As an Indian, I have noticed some issues faced by the foreigners coming to India. 1) The biggest issue is that many places are still very dirty, overcrowded, chaotic. Even the Indians can't handle it sometimes, so imagine how difficult it is for foreigners. And as Indians, if you say that you are used to living with garbage and chaos, then that's quite sad. It shows that our people have just accepted these poor standards. 2) I have noticed the Chapri culture rising in past few years. I was so shocked when I saw foreigners' vlogs in which some local Chapris were following foreigners and harassing them, also asking them to take pictures with them. It's so disgusting and embarrassing. 3) Various sellers, taxi drivers, auto wallas etc try to overcharge foreigners, thinking that It's easy to scam them. 4) You know very well about the issue of women's safety. As an Indian female, I would never consider travelling alone in India.

I have been to India many times attending exhibitions in New Delhi Pragati Madan Exhibitions Centre. Also to Bangalore Airshows 2 times. But thank God I don't have to go anymore as I am not in charge of the exhibition now. 1st, this country is dirty almost everywhere. I still remember the first time I was there and I have had very bad food poisoning. 2nd, you just cannot enjoy freely in this country. Everywhere we go there are always beggars following you and many of them are kid beggars as young as 10 years old and look so pitiful. 3rd, touting people following you and pestering you to go shopping with them so he can get commissions and scam you. 4th, take a taxi for foreigners it is common they over charge you many times more than the locals. Or if we pay them they always say they don't have change. And refuse to give the change. So you have to make sure you carry a small denomination rupees to pay for the actual fare. 5th, finding a reasonably clean public toilet is almost impossible. You always have to make sure you do it in the hotel before going out. 6th, the people's civil manners are very uncivilized and uncultured. Don't know how to queue up for anything. Many times I have had the locals just cut into the queue in front of me. Once I was making an order in KFC, a guy just cut in front of me while I was still making my order. I told him I haven't finished making my order and he is not happy and turn violence and wanted to fight with me. Even the KFC staff can't do anything. Later I found out that because the staff is worried as people behave this mostly from the upper castes community so the staff is worried to offend them. 7th, the air is always very pulluted. 8th, traffic is like totally no system at all and very dangerous to cross the roads. And horning is as if they are enjoying nice music. They just keep horning not knowing if it is necessary. I can mention a lot more but these are enough to tell what I have experienced in this country. This is one country that I will never go to again even if they paid for all my travel expenses.

If you were a member of the middle/upper class before 1991, you will have seen a decline in the quality of life. Of course there has been technological improvement but the complete lack of town planning and sensible regulation means that our cities are much more polluted and much more crowded. Before 1991, a member of the middle class was a relatively rich person in a very poor country with all associated privileges. The unwashed masses are much more in your face today. Compare the average journey in railways second class today with 30 or 40 years ago - much less civility, much more boorish behaviour. The true test of a society is not building beautiful things but maintaining them properly - that requires systems and that requires competent people at all levels, not just an elite that’s able to build something beautiful. Our lack of attention to good primary education and health in the early days has had terrible consequences. Kerala may be an industrial wasteland, but as the average Keralite behaves better than the average Delhite the average tourist will have a better experience there than in Delhi. On top of everything, we have crazy animal lovers who think it is perfectly acceptable for monkeys, dogs, horses, cows, buffaloes to be roaming the roads. The owners of stray cattle face no consequences - such animals would be put down in any sensible country.

Problem is Indians don't care about India. They like to say they do but it's all for show. Which reflects in it's politicians and then in policies. Statement of the CM is just an example of that. Domestic tourism is there because Goa was a good destination for foreign tourist for long time and had infrastructure to support it. Once that goes down investment in tourism will go down and with domestic tourists. This careless attitude of 'who cares' is not good for economy. We have poisonous air, water and garbage filled lands it was already a miracle that tourists were visiting us.

You are missing the whole point here. Its not the government, its the people. People harass the crap out of tourists. And there is so much filth everywhere and fraudsters everywhere - an artifact of population density and our heterogeneous demography. We must NOT try to bring tourists here, its not our forte. Just let it be and concentrate on what you're good at - offshoring services and hopefully manufacturing. If you want to do tourism then the only way is guided, curated tours of our ancient architectural wonders where the tourist does not have to deal with the common indian - the kind that saya taxis ma'am, hotels ma'am, selfie ma'am and harasses the shit out of every tourist
@chokaling18 күн бұрын
I disagree. Pollution, non-existent sidewalks, traffic regulation (horns, congestion contro, etc), urban planning, corruption (including taxi mafia etc), tax structure, maintenance of tourist destinations, quality of tap/drinking water, etc are huge reasons for the problem. And these are all in the government's hands. At least in the south of India, the people are actually great. They generally leave foreigers, women, etc alone.

I have traveled quite a bit this year from the Grand Kenyon to Rockies, Uttarakhand,Runnotsav, Thailand, Vietnam. Indian are not realizing the damage that oligarchy is doing to India and Indians cost of living. As The cost of infrastructure is gets high every thing becomes expensive. Salaries of Indian workers at airports are lower than European workers , then why are airports charging more? Why are Toll roads and bridges crossing more expensive in India? ( check prices for Air travel on google flights, from any European countries to another, compare prices for any flight in India for a similar distance, you will find we pay much higher prices, It’s the Adani effect) .
@vabhdmanАй бұрын
Adani doesn't own all the airports bhai. The only thing that's cheaper in India is the human capital. So anything that's based on service will be super cheap. Think hair cutting, plumbers, etc. Also a lot of IP based things are cheaper in India, because in these kinds of business selling a new version of software or a movie doesn't come at too much high cost, so that's why Netflix is cheaper in India. Books are launched in India at a much cheaper price. Air travel has most of its cost on Purchasing aircraft and oil. Crew form a small part of the salary. And those two things are the same in Europe and India. Actually oil is more expensive here since we have high taxes. You can checkout most Airline profits and you will find they aren't really insanely profitable.

