Was it just the dualism between the sinister text and the perceived "love song ballade" atmosphere? Because, IMHO we can't simply ascribe it to the fact that many don't speak/understand english or they are not listening to the words. Anyway, this part is pasted from Songfacts: "In a 1983 interview with the New Musical Express, Sting explained: "I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership." Regarding the common misinterpretation of the song, he added: "I think the ambiguity is intrinsic in the song however you treat it because the words are so sadistic. I think it is awesome to have a song about a pissed of rejected partner. I'm sure we can all think of other songs that have this same sentiment. We all go to dark places at times in our lives. Sometimes very dark, very angry. This song captures so many dark emotions. That's what makes it great.

Not gonna lie, the lyrics hit me personally. I was like this with my newborn. I watched her like a hawk because I never took care of a baby before and I honestly didn’t know what to do.
