Still wondering how this is a punishment for ruining a whole state. The seva as a Sikh is a duty, can't be punishment. As a kid, and even now when I go home, I listen to kirtan for more than 1 hour daily when my parents hear it. Didn't know it could be punishment. Finally, the idea of toilet cleaning as a punishment clearly has casteist origins. Moroever, I can't believe that for all the things Maharaja Ranjit Singh did, marrying Muslim woman was the reason for punishment, keeping in mind the companion of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a Muslim by birth too. I am sure I am getting many abrasive responses to even put some counter to Akal Takht, but some things definitely need to be said. To me, this "punishment" is all a sham to somehow revive SAD, with Badals now operating the same way as before, just behind the scenes.

I think you needs to do a bit more research. Ram Rahim sent a letter which wasn’t an apology but a clarification. That letter was edited with Badal’s influence and word “apology” was added. Ram Rahim straightaway refused that he apologised to Akal Takhat. Secondly, Ram Rahim introduced term “insaan” and asked his followers to use it as a surname. It was announced on the day he dressed up like Guru Gobind Singh ji. This incident provoked Sikhs. But you are saying that Ram Rahim called himself an insaan to clarify to Akal takhat that he didn’t try to copy Guru Gobind Singh ji. Come on. Can’t believe that such a celebrated journalist is spreading false news. It is the problem with national media, they think that they know everything but their research about regional issues is half cooked.

The problem of Sikhism since the early 80s is : the Akal Takht has been held hostage to increasingly disorienting concentric narratives spun around : Miri, Piri, and Nashedi. From tolerating ( or turning a blind eye to ) co-operation of Khalistanis with Pakistan to redirect the epicentre of narcotics trade towards North India, to meekly capitulating in the face of pressure from influential farmers to lay siege to Delhi .. the corruption through "nasha" has become synonymous with the nasha of corruption. 4 decades of Badals and other elite groups shoving pious, ordinary Sikhs into a maelstrom of bad money, worse crimes and inducements to addiction ( the very worst ) have happened under the lazy eye of the Akal Takht. Time will not be kind to the Akal Takht and it's practice of doling out indulgences. The power centre remains unchanged because the youth are being driven away, one suspects, by the machinations of the very people in power. And all they get by way of punishment for their crimes against their qaum is .. cleaning of latrines ( that too, a suspended sentence ? ). Kaisi teri khudgarzi, kaisa tera pyaar ? Where's the justice, yaar ?

Remember, although Court dropped the murder charges, like Shekhar Gupta likes to whitewash the crimes, Jagir Kaur was convicted of forcing her daughter to abort her child and keeping her in illegal confinement!! And she used to head the SGPC at some point! These are the power heads of Sikhism now. Her whole team including the driver, SubInspector Personnel Guard all were convicted and only crime they couldn't prove was the murder because the body was cremated and ashes disappeared for any forensics to be conducted! Fake evangelist churches are rapidly converting low caste sikhs with lure of money and travel to US/UK/Canada. How is 2 days of seva a punishment? Even I do more than that at the local Gurudwara without any punishment. Local devotee women spend the whole day cooking langar. If I were alive during maharaja Ranjit Singh's time, irrespective of what happened, I would have still joined his army, and marched off in the direction our maharaja pointed us to. Akal Takhat sahib has this power to punish on the basis of religious misconduct . One who follows sikhism and is a sikh , accepts the punishment. It doesnot apply on non- sikhs. Listen it is very basic. Someone who follows sikhism and claims to be a sikh , must follow religious conduct. Something which may be crime in sikhism may not be crime in eyes of court , for example , cutting hairs . If a amritdhari sikhs cut his hairs , he has done a mistake , and according to gurus he must apologize for it and get the punishment. Now court doesn't see as a crime , but religion does. Now if that person regrets cutting his hairs and wants to apologize and get Amrit again , he will come to akal takhat sahib and they will announce his punishment. Punishment varies from mistakes to crime. Like skipping doing prayer is a mistake and akal takhat may announce him to do 10 more prayers ..So that's important in sikhism to maintain the conduct.. Akal takhat Sahib holds power on sikhs , not on any one else The concept the power of Akal takhat Sahib is very important and of great respect. Even Maharaja Ranjit SIngh ji accepted the punishment because he may be the king but at the same time he is sikh and doing something against religious conduct is punishable for him as he is sikh. It is humbleness and respect to our faith. Religions are based one faith brother. Like for example Beef . Eating beef is a crime in hinduism and even sikhs don't eat beef. Because that's our faith right? But maybe for muslims eating beef is all okay .. It's crime for them to eat pork.. It's all about faith. Courts cannot decide on it and in law it's not punishable to eat beef , but may be as hindu it may be crime for you to do that ... Such things are called religious misconduct. In sikhism , Akal takhat sahib deals with such issues. I'll be pleased to dicuss your doubts , you can ask.

