@@jessejayne883 I live in the country and have a doggy door. My two cats come and go as they please along with my dogs. It's 24 degrees F and my cats go outside even when its flat out cold. I do believe a cat should have access to outdoors, they will be stronger and healthier. Maybe not as safe but cats are survivors and can deal with predatory animals, at least mine do fine.

I have 4 cats. We live in the country. One wants to be outside only, until it gets cold. One wants to go in/out/in/out several times daily. One is inside only ,and one is moody sometimes in sometimes out. We receive several "presents" daily on our porch. It's so funny how each has a different personality and preferences.

What about the risk of rabies? If they are outdoors, they could contract rabies at any time. Even if they don't, the people they encounter don't know, and might trap them and kill them. And what if the pet gets lost and don't come back?

Thank you - lots of points to consider. One point not mentioned specifically was injury due to conflicts with other cats; injuries include FIV (kitty HIV-Aids). Cats are also more likely to be targeted by very nasty people. The oldest pet cat was 38 years old.

@Anwar super channel and shorts I think that it at least partially depends on the particular cat. The friends that I mentioned now have a female cat who is much less territorial, and I do not recall her ever getting injured. It is not a male versus female cat problem, either. It is just the way that it worked out with the cats that my friends had.

My cat Is amazing. She can go outside. But she often chooses to be inside. She’s always inside at a certain time at night and she’s never let outside before 10 AM. She really enjoys her life this way. SHe always comes in when I call her. She’s never frustrated and she’s a perfect cat. SHe’s my first cat I ever owned and I think how I’m doing things is the perfect way to do them. She is never outside all the time. When I leave the house she’s inside. I have a giant house with toys, scratching post, litter boxes on every floor. My cat has the best life of both worlds. . Even though she’s my first cat she’s amazing. Everyone that meets her say, oh my God she’s amazing. She’s so friendly. Her fur is super shiny, she gets thumbs up, clean bill of health from the vet and is always praised. I am proud of her, we have routines, we play every night before bed. She eats all organic and is my best friend. Loving, owning, having a cat is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

I've had several cats over some 45 years. Since I live alone, for practical reasons, they have all had an indoor/outdoor life style. All have lived a very long life (17+), but one which expired from natural causes at age 11 years. I have an extra large suburban lot, which allows much shrubbery around the house and a separate area of "field" (uncut field grass and weeds), which is a mini-hunting and nesting ground. Now older than most cats, the current feline, when out, stays most of the time on or under a large deck three feet off the ground and semi-enclosed. She is very territorial, so does not allow other cats to share that space. Her food and water are in the house, accessible though a cat door at will. If she wants to socialize with me, she isn't shy about it, but spends much of her time in her own world. In winter when its cold and/or wet, she tends to move into the house for the season. Always has her litter box there. Maximum life options for the cat. Minimum upkeep for me.

thats exactly the way to do it (if one is able to ofc). ppl compare cats to dogs by saying "if you wouldnt let a dog outside unsupervised why let a cat out?" but theyre 2 entirely different animals with different needs & requirements. dogs are naturally pack oriented and dependent on us for companionship, reassurance, behaviour training etc. whereas cats thrive on independence & control, and are more comfortable coming to us on their own terms. theyre not as needy and are far more competent than dogs at managing on their own while outside. theyre not as quick to trust strangers & know to avoid certain dangers. not saying that dogs are stupid at this, i love them just as much as cats, but dogs can be easily tricked, especially if desperate and hungry, whereas cats are more hesitant to trust a situation theyre not familiar with. ive seen ppl arguing against letting cats outside and mentioning their "instincts" in quotation marks as if thats not a real argument for letting cats outside, but thats literally a biological fact? cats cant help their instinct to want to go outside. so yeah i get kind of tired with ppl like this, even tho i get why theyre saying it and there are possible dangers for cats, but there are possible dangers for nearly everything and if we all worried about it like that then no one would be able to do anything.

