I have watched this argument come up every few years for the last fifty years. People are 'shocked' at conditions of live sheep exports. Government proposes reforms. Farmers say the reforms will destroy them. Problem drops off the news cycle for a few years while everyone hammers out the details. Repeat.

All the latest advertisements with smiling farmers saying that they are such wonderful people when the very animals they care for go off on a over crowded vessel to stand in extreme heat, in their own faeces and urine speaks volumes to me. If anyone has caught a peak hour train you know how uncomfortable that is NOW add heat and standing in your own excrement- do you understand how those poor sheep feel? Shame on our farmers.

Yes, it will ruin Aussie farmers, except only export-market mutton sheep farmers in WA (all others states have already banned it), and even then they are getting $100mn+ from the Government to help out.

They could have worked with farmers to save the trade by value adding & processing on shore, but they would rather just throw some change at them to walk away from their stations all together. This will get bad for these governments.

The industry has had many years to transition to onshore processing. Instead the industry decided to focus spending their money on government lobbying. Even now they are spending money on lobbying instead of stopping ALL lobbying and moving that money into onshore processing

We already export chilled meat to every Middle Eastern country we export live sheep to, except Israel. In fact, the chilled meat trade to the Middle East ALONE is worth eight times the value of the entire live sheep trade (chilled to Middle East = $632 million versus live sheep exports = $77 million).

We are civilised people not savages. Mr Albanese has made the right decision. Live export of animals is unnecessary as well as being a really abhorrent practice.

Yeah let's bring on only a lobbyist for "fair and balanced" coverage. This is more biased coverage than the treatment they give to the unions.