So akal takhat sahib has power to punish any sikh if he is doing something against religious conduct. It is only for sikhs , and sikhs follow akal takhat sahib's orders. It's religious concept .. You need to explore sikhism for better understanding ... and yes court in india cannot punish anyone for religious misconduct but in sikhism Akal takht sahib has this authority. The issue is that a lot of people do “bhed chal”. If somebody told them the Akal Takht has the full Miri and Piri powers of the Guru, they say “yeah I already know that”. I am not saying that the Akal Takht should not be respected because that is our Maryada and for the Jathedar holds some spiritual authority for sure, but what I am saying is that the authority of a Jathedar is nowhere near the same zone as the Guru. A Jathedar is just an ordinary person who in a good case may be endowed with some spiritual knowledge. In itihaas this has been shown to be true - we have had many very very bad Jathedars of various Takhts as well as good ones. Nobody, absolutely nobody ever in history had the authority of the Guru. When Ranjit Singh bowed before the Akal Takht, it was for a religious reason alone (read about these incidents if you don’t know the details) not because the Jathedar disagreed with his policies. Ranjit Singh was sovereign in matters of worldly policy such as which lands to conquer, who to appoint where, what taxes to levy etc. Additionally, I am saying that the concept of the full powers of the Miri and Piri literally belonged to the Guru alone because the Guru reflected the Noor of God himself. Today in a democracy the Jathedars of the Akal Takht have some of the power of the Piri and perhaps it is time for the Quam to agree that the power of Miri power belongs to the CM of Punjab and the PM of India because that is who was elected in a fair process. Ranjit Singh won his territory through the sword and they have done so through the ballot. That was the way of that age and this is the way of this age and perhaps superior. But that is where Miri belongs after the last Guru. You may have a slight difference on the latter part of my assertion, but as a Sikh how can you even dispute something so fundamental as Guru Maniyo Granth and not creating new Gurus by proxy? How can you even compare that authority of the Guru and the authority of a human Jathedar.

22.34 Akali Dal is the political expression of Sikhism in Punjab. If the Akali Dal is going down, it means Sikhism is going down. It surprises me that it was the Congress that created mess in Punjab. Zail Singh as CM under Indira Gandhi as PM propped up Brindranwale to have control on Akhal Takht, the spiritual seat. Come 1979, for strange reasons as Congress was not in power then, Khalistan getting propped up. Openly Brindranwale did not support Khalistan movement. Then came 1982 when the Golden Temple were occupied by Brindranwale group with arms and ammunition, Indira Gandhi then PM ordered army action which lead to serious desecration of Golden Temple. This lead assas8lination of Indira Gandhi and massive killing of Sikhs that followed, eading to many Sikhs settling in Canada, UK and USA. Post year 1991 many things were under control, until recently Punjab as a state is going through different challenges.

The SGPC was set-up to maintain the Gurudwaras and preach the religion hence they've got to maintain the purity of the faith. For them to deviate from the tenants of the faith becomes hard.
