words not that's not the last DC-10 in the US

You realize FedEx is still flying about 100 MD10-10 (28), MD10-30's (13) and MD11's (58).... So last no.

Can you please read the other comments? He was talking about a true DC-10 with a 3-person cockpit - not an MD-10 that has been through the upgrade. That has come up countless times in these comments.

I'll accept your picky point, but a MD10 is a DC10, regardless if two or three airmen are in the pointy end. Now accept this point. This is NOT the last of this type flying, variations, (KC10) DC10, MD10 and MD11 are ALL under the same airworthiness type certificate, all derivatives of the same type. That is my point. Further I don't recall any factory DC-10-10F Freighters being produced. So this is a "modified" DC-10 airplane, not the last of the originals. The actual last original DC-10 passenger flight was Biman Bangladesh Airlines in early 2014 to the UK.

What a pride for you-(Bolivia)-,having such a beautiful bird!!.I`m colombian,& since we in Colombia never,ever,had a DC-10,neither a DC-11,so I could never fly in such a wonderful aircraf!!.What a pity!! :-( !!!..If I had the financial means,I wouldn`t hesitate in buying a DC-11,to repair & to renovate it,to leave it almost as a brand new airplane,and to finally leave it,as my personnal airplane!!.I JUST LOVE IT!!!.-(Well,we have a say,-"We can just to dream,becouse dreaming is cheap & for free"!!! :-) !!!

No, it doesn't. Find a photo of a UPS DC-10 anywhere on the internet - please. UPS has never had any DC-10's in their fleet, only MD-11's, and you have never seen a UPS DC-10 - let alone a UPS DC-10 that actually said that on the side of the fuselage. Thanks for playing.

Frankie Sweet! Thats cool. Planes can be very similar to each other which confuses people. It sure did to me when I first got into the hobby.

+Central Texas Rail/Jet Productions The MD-10s were originally DC10s but now have upgraded flight decks and other other improvements, so technically they are still DC10s.

I think he would say the last DC-10 10 not the last DC-10 at all (you are rright a lot of DC-10 30 are still flying with Fed-ex and UPS)

Edouard Martin FedEx still has 27, DC-10-10's and 17, DC-10-30's flying. FedEx is supposed to fly them till 2020. I don't know where this guy got that this was the last DC-10-10. Go to FedEx Express website and it shows all of their fleet of DC-10's. I just checked FlightRadar24 and it shows four FedEx DC-10-10's flying over the US as we speak.

Do the water tanker's 910/911 still count as DC-10-10?'s they are Based at Victorville Airport. I have seen them.They said they are DC-10's.

The last DC-10? That's a laugh. This plane is probably flying for FedEx now. Along with all the other coverted DC-10 aircrafts.

Thought the same. Wondered if the pilot might've noticed halfway down the runway? Didn't seem like that strong of a headwind.

No, FedEx only uses MD-10's and/or DC-10-30F's, this is a 10F series BID difference. No carrier in the US use the DC-10-10/F series anymore. The DC-10-10F in this video is an ORIGINAL DC-10-10F with the old steam gauges, 3 man Pilot config, and etc.
