I'm retired, so my cat has company all the time but whenever I'm away for an overnight absence or longer my cat goes to stay with my friend, so his routine stays as close to normal as possible and he's with people he knows and likes and in surroundings he's familiar and comfortable with.

After a couple of my cats tore up 3 sets of horizontal mini blinds, I purchased the Levelor vertical blinds that don't have anything on the bottom, so the cats are free to get on their window perch. I don't know what took me so long, but lesson learned.

We learned that in the early 2000s, when vertical blinds started becoming common.

We have neighbors/friends who look after our cats/dog when we go out of town. They come by twice a day to feed them. Our dog is such a slut puppy they take her home with them n she plays with their dogs. 🤣 We’re very lucky to have good neighbors/friends who love animals. 🙏🏻💖

This was helpful. My family adopted a cat last year and has been wondering about how to do travel with him. Do you have any videos about traveling and taking your cat with you?

Get information from the airport or bus company

You might need to give more info as to HOW you are planning to travel. One thing I would ensure is getting them harness trained. A cat with a harness would be quickly recognized as a pet, and it might be much easier to find should it escape somehow if you use a color that stands out or is reflective. Depending upon where you plan on traveling, you may need to worry about "wild" dogs, coyotes, and foxes, which are among those animals known to hunt cats. A harness color that these animals have difficulty distinguishing against your cat's coat might be warranted. You want humans to see your cat, but not their predators.

Get your cat chipped so if lost you can be reunited. Get a harness & retractable leash set, with a glow tag to see where your cat is in the dark. Make sure the cat has a tag with your contact info on it. I started my cats out traveling with me daily to and from work - it was just part of their life. Always have their food, treats & water available for them while traveling - as well as a portable litter box. A blanket or fuzzy bed with all the familiar scents of home is comforting. Start early training your cat to travel, and be consistent. And NEVER leave your cat unattended in a car with the windows up and AC off! If you are flying, get your cat a seat next to you - cargo containers can kill your baby!
@Sarafimm25 ай бұрын
@@terfalicious I agree with paying for an inside the plane seat for your cat carrier--never do "under the seat" carriers. Some airlines have a large space near the front or back of the plane for you to put down crates for large dogs. Contact several airlines going to/from your destination and find out what their pet policy is. Be flexible during your travel plans. Nothing ever goes perfectly with pets or small children. No matter what, get a pet carrier twice or three times the size they actually need. The more space they have, the better. And carry extra blankets or a portable fan with extra batteries for extreme conditions--their own carry on if you pay for a full seat for them is wonderful because you can bring everything in a "baby bag" and not worry about your checked luggage getting lost. Yesterday, I read about some poor short-snouted dog (American Bulldog?) who died inside the passenger section of a Delta flight because of heat exhaustion. With a larger carrier, you would have more space to do whatever you could to keep them clean, warm/cool, and comfortable. It all comes down to which do you value more, money or your pet's life?

There are many videos from several creators here on traveling with a cat. We had a calming spray and calming treats. For the most part, they did pretty well. We drove so they were in a crate outfitted with blankets, beds, a litter box, as well as food and water.

Only time I've ever boarded my cats was because of an insect problem at which point the house was not an option.
@annegillespie39745 ай бұрын
Have used boarding places before when gone for a long period of time, even if expensive they are large spaces with wood floor his own blankets etc & with a window for viewing outdoors with lots care & attention! Had to really to a whole review when I decided to go that route !

Heat / AC should be a no brainer. If it's a too hot or cold for you, it's the same for your cat! I'm disabled in a care home so Magic gets me for 95% of the day lol.

With my two, the best option for us was to take them on vacation with us. I have a very needy Siamese. I'm glad we did since we had a winter storm while we were gone, and no one would've been able to check on them. For my next vacation, they will stay home with my mom.

This is quite helpful, as my sister and brother in law will eventually be getting me a cat, but I'm not allowed 2. Since I grew up with multiple cats in the home, I wasn't sure how I'd go about this, because my sister and I go on trips for 3 or 4 days during the Fall/Winter time to see out of state family, and my sister is allergic so there's no way I'd be allowed to introduce my cat to their dogs. And my brother in law works crazy hours, so I wouldn't be able to ask him to check in on my cat while we're out of town. I'm uncertain how I'd leave 2 rooms open, though. I live in an apartment that's only 1 bedroom and my bathroom is small. Before we get me a cat though, I do know I need to move my breakables and I need to figure out how to tuck away cords to avoid the cat chewing on them while I'm away. There's also days that I have to go to the post office and times I have to dog sit for them. So I've been looking into how to do this stuff. I've never experienced just one cat in a home growing up. There were always 2-4 cats at a time, and dry food was always in a dispenser for the cats. I've already looked into toys I think would be entertaining and looked into any cat trees that will fit in my little apartment. I look forward to finally getting a cat, but I know I have some work to do beforehand.

The multiple litter box "suggestion" really irritates me. I have two cats, and one litter box because I live in a small one bedroom apt. I have two cats because they're rescues and a bonded pair. I wasn't going to separate them, but I'm not going to put three litter boxes around my apt. They're fine with one. I've had zero issues.

Do you leave you brain at work, or turn it off only when on KZbin - Don't get a cat if you can't take care of it. A cat is a member of your family, not a stuffed toy to make you feel better when you come home.

If I ever have to leave my cats home alone one thing I will NEVER do is use Rover sitters especially after hearing of multiple pets dying in one of their sitters care just in the last week or two.

@Brenda-f9y5 ай бұрын
@@rocioaguilera3555 yes, I've seen at least 3 stories about it in the news just in the last week or two. PetSmart boarding is another one to never use apparently as I just saw a story regarding a dog dying in their care as well a couple days ago, maybe 4th of July but I don't remember the exact date for that one.
@ThePurringJournal5 ай бұрын
Like anything else, you have to be very careful. Always pick someone with a lot of experience and excellent reviews. Ask for references. Also, never skip the meet and greet beforehand. We love our Rover sitter.
@Brenda-f9y5 ай бұрын
@@ThePurringJournal we always get recommendations from our vet and she also highly discourages using any boarding facility or sitters through apps like Rover. Thankfully 95% of the time if I go out of town my husband stays home with them so we don't have to worry about it and on the few occasions that he does go somewhere with me we have neighbors that come care for them. Although most of them have dogs so my cats don't go stay with them because my cats absolutely hate dogs so our neighbors always come spends some time with them, feed and water them and change their litter if we're gone long enough that it needs to be. We also have 4 litter boxes that we use while we're gone as well.