Mr Vir Sanghvi, this is a great point you have raised. The point is, the hospitality industry in India is not well developed. It is too expensive to stay in a reasonably clean, safe and comfortable hotel as compared to other Asian countries. The price the 4-star hotels, meant for the middle or upper middle classes, ask is well over other Asian countries. The outside of hotels, the infrastructure, the taxi Mafia which you mention, the garbage - among other things are a deterrent.

India's sales strategy needs to change. There's no point in selling all of India as a destination, because much of India, particularly the larger cities, are way too crowded, dirty and unsafe. India's tourism industry needs to pick a select few places, clean them up, and sell them as specific destinations rather than as part of India, somewhat like Indonesia markets Bali. They should pick places that are a little less populated and have plenty to offer. Some suggestions could be the Andamans, Lakshadweep, North East, Kashmir, Leh, Pondicherry, Simla, etc.
@krishanrathi911929 күн бұрын
In India, unchecked urban growth, poor regulation enforcement, and local governance issues degrade once peaceful towns. As more people flock to these places, the infrastructure fails to keep up, leading to chaos, pollution, and overcrowding. New places will eventually face the same fate-it's a cancer that replicates. The only solution is strong enforcement of standards, quality, and integrity, but the government has failed to act, greed is too hard to resist.

Well said when you mentioned that the locals' standard of living has gone up. However, the government and even the people don't truly believe in improving standards of living. So, I don't think it's going to change. People need to change their mentality, and they should also be sensitized towards foreigners. For example, people often take pictures with Western tourists, which I don't quite understand. Another example is foreigners being charged 500 while locals pay only 20 or 50, which doesn't make sense. When the government views foreigners as a source of revenue, we can't expect locals to think differently. By reducing ticket prices, sightseeing becomes more affordable. This is just one example. Also I was not allowed to be at place with my friends and had to stand outside and also some other queues as I was indian and there were western so. I dont know what to say

No interest in preserving and valorisation of Agra downtown (remains of city walls, havelis and old buildings, bringing controlled amenities without disturbing city's landscape and aesthetic, etc.). The project of a big and interesting museum in the city (for which central government must give some funds for acquisition policy) converted into a hall on the honour of a non-local and historically unrelated king, etc. India's current tourism policy is only focused on religious tourism, specifically targeting a few communities that aren't found worldwide (so domestic tourism is more awaited).

Though we might try to celebrate India becoming super power, economy boosting, India ruling, India shining and Globally people are respecting India now more than ever etc. etc., the fact remains that all this is just mere talk and nothing else, because India as of now seen from outside for a tourist looks more as a troubled country internally with unrest, hate, social media and political atmosphere and fanatism ruling the atmosphere which has changed the image of India as a very interesting, peaceful, diverse unified secular democratic country and its loving people and nothing special to offer. Above that people of India looks more frustrated and unhappy today while they have grown in money and development than before. The confidence in India while people say is grown, its not converting into reality, we are only finding, none of NRIs leaving foreign land and coming to India to settle. On the contrary, more of youngsters are going abroad to study, which clearly shows the education standard of India or the country not matching the expectations of youth and what the future is in store. Definitely, few entrepreneurs or Corporate World higher positions or celebrities are earning huge money, but a country becomes attractive only if the common people of the country are happy and enjoying.

The list goes on and on. I don't know what the government is thinking. It's sad. And the whole place is so dirty and no one has any civic sense.

Not just spitting but clean nostrils and throats urinate and even relieve themselves after pooing.

The perception of India being an unsafe destination for foreign tourists has always been an big hurdle for our tourism. Adding fuel to the fire is India's growing reputation as the online scam capital of the world, which is deterring people from coming here. We need to sensitize all stake holders in the tourism industry. We need to stop trying to wrangle money out of foreign tourists the minute we see them.

Few people from a particular region of India are scamming people online. Why generalise the whole country?

I live in Goa several months each year, have been for 20 years. It’s changed and not for the better overall but still love it there. It’s the Russians who buggered it up when they started coming. I’m off to Mysore for a weeks yoga school next week, can’t wait. I love it there also.

Travelled all over the world. Services in India are very bad, road safety an issue, hygiene, women safety, aggression, limited food options( people don’t want curries all the time), unkempt hotels, poor staff services, people always looking for money, baggers, cow dunk , street dogs, no places to walk - no foot paths, over priced handicrafts sold on retail

Local tourists do not pay in $ , so country won't earn $ which are needed for import funding. Rather Indian going out spend $ , which is worse.

everything said is absolutely spot on just came back from a 3 week trip of both north india and kerala with wife and kids completely convinced that nothing will change for the better in my current lifetime very exhausting trip, terrible crowding and pollution. I fail to understand why people would spend their hard earned money to visit India.

India has a lot of sites worth visiting. It needs to improve its infrastructure, security, and cleanliness.
