I am a scout master for a boy scout troop in Southeast Ohio and I carry the same knife and that is all I carry and need. I love it.

I have made several bottle kits over the years. one thing about yours I really like is unlike a LOT of others, you didn't pack the bottle full of stuff, you actually carry water. I have been saying exactly that for decades, and it drives me nuts when someone puts all their stuff inside the bottle. I really like the 40 oz Kleen Kanteen for these kits, the bottles tend to have molle that allows for the addition of a first aid pouch, and adding more cordage, and a small fixed blade to the bag it's self. I also have a nesting stove for the round bottles, so the same things you mention apply. I really do reccomend to everyone who I talk to about these to use a stainless bottle in stead of a Nalgene. I do have, and really like that Rangergrip 78. it is a very solid tool set for emergencies. I never leave the house with out my 2 Leatherman tools on my belt, and at least a folder. if I am going to the woods, I will have a decent fixed blade on my belt as well, but the 78 has a much better saw, and it is never bad to have a back up blade. another nice thing about the 40 oz bottle bags is you can nest a second cup on top of the bottle, giving you a cup for food, and one for liquids at the same time. or if you have someone with you who does not have their own cup.

Well thought out kit. That Rangergrip is the perfect SAK for bushcraft. I keep one in all my bags and one on me at all times

Excellent kit love the zip ties on the bic lighter, I was using rubber bands but as they get old they break great idea that I hadn’t seen before!

Great kit. If you can find a way to add a poncho, large trash bag, or mylar blanket then you'd have a shelter element as well. Thank you for sharing.

He had plenty of room for a mylar blanket. Instead of that 550 cord he could have used some Microline it holds up to 100 lb it would easily fit 30 or more feet of it in the bottom in the same space. Only problem is once you use you're mylar blanket you never get it back in the same shape or size. It's good to have some duct tape with you too you can make little duct tape projections on the outside to put your tie offs on it works better than a rock and trying to tie a loop around it. I still have one of those things I used once it was small enough you could just about carry it in your shirt pocket without even knowing it was in there until I used it. Now it just about fills up a fanny pack. Even when you get it smaller it always works loose and expands

A nice kit indeed. 👍🏼👍🏼 Back in the early 2000’s, when my boys were still in high school, we would go on “survival kit campouts”. We would assemble a minimum kit (usually around a knife, but sometimes around a canteen) and go for one or two nights in the Shining Rock Wilderness of North Carolina. The two nighters really made you think about what was important.

Now that is one sweet brew kit. I've been carrying a ranger grip in my pocket for about 7 yrs & love it my favorite bushcrafty tool. Cheers 🇨🇦

Something to consider when using a tin is time and uses, that lid and lip are going to pick up deformities. Also its not intended to be water tight to begin with in the event of a water crossing. I run 2 ranger bands on my tins. One like you have there, but i also run one around the seam of the lid to put a pressure sealed barrier on both sides of that seam.

I'm not a big fan of those tin survival kits. But I do really appreciate the fact that you actually did something after showing it. So many KZbinrs will just show what they have and never use any of it. You actually made a fire and cooked you a cup of coffee with it you get massive points for that the only thing you were missing what is a pair of hot lips. To put on your drinking cup to keep from burning your lips it's only about two bucks and it's a game changer when drinking hot coffee out of a titanium mug. You have plenty of room for it. I appreciate your canteen set I have two just like it from Keith although I don't have the fancy bag like what you have . There are little tricks to get most of that on the original bag it came with. Back when I bought it they weren't making those specialty bags. Also the price has gone down. Mine were like $180 a piece they're down to about 150 now. Definitely worth having. That way I can carry one and my daughter can carry one. I sure don't need to be carrying around both complete setups although it still weighs less than a stainless steel without the stove or the cup. My second canteen can be a plastic one. Because I always carry two out. I have a plastic military type but my lid has a water filter on it a kind that will filter out everything supposedly including pesticides, chemicals and viruses. Not too shabby. I don't think most people would have poured out their water to put the fire out. You just had a cup of coffee, off camera you could have made your own water to kill the fire. I'm pretty sure some of the new guys out there will actually try to use their canteens and waste whatever water they have trying to put it out for real. When all you have to do is step on it and get it to where you think it's out and then you pour water on it. I also really liked what you did with your lighter. Very smart. I don't believe you'll ever be making Char material in your little tin can, for the simple reason you don't have a flint and steel in your kit. It would be a logical to assume you were carrying one somewhere else as it would be just as easy to carry your lighter or feral Rod somewhere else as well. Oh I get that you can pick up a piece of quartz or flint and use the back of a knife. I just don't think it's very practical and you seem to really have your various fire making methods available. Flint and steel is more for reenactments. And people trying to show off. Only a complete fool would try to rely on something like that when you have other Fire Starting methods available that are quick and easy and they sure thing every time. If you're going to be in the woods long enough to wear your feral Rod out you have some end of the world problems going on. And yeah I get you could lose it. And that's why you have other backups . Most people know you can't rely on the magnifying glass trick. It only works on good days and during the daytime of course they're still good to have. Especially if you wear glasses and you lose your glasses and need to see something. I wouldn't mind getting a canteen bag upgrade. I still have a knife attached to mine a feral rod and a bunch of other stuff but yours looks way better

I much prefer that stove stand over the other type with a grill top like the one the Pathfinder sells. I bought one a little over a year ago. You can friction attach it to the bottom of the canteen cup making it easy to transfer on and off the fire instead of balancing it and possibly tipping it over.A lot of very useful items in this kit. Many items you see in the usual Altoids tin kit are just not useful. Your kit has very practical and useful items that are geared towards the 10 Cs.

Yes, but you also noticed that Dave does his fires a lot differently. He doesn't try to build his fires inside of the closed stove. He makes a regular fire and sets that thing down on top of the coals and stuff. And has the burning stuff on the outside. Sometimes he'll use a stick to push some of the coals into the bottom part. This guy was relying on actual fire from inside the burner itself. Which would need more ventilation. You friction attach your cup to it and the flame would be forced to come out the lower are holes and then there would be not very much oxygen coming in. For what he was doing he did it the only way it could really be done good which is good to know because you might not want to wait for the fire to burn down into coals.

you might wanna take a look at the Mother canteen carrier from centerline systems they make a FANTASTIC product in an outstanding quality. also love the victorinox but i do wish they would do something about that fingernail destroying way of opening it.

I've had a centerline systems one and they are nice but it a tight fit. I got rid of it. When I started this build I was looking for a more economical alternative with more space.

Great little kit, thanks! Since you don't have much room for food, it would be great if you added some Nutrient Survival vitamin coffee, liquid nutrient, and/or brain shakes for added energy and focus. 😉

These small kits are nice for a day trip but I'm not sure I would call it a survival kit in the true sense of survival in a desperate situation. Handy items to have but I wouldn't stake my life on them and there are many super foods in powder form or capsules available now that I would carry as they provided you with the nutrients your body needs which would be more in line with the term survival, bouillon cubes for salt yes but skip the coffee as it dehydrates you.