I just want to point for all the cat indoor people, the study about indoor vs outdoor cat that people constantly quote (the "outdoor cats only live 2-5 years" one) One, it came out in the 70ies and focused on one suburb of new york with high frequency of traffic and Two, about 80% of the cats they found dead due to external threats in said study were feral cats. Badically what I'm saying it that it shouldnt be taken as a template for the rest of the world

My mother lives in a village. Some neighbours were taking care of strays but not spaying them, so they multiplied into a sizeable cat colony. The village Council offered to find them homes as barn cats but were turned down. Last winter was a hard one and most of them died, not due to the cold, but because of local foxes and coyotes. Very sad. Luckily, my mother had trapped one mother and her 4 kittens. They're still doing well on the farm they were relocated to. Of course, they could be attacked there, too, but it's less likely.

Good informative video!! Can remember growing up in 1970s that we had 5 cats: 1 cat was strictly indoors but would let her out under strict supervision and by leaving the door open so she had a quick escape route whenevr she felt threatened: all the other cats were indoor/outdoor, and they would leave home for various lengths of time. 1 of the cats was gone for as long as 6-months and we wrote her off as either dead or being adopted by another family. Then one day, she just returned and would not leave the immediate area of the house for the rest of her life, though she would still go outside. Eventually it came down to the cat's decision whether they left the fenced-in yard that we had but they all seemed satisfied by just going out into that yard and exploring the older they got. Of course, cold-weather months you could not get them to go outside even if you paid them. MISS those cats!!!

I've had both. My most recent cats have both come from stray/feral situations and neither showed/has shown the slightest interest in going outside. Neither look/ed at an open door as an invitation. When growing up, I had an indoor/outdoor cat. He lived to 21 but he also ended up at the vet several times due to things that happened to him outside. He got hit by a car once and broke some bones. Luckily, he managed to drag himself home. He also had several surgeries to remove birds bones that got stuck in his throat. My current 20-year-old was an indoor/outdoor cat in a village for the first 12 years of her life. When I got her, I lived in a city near a busy street, so I didn't let her out. She's never tried to get out, so it's been fine. My city has a bylaw that your pets, including cats, have to be in your yard if off leash. Good luck keeping your loose cat in your yard! And now I live in an apartment and pets have to be on a leash any time they're outside. I'm okay with keeping them inside and they seem happy. I'm going to try leash training the 2 younger ones. I think that would be a good balance.

She did that year after year. I kept a good eye on her in the daytime when she'd go out. I would put her in the house when I went to work. She 21 years😊. My Russian blue cat Ringo used to go out roaming around for 9 or 10 days at a time before he'd come back. He did that for 5 years, he came up missing a week before last Christmas. I've been training him with harness and a few times he escaped or I let him out a bit alone , he comes back when called , but we don't venture to long ..I think I'm messing it up by not sticking to one routine, we will move again in 2.weeks , to the snow for the winter season and a part of me would love to have him roaming around , but I know it's now safe , I think there will be more cars etc so we will have to go out with the harness. Amy tips for an anxious cat mama , trying her best by trying a little bit to hard. He is happy enough , judging by play time and sleeping positions , but every morning he wants out for a while . So I need to compromise I think. Thank you so much for any help

Option #3. Have a hybrid. I let my cat out a few times a day for 20 minutes or so and half supervise him with no leash. He catches lizards, chases birds and squirrels, and roams around. If he roams to far or doesn't come in when I ask, no treat.

I prefer the mixed option whenever possible. A ratio of 2:1 indoors:outdoors seems be be a healthy balance. Many indoor cats that become overweight do so because they are left alone all day by humans who work and don't have the energy to engage the pet in play when they get home, the cat is left with far more food than it needs and it's only stimulation or comfort from the boredom and loneliness is food, then sleep, then more food, then more sleep.

My grandparents had an indoor-outdoor cat, named Raspy. Long story short is she came home one day with half her face missing. No one knows what attacked her. She was put down shortly after. If you read this and your cat likes to go outside, I urge you to either leash train your cat or get a catio. A catio is an enclosed space outside that lets your cat get the benefits of being outdoors without all the dangers.

Our lives are enriched by four cats and we are lucky to live in a large 100 year old house with a rambling garden with trees, grass, bushes, a large lawn and a pool. The cats are free to move in and out of the house as they like. They frequently catch lizards and occasionally catch a pigeon, but it is rare that they catch other birds. One of the cats is an excellent rat catcher and he and his sister spend part of the day hanging out near our compost heap whre occassinally rodents are to be found. It is shaded by a guava tree so they have somewhere high to lurk and check out the scene. The only complanits are from the neighbour's large dog who can sense cats but cannot get at them and from the guava tree whose bark is scratched without mercy. Views of the rats are not known. The cats usually spend the night on our bed or near us. We have the best of both worlds.

