I love both Peterson and Savinelli. I’m just careful as to the models that I buy. When you compared the stems on your first two, you were comparing an Army mount with a Spigot Mount. The army mount has to be thicker to work. The silver spigot has a metal to metal connection. Spigot pipes always have a narrower connection than the other models. They are supported by metal. I totally love my Savinelli’s. I pretty much only buy the 673 - KS or the 320 - KS models. I buy pipes based on their wall thickness. The Peterson’s that I buy are 302s, XL - 02’s. They all have robust bowls. I do not have old and new Peterson’s of the same model so I can’t speak to my experience about that. Yours were definitely getting smaller. I wouldn’t have purchased the 87 because even the old one has a thin bowl. God bless you, my friend. You are making great impact on the Internet.

I much prefer a large capacity bowl with stout walls. So glad to hear you mention Richard at The Gatlinburlier. I just met him last week and picked up an Aldo Velani bulldog. He is such a gracious man. He insisted I fill my new pipe with whatever I wanted from his jars and sent me out with the pipe in a velvet bag along with a little case for a half dozen or so pipe cleaners and a tamping tool. Wonderful experience!

I sold most of my collection in the recent years, Moonshine, Briarworks, Chacom, Peterson and now have almost only Savinelli 320s. I have 1 Peterson, 1 nording, 1 meer, 1 Vauen. 320s are just the perfect pipe for me. I smoke outside only, they are great hand warmers, thick walls, wide bowl for flavor, if i need a shorter smoke i dont fill it fully and thats it. I have 6 of em and more coming.

When I first started about 7 or 8 years ago, I looked for pipe and tobacco advice (and good conversation) from youtube and discovered two of the finest men, Muttnchop Piper and Matches860, who introduced me to Savinelli. I became addicted to those sandblasted Autographs, 5 or 6 in the collection now. They are indeed an outstanding pipe. I also picked up a Boswell or two based on your recommendations. Almost 7:30 est, might head over to Boswell and take a peek Lol. I really enjoy your channel.

Fairly new to pipe smoking here. I got the 2022 Savinelli St Nicholas straight billiard for my first briar, and whilst it's walls aren't particularly thick, the finish is lovely. Then I wanted to pick up some Petersons but also trying to save a little money, so I picked up a couple of estate kapets from eBay, and they are amazing. I can't place the exact era but they are pretty old, and the quality is amazing. There's probably a shrinkflation aspect to this, same as everything else these days, although I couldn't explain how that would work with pipe manufacturing.

+1 for vintage Pete's! Ive noticed that QC on stamping and hallmarks recently as well - even on the high grade / Newgrange Spigot line. I believe the Pete Christmas is a Military Mount rather than a Spigot- though the second Pete you showed was a Spigot. Military mounts lack the metal fitment on the stem. Appreciate the content and candor, Doctor H!

Great discussion and view of two large makers of pipes. I have to agree some, not all, of the newer Peterson's are too thin and small compared to their original desing. I have an Peterson Estate Pipe that is longer and heavier than it's current pipe. I recently got a Killarney XL90 that is meatier and closer to the original size, There are a number of nice factory pipes out there including Rattray's, White Elephant, and Chacom, that are good for beginners as well. I have a few Boswell's myself and they are superb. All the best to your and your family. Happy New Year.

Sooo. One of my pipes is that specific red Peterson with the Dracula finish. And This is the one I smoke the most right now. It's light, compact and the cup is smaller, which serves my purpose, as I'm on the road or on my way a lot, while also very much time limited. For me this pipe works the best. I agree on the part that the cup gets too warm sometimes, but it is still very comfortable to use vs Nording, for example.

I started one year ago and bought 22 briar pipes to date. But of the Peterson and Savinelli pipes I collected, when I receive them and I compare those two, I see: minor defects, crooked mouthpieces and one collapsed mouthpiece (a pipe cleaner couldn't go through), and I am seeing just a poorer quality of pipe with the Peterson pipes. I've even returned three of them. Now...I did buy two Peterson pipes in the mid 90's, when I briefly tried smoking pipes, and those were very nice. I wish I still had those two.

