I have a Tortie. Her name is Turtle. She definitely has Tortitude. She thinks she is the queen around here. She lived in our back yard for about a year and then one day decided to move in. She tells me when it's bedtime and as I get ready for bed she is on the bed following, swatting and meowing as I walk past until I finally climb into bed. She is also a bed hog.

I can relate to the love for the uniqueness of the tortitude, as well as the loss of such a special pet. I’ve fostered a lot of cats over the years, but I definitely have a soft spot for Torties! When my son was a teenager, we had a litter of foster kittens, and the Tortie of the litter instantly bonded with him. He named her Baby, because she was the runt of the litter. She was so in love with him, she’d run to the door whenever she heard his car come up the street, and literally jump into his arms when he opened the door, and when he showered, she’d sit on top of the hamper waiting for him. She was with him through his high-school and college years, and into his early 20’s. It took a long time to recover from that loss, but swears he’ll never have anything other than a Tortie. He divides his time between Amsterdam and California for business now, but when he’s back home full time, the first thing he’s going to do is adopt a new Tortie 😻

Tortitude is a VERY real thing!! 😅 I adopted 2 little rescues that came from an abandoned house, after a hoarding situation, in May last year, after losing my 22.5 yr old little lady to cancer in April. 😢 My heart was absolutely broken. It was just me and her, after her mother died in 2016, & after both my adult kids moved out. She was my kids childhood cat. Adopting my 2 little orphan sisters, was the best thing I did. I miss Shadow so much, but life does go on, and these 2 were in desperate need of a home. One is a beautiful Bombay (mum or dad had to have been also), and then...there's my very fluffy, gorgeous little long hair tortie with a kink at the end of her tail from a break when she was very little. While my 'Bombie' is a little shy and pretty quiet, she's incredibly sweet and an affecionate little mellow snuggle bug!! ❤ Her Tortie sister on the other hand, is EXTREMELY vocal..I say 'musical' 😅 and very much knows what she does and does not want! While not being a fan a being held (she tolerates me, lol) she is a very bonded affecionate little head booper, and is constantly under foot (the reason she ended up with a broken tail, I'm sure, either by actually tripping someone, or not being noticed going through a door behind someone & getting the tip jammed? If there is a single wee or poop I am yet to discover & scoop (in only 1 of the 2 side by side litter trays) her protests are delivered on the floor, beside the offending tray, despite being 95% clean, & a completely 100% clean one next to it! 😂 She is constantly trilling, and singing, & non stop chatting. Despite my Bombie, Phoebe, now doubling her size since I got them when roughly 8-10 mths old, in May 2022., she, my firey little Freyja had remained very small under all the floof. Despite being smaller, she's always the instigator in play fighting. Phoebe is beyond patient with her, and is like a little mumma to a very rebellious & rogue wild child. 😅 Their antics absolutely keep me laughing out loud, every non snuggling, waking moment. She constantly carries her toy mice around & every day when I come home from work, there's a pile of all their toys ..on my bed. I am yet to see Phoebe do more than bat one around while playing. They are hands down, the best things in my daily life, and I am so glad I could give them an uncaged life, full of the love they deeply deserve, and that they got to stay together. Their different personalities beautifully balance each other out, but if theirs ever any 'mischief', I know EXACTLY which one is responsible, because... tortitude, IS a *_very_* real thing!!!! 😂❤ From Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺
@leashy1204 Жыл бұрын
Well in regards to the litter boxes... She may hate the kind of litter you are using. But first I would not keep two litter boxes in the same area. You need to move one of them. Also, I would add a litter mat under each box so that as they come out they can wipe off their feet and will collect litter from their little toes rather than it ending up in your carpeting or whatever. Do not use strong scented cleaners when you clean out the box. The box does not have to be entirely disinfected. Their scent should remain. So I just use Dawn Powerwash and water. Only use a little of the soap so as not to overpower their own cat scent from the box. This helps to keep them litter box trained.

I rescued my little tortie, Reeses, when she was a kitten 9 years ago. I work with the developmentally disabled. When I showed up at the group home I was working at one night, she greeted me on the porch. I was early so I spent a few minutes with her. She stayed on the porch all night and kept coming in the front door to find me. Needless to say she came home with me that morning. When I am home she is either in my lap or laying next to me most of the time. When she wants to play (which is at least twice a day), she 'cries' in front of me and/or nibbles my feet to tell me it is time! She's my world.