All my cats just showed up at my door and never left. Some of them are TNR (Trapped Nueter Return) cats. Meaning. Someone or organization trapped feral cats and fixed them, brought them back and they made thier way to my door. With much patience, these cats let me pet them as much as a socialized cat. They seem pretty skilled at avoiding coyotes and cars being that they've been arround for years. One day, a very beautiful fluffy ginger longhaired kitten showed up at my door and he almost came close to being eaten by coyotes so I brought him toy mom's house and we planned to keep him in the garage until we figured out how find him a home. It turns out he like living in the garage and he would be let out during the day. 4 years later he still lives in the garage, gets let out right before noon and comes back to be let back in dusk. If we want him back earlier, we just ring a bell and he always comes back. That cat is now my mom's cat and his name is Dino (the cat featured on my thumb nail icon.) He seems very happy with the arrangement and has never had any close encounters with coyotes ever since. He is also great company when we work in the garden.

I have a five year old that had the freedom to come and go through his cat flap.....we live in the suburbs. Two months ago we noticed a new cat in the area, an unneutered tom, who began haunting our back garden and harassing our cat. Then two weeks ago this cat viciously attack our cat...what the vet called the "killer bite"...full face on, he had deep bites in lower jaw, three deep bites in his head and neck and badly scratched eye. Vet has said that for his own safety he needs to be an indoor cat from now on. This is proving hard as he looks so sad and depressed now that he has more or less recovered and is off all his meds. He has always hated a litter tray and we soon realised he got very agitated and meowed loudly when he wanted the toilet. But now what do we do? How to keep him happy and motivated for the rest of his life.

After letting one of three cats out for about an hour at a time twice a day for his life of 8 years, I now have changed my mind and I'm not going to allow it anymore. One of my other cats I let out now and then got bit by a dog, had to take him to the vet cuz he had a bad limp, and thankfully he's doing really well after 4 days on Zorbium and rest. It just scared me and it took a lot out of me. So I had been leash training the kitty that goes out the most that I'm now going to keep you in and I've taken him out a couple times for a little bit of walking. He only flopped over once and did fine. He really likes just sitting on the porch with me with his leash on so that works for outside time. I also got him a stroller. I feel sad he can't go out. I'm taking away the most important thing to him and it really kind of hurts, but I'm in a neighborhood on the outskirts of town. I can't be sure there's not some wacko in the neighborhood who shoot him or hurt him, but if I lived in a more country atmosphere with reliable neighbors I wouldn't have any problem with letting him out through a cat door whenever he wanted.

It's intresting that this is such a controversial topic, but it also kind of makes sense. It's an important ethical dilemma, just a cat specific version of it. But people sometimes forget that despite the disagreements everyone just wants what is best for their pets.

We have had Luna since she was a rescue barely old enough for solid food. She has always wanted to be outside. Recently, she got outside and wound up, biting me so badly that even having it cleaned out by my EMT daughter was not enough and I wound up in the emergency room. She also recently went to take a chunk out of my son when he tried to keep her from getting outside. It is literally getting to the point where I’m thinking we’re just going to have to let her out and hope she comes back home. Does anyone have any advice on that transition?

Too many cat owners just chuck cats outdoors as it's easier and involves no effort. It should be seen as the same as having a dog. Walks on a leash, stimulus and being kept safely. Indoors is safe, responsible and kinder to the environment. I have three indoor cats and I take that seriously, with playtime, stimulation and fun. Cats should be cared for as much as any other animal.

Then moved into the city with 3rd 5th and 6th which were now indoor cats. 3rd died of old age 6th got hit by a car. Moved with 5th cat. 7th cat was resued 8th cat was a stray the decided my home would be a good place to have kittens 9th cat is daughter of 8th cat. 5th 7th and 8th cat run into the bedroom when I open the outside door. That is my 8 cats. Other than 5th cat, hopefully they out live me.