@@whylikedatone I did return three, but I still have two other Peterson pipes with tight airways in the mouthpiece (almost impossible to pass a cleaner through)...and another with a slightly crooked/off-axis mouthpiece. I might live about 45 minutes away from Washington, Missouri, but I promise you I am not biased in what I’m about to say. I think if you’re gonna go with the factory pipe, the best one is one of the $20 and up pipes you get from Missouri meerschaum. at that level, you get a cob with some contrast staining usually and significantly better stem. And they're lightweight and they always smoke well.

I have both Peterson and Savinelli pipes and enjoy both. I’ve had most of the Petersons for a few years or they were old stock when I bought them, so don’t know much about the new ones. All the Savs are nice and chunky. I don’t buy many pipes anymore as I have more than I ever need and am trying to cellar more tobaccy now. I now try and look more at artisan pipes that fit my style and are one-offs. They mean much more to me that way. They are slowly replacing most of my factory pipes in the rotation. That said, one of my favorites is an old GMB Rhodesian from the 1960s that I restored. It’s my go to when I’m out in the woods.

I suppose you could apply that comparison to most things today. The fact of the matter is, company's want maximum profit for minimum outlay, which only results in an inferior product. If you can still get that old school quality for not a lot of extra Money then you are onto a winner and a company like that deserves to succeed.

I went to a pipe show recently fully intending to walk out of there with my very first Peterson. I ended up coming home with a Savinelli 673. Unfortunately none of the Petersons quite did the trick for me. All of them seemed too puny except for the Deerstalker which was a bit too big for my tastes. I generally don’t prefer larger bowled pipes, but there’s something to be said about a pipe feeling robust or not, regardless of the depth of the bowl. In that regard Savinelli seems to take the cake.

Alan, quick comment is that you are comparing apples and oranges. Long comment is your Savinelli is a 673KS, the KS meaning "King Sized," and it's a Rhodesian. You're comparing it to a Peterson 87, which is a Straight Apple. Of course the Savinelli is gonna be bigger and more stout, especially because it's a KS. If you compare the Savinelli 673KS to the Peterson Rhodesian, which is the Peterson 999 you'll find the Peterson is a bit longer, 9mm to be exact, the Peterson actually weights 5 grams more. The bowl height is exactly the same. Yes the Savinelli outer wall is 6mm wider and the bowl is 4mm deeper, but the bowl diameter is 2mm smaller. And yes, the walls on the Peterson are a bit thinner than the walls of the Savinelli, but that's because the Sav is a King Size and the Peterson isn't. And then you go on to compare the Petersons to the Savinelli Autograph! Of course your average person would prefer a Sav Autograph to a Peterson Classic Range, as you said, the Sav Autograph is three times the price! But if you ask some if they'd prefer three Peterson Classics or one Savinelli Autograph, I bet you'd get a fair amount of folks wanting three pipes instead of one. Anyways, I've rambled. I usually enjoy your content, but found this one to be a bit disappointing. It's like you're saying, I think Chevy trucks are much better and higher quality than Ford trucks and then comparing a Silverado to a Maverick.

Started pipes about a month ago. A corncob was first and I will probably like them for a long time. Then I got a Savinelli Pulcinella and a Vauen Azzurro after a few gigs (and a raise at work). I have a Morgan Bones and a Stanwell P&C 25th anniversary bent egg on the way. For me at the moment, looks of the pipe (shape and color) are most important, and so those two brands have captured my attention the most at the moment. Petersons look classic (and I like that), but maybe they seem a bit boring to me compared to the others.

I had a Peterson gifted to me with a military bit that did not fit into the shank. I still haven't smoked it. I bought a decent Rossi bent apple and it is hands down my favorite.

I've not had good experiences buying new production Peterson's. I've bought 2, and both of them had quality issues. (I have a old estate Peterson, which seems to be a much higher quality pipe.) I have been much happier with the new Savinelli's that I have bought. One had an odd burn out issue that started in under two smokes, but it was replaced. I've bought many more Savinelli's than Peterson's.