That's interesting that they are considered lucky. Our torbie continues to be the most timid and shy cat we have had. She hid for 2 and 1/2 days when she first came to us it took her some months to be really comfortable. She was a rescued a stray and I wonder if she was feral or had been abused. She is very sweet.
@bunnyduncan Жыл бұрын
Bev, I can tell you after fostering cats for 20+ years, that your sense that your kitty was either feral or abused is probably spot on; she was most likely born to a feral cat. One of my fosters was a very young, tiny pregnant cat. She appeared to be from a feral colony, and was extremely skittish and timid. She had five beautiful kittens, and we adopted her and the itty-bitty runt of her litter. Although her kitten, named Bailey, was affectionate and did all the things domesticated cats do - purring, kneading, seeking out attention, curling up in my lap - her mother, whom we named Pinky, due to her pink nose and beans, didn’t even purr for nearly two years! It took her even longer to seek attention or offer affection. We’ve had her for more than five years now, and even though she now sleeps as close to me as she can possibly get, she won’t allow us to rub her belly, which is very common with previously feral cats, because exposing their belly is a very vulnerable position. I’m glad you have such a sweet little Tortie girl, and it sounds like you have a really good instinct about her and her needs. I hope you have many years of companionship with her 😻
@bevleeming6703 Жыл бұрын
@@bunnyduncan Our girl Claire, was over 1 when we adopted her. When she was out and about in our house after we first adopted her, she played for such long periods of time without a break, well over an hour. She really loved our toys. She now comes to our bed in the morning, with quiet cries and wants pets. She walks over us and may settle on us for half a minute, then off she goes. But when my husband sleeps in, she'll lie off to his side. Sometimes when she's resting, and we come up, she gets in a cute position showing her belly and wants pets, and even seems to like us to rub her belly. Occasionally she settles on a lap for a short snuggle. But if you move too fast or bump into her, she goes off in a hurry. She takes a while to come out of hiding after we have visitors. We are still seeing slight improvements in her after 1 1/2 years.

Of course, I had to adopt her too. Now 2 years later, they are bonded sisters but the smaller Tortie, "Gizmo" because of her markings, rules the house for sure. Extremely smart, opens up the kitchen cabinet doors while I'm not home, searching for anything to eat or, an entire bag of catnip that she and her sister tore apart on the kitchen floor. 2 monsters for sure but they keep things interesting, the house plants dug up and me loved.

Yup, my dilute calico/tortie/caliby/mosaic/bridled AND patched/torbie has "tortitude." Most of the upper parts of my girl are the patches of gray and soft orange, with some mingling of the two. Her underside is pure white, including boots to the heels and mittens with a "string" connecting them to her chest fur, making it look like she's wearing a gray sweater that ends high on her body with long sleeves, stripy orange patches on both sides of her ribs, mostly gray "pants," with brindling down her spine and tail. She has a white and orange dagger on the gray hood that covers most of her face, other than one pale orange lip and her white chin. She is beautiful. And a guard cat. She knows what space I claim as mine, even when we live in a shared living space, and will protect it from those who do not live in our home while I am away. If I'm home, she trusts me to ward off those who don't belong, and keep watch over those I invite in. Found out about this from a frequent guest who invaded our room while I was at work. Two days later, she was still quaking in her shoes at the hostility my torti showed her for invading our room. Because she was still quaking, I was amused. "You're lucky you're still wary of her, or I'd be mad." After all, she had no legal right to break into my room. My beautiful girl is 14 years old now, and still going strong. Her favorite way to demand affection from me is to circle me and throw herself down in my path, making sharp, demanding meows at me until I rub her belly. If I fail to do so, she will continue to make demanding meows until I surrender the petting and patting of her belly. Very silly, very sweet... to me. Very few others are allowed to touch her at all, much less pet her belly. Yes, it's nice knowing that she is particularly fond of me.

@@rocioaguilera3555 Never said I owned her, only that she was mine, in the same way I'm hers. She did, after all, adopt me. Really. Maintenance man at the apartment complex I was living at back then took me to the apartment he'd stashed her in. She strolled out into the main room where we stood, and turned on a turbo purr from across the room. I had one test I put to her, which was if she would let me hold her. She did, for 45 minutes! That's the last time she let me hold her for more than a couple of minutes, let me tell you! But she passed my test, and I agreed to take her into my home. Never heard her growl until she warded off a spirit from making our home its haunt.

Great & informative video. I love all cats and tortoiseshell cats are one of my absolute favorite cats. They are beautiful and I've owned several. My "Boo-boo" was the most AWESOME tortoiseshell cat I've ever had. Amazingly smart & wise, she was sweet & lots of fun. With 2 of her liters of kittens, she provided me with some of the most amazing cats I've ever had & been greatly blessed to share my life with. Boo-boo is gone now and not a day goes by without me wishing she and her incredible daughter were still here with me. They'll never be two cats quite like "Boo-boo" and "Girl." 🐈🐈⬛🥰 I LOVE & MISS them with all of my heart.❤️❤️

"tortitude". I believe it. About 8 months ago we moved Into a house that had a "stray" tortice shell (believed to be male but haven't confirmed beyond the vet saying the previous owner of the house may have brought it in a while ago) and this cat, now named Jasper certainly can have a bit of attitude at times. He's generally good (has put on a good amount of weight too) swipes occasionally when my hand is concidered too In front of his face, sometimes will randomly attack (the other day his claw got caught on my sock when he took a swipe) but he will also usually claim my chest as his seat while I'm laying on the couch. In fact he's claimed my chest since the beginning really which is fine except when I'm trying to read or need move. I love my Jassie.😊

