It is nice that various state Governments are honoring and providing cash awards to those who have won medals in Tokyo Olympics. But at the same time we should not ignore those who have performed beyond expectation but could not win the medal. In this category I would like to mention the performance of our relay team (4x400m). They did a wonderful job by setting a new Asian record but could not make it to finals. The Central and State Governments should take the notice of their performance and should also award and honour them.

A point to note: The track in Tokyo Olympics is made of two layers of “continuous, seamless material” : a vulcanised rubber top and a lower layer with air filled cavities that help with shock absorption. There are also rubberised granules embedded in the top layer of the track to improve elasticity i.e. to make the track springier. There is a debate going on regarding this aspect being the cause for fast times at the Olympics. Request Print to cover this aspect in the next CTC on athletics & records broken by track & field athletes.

Because yesterday immediately after Neeraj Chopra's achievement there was a whatsapp post doing the rounds about how he was taken up by the army and coached and trained. I confirmed the same from an army friend of mine who told me about such a sports institute of the army in Pune and several other places in the country

Correction: Neeraj's coach is Dr. Klaus Bartonietz, not Uwe Hohn. He trained with Uwe for only 6 months back in 2018. Uwe has been working with Shivpal Singh and Annu Rani who performed below par and hence AFI sacked him.

Hi Shekar, once again and entertaining and informative presentation. If you continue like this I will have to spend a lot of my time responding and praising you. Kudos to those who helped you to gather so much information. I am surprised non of the Indian channels highlighted the feats of the relay team. Thank you for passing such treasure of information.

Sir, For me closest moment before Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal in olympics was PT Usha’s 400 meters hurdles in 1984 4th position. Please don’t forget her from this list. It was one of turning point in women’s athletic in India.

To me Milkha Singh Ji was a legend ...to win 77 races out of 80 in that period when the europeans and american had better facilities, coaching, support staff and nutrition ...and for an Indian to race with the world's top 6 athletes in the finals on foreign soil without Indian supporters in the stands and be regarded as a genuine favourite is no small feat👏👏👏👏👏

Great performance from Neeraj!! All Indians are proud. Though this is not Indian's first medal in athletics, that honour belongs to Norman Pritchard: an Anglo Indian who got 2 silvers in 1900

Only Uwe Hohn ever threw a javelin beyond 100 m and that too only once...it was never a frequent occurence to have javelin travelling beyond 100 meters...and the change in design of the javelin was proposed even before Hohn's eternal record throw...that record merely accelerated the process of design change

Definitely, the men's javelin throw is one of the most elite events in the Olympics, even back in the days of Greece. It is a big achievement for India. But can this success be replicated?

Growing up in the 70s, sports participation was high and annual events were happening all around Maharahstra albeit without much coaching and training support. Subsequent decades have seen a steady decline with low levels of paricipation and fewer opportunities. I sincerely hope, the state govts use this momemtum to provide facilities and resources to encourage people of all age groups to play sports that will not only generate great athletes but also make India a healthy nation.