I've been burned a couple of times with buying Peterson pipes online. The Dracula series like you have is one of them. The briar is of the same quality as a $50 basket pipe. I do have some good Petersons that I have bought over the last 2-3 years but they are ones that I bought from a brick and mortar where I could touch it with my own hands.

Well…..I think you hit it on the head. I have several new pipes……both 673ks’s. One in the St Nicholas and the other in the Tortuga as you showed in this video. I also have a new B10 Peterson just arrived and the Drac in an 01. I do see the differences between each manufacturer. I love my Petersons. My 87 is perfect….buts it’s old and I restored it lol. I buy estate Petersons usually. Like all things today it seems…..manufacturing cost is the concern for all things manufactured. I’m history minded as I think most pipe smokers are so I will naturally gravitate to the old proven items. What did Tolkien or CS Lewis smoke? That’s what I want…..Heck….my favorite watch is even mechanical from Hamilton. I would rather restore or reburbish an old, used item made with quality and care than buy a new, “cheaper to make” item….pipes included. Now of course this doesn’t included artisans…..but until I’m buying $300+ artisan pipes…..it’s old stock for me:):) Thanks for the video kind sir!

I would like to know who makes the bowls for them, I think the information is out there, and I also think their quality control has suffered severely in the last 10 years. I’ve just never really wanted to hold their hand. I’ve tried everything from system to tankards I think they are assembled in Ireland, but I don’t think they’re actually manufactured there but then again I don’t know no one seems to know who does the same for Dunhill but it sure as hell ain’t Dunhill anymore and yet people are still paying $700 for these pipes I do believe the water supply in this country has been spiked with LSD

I have been collecting since 1988, with well over 200 pipes now. Roughly 40% are Peterson, 20% Savinelli - spanning production from the 1950’s until now. What you say about the brands, I find to be largely true. I am drawn to the historic aspects of Peterson with a soft spot for the Mark Twain series.

I don't have a Peterson, but the one Savinelli I own has been a little disappointing. The dye immediately left It's mark on my hand, and the stem was almost too loosely fitted to take my hand off the bowl. I was able to improve the stem by swabbing a little water in the stem port a few times. Not nice and snug, but better. My favorite is one my wife bought me for Father's Day from The Catholic Pipe Company, one of the Common Sense Crusade pipes made for Father Calvin Robinson. It's beautiful, and I love smoking it.

Love Peterson tobacco, but I have to say it is much better in another pipe. I just don't like the P-lip or system pipes. Of the several pipes I use regularly, I only ever have moisture issues in the Peterson pipes. The only pipe I ever had crack was a Peterson.

100% agree more briar is going to result in better insulation an a cooler smoke. The 673 is a great bargin in comparison to the 'Dracula' line. You get a Balsa filtered experience and award winning dapper design. The Peterson Plip System pipes and Sherlock Holmes Lestrade, Strand, House/Pub and Bent Apples really do shine for the money and would rank them better than the 673. There are a couple Savenelli Long Pipes that I wouldn't recommend to anyone for any reason as they do not provide the briar to buck ratio I would want and smoke hotter than hades.

Great video! I prefer the variety offered by Savinelli myself. Do you have any advice for keeping pipes clean and odor-free for those of us who have people who don't like the burnt smell?

Savinelli is more of a clean pipe. Pristine. More elegant shapes due to Italian influence. Even the Rossi line is fantastic. Better acrylic as well.

I have 3 Savinelli's in my collection. I bought 1 Peterson christmas a couple of years ago. The fit and finnish is so poor that I've never used it. I probably should have sent it back, but I'm the kind of guy who just won't buy another.

I like both, but Savinelli seems to build a more stout one. Honestly though, I like my Missouri cobs best… and they are fun to customize!

My experience is quite opposite, the one Peterson pipe I have is much thicker than the 2 savinellis I own (and I would do anything to get my hands on one of those 87 draculas!!!)

Agree on the Peterson. They factory pipe bowls seems thin. Also the quality doesn’t seem the same as Savinelli. And I do love the Peterson designs and own about 10.