I had two kittens like this. While one was a true tortie the other was more to the calico side. The tortie was actually calmer while the smaller calico was fiery indeed. I remember reaching down to pet her once when she was a kitten and she sprang up and wrapped herself around my arm and started biting me. This became her usual greeting 😄

Our tortie, Oni, definitely has tortitude. She hisses if she doesn’t get her way. She doesn’t like too much petting. However she is the sweetest cat. She knows when you’re feeling blue or sick and stays by your side through the ick. She’s a talker too. Our Oni is very energetic and intelligent. She loves to dance. She’s a Maine Coon. I also call her Sweetpea.
@bunnyduncan Жыл бұрын
You have the best of both worlds… a Maine Coon AND a Tortie in one sweet cat! The fact that she loves to dance is like the cherry on top 😻 One of our cats is a Maine Coon, and although he’s not a Tortie, he is by far the chattiest of our cats, which is a characteristic of Maine Coons. His name is Little Bear, and was orphaned at just a few days old during the Napa County wildfires in 2015, and came to us as a special-needs foster. He was a chatty little spitfire, and I was so bonded with him, I decided to adopt him after fostering him for four months. In fact, four of our five cats were initially fosters, which makes me a bit of a ‘foster failure,’ because once they’re old enough and healthy enough, you’re supposed to return them to the shelter to be placed for adoption. As each new foster comes into our home, Bear can’t wait to groom, cuddle, and play with them. His attention and affection for these little guys gives them confidence and emotional support that cats can only get from other cats, despite all the love and care we humans provide. He’s proven to be a priceless co-foster cat-parent (sorry for the wordy term I just made up on the fly 😹) which is why we’ve ended up adopting so many of our fosters. I wish you and Oni Sweetpea many years of chatty companionship 😽

My mother raised purebred champion Manx cats back in the 1950s and 60's, and her cats were ancestors of many purebred Manx today. She gave them all Gaelic names. One tortoiseshell, Morrigan, was memorable. Much later, as an adult, I had one or her descendants, another tortie, Pooka. They both were kooky and feisty. As for weird tortie markings, a recent neighbor's cat was quite amazing, nostly black in front, with bright orange hind legs. I called her Miss orange pants.

We live in a rural area and happenstanced upon a feral female tortoiseshell kitten about 8 years ago. Had her desexed and examined by a bet and never had a cat like her. She walks with us each morning for a kilometre, won’t do her toilet duties without us on that walk, still bites when lying down but otherwise just a love, doesn’t like other people, is my partners best friend when in bed and mine in daylight hours, has a small fingernail size bit of peanut paste and a drink of oat milk each morning and thinks sleeping next to the wood heater is tops. When younger, jumping from a reasonably high position from tree to tree over a short distance like a flying squirrel was her favourite trick. One affectionate movement Pepper does is to stand on her hind legs and demand to be petted when first greeted. She is a great companion and we love her. WARNING: Cats can choke on peanut paste.

I once had a tortie and she is just the most affectionate cat I ever had. We named her Mimi cuz she always meows "Miii" so cutely. She was sooo feminine. She died years ago :< However 4 years later, (which is now, btw), it's as if my dearly Mimi came back to me. Another tortie just showed up at our house with her kitties. Because of her resemblance to my former tortie, I named her Mimi, too. She was feisty, and she always carries herself with sass or poise or whatever they cal it, lol. She gets annoyed easily by her kits but she just comes back after her 'cat break' to nurse them and be a loving mom to them again.😂 When I started attending college school, I met another tortie at the campus grounds. She exudes such femininity that I'm convinced I'm such a magnet of such divas!

My tortie, Boo, definitely has spunk and sass. Bold too, jumps into the shower with you. Her favorite kitten game was jump and cling; calf, knee cap, foot hanging off bed, or kidney area when sitting on an open back chair. Pops my Aussie on the nose, though she nuzzles up to my pit mix (who is more docile than the Aussie). Best is when she wants to be left alone, eyes will still be closed, but those claws are in full display. Have her trained to give me a high 5 when she wants to be left alone. Also my music buddy. Has to lay on my lap when I play, or else kidney shot. Yet despite perforate organs and shredded skin, she's a loving sweetie the vast majority of the time. Kneads in my beard when cuddling. She purrs so loud, it took my one dog a year to realize she isn't growling.

So he upset her at some point.... Does he want to win back her trust? If so, allow him to be the one who feeds her. Have him give her whatever favorite snacks are. He will be the only one to feed her and you will have to leave this entirely in his hands. You are not to give her any food at all. When he feeds her he needs to use baby talk and be very loving with her during these times. Regaining trust is possible even after all these years. Have him also hand her toys as gestures of affection like bringing her a gift. Have him to say hello and goodbye to her as he comes and goes from the house. And as he enters and leaves the room she is in. This will make her feel like she is a priority in his life and she will adjust her attitude towards him.
