Imagine being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers fresh out of college and coming to camp with NO QB Coach to work with and your starting veteran QB decides he doesn't feel it's his job to mentor you? -- That's the Mason Rudolph story folks. 📍 I'm happy this guy is finally getting his chance.

Not to mention he was then thrust into a starting role that same year. He's been knocked out cold by the ravens, hit with his helmet, booed out of the stadium, benched, demoted, released and demoted again. Everything that could cause a qb to have any fear has already happened to him and then some, and that fearlessness showed in the pocket on Saturday. If he's been doing his homework which it looks like he has he could be something. He always had a hell of an arm

@@spencerscott6347 Yeah its much simpler for me. Hes to Short, and Leans far to much on the timid offensive aggression side. Also from my view it looks like 80% of the balls leaving his hands are soft wobblers and floaters. Its like he has no kinda pro velocity at all. In my opinion He will never get over those 3 flaws. So it Should be a real short leash next year. He should know its no longer his team to lead. Next year should be his time to fight for a roster spot

Mason's pocket presence has improved mightily. I remember watching him start in 2019, and he had really bad happy feet. He looks way more confident, and the dude has a cannon for an arm. The play at 4:36 is what really stood out to me. Kenny would have done his stupid spin to the left trick for a sack, but Mason just hung in there and delivered a strike.

I agree. He looked much more confident in the pocket than in the past. He withstood the pressure and went through his progressions. Remember, despite his time in the league, he's only had 11 starts. Mason has improved. I hope he really gets a chance somewhere next year.

That Mason played as well as he did after sitting for literally 2 years straight is honestly more than just a little impressive - it was straight up awesome. I think with proper development, he could easily be a better starting QB for Pittsburgh than Kenny Pickett going forward into next year. What do you think, JT? Do you think Mason's raw accuracy, anticipation, footwork, courage, and decision making skills can potentially come together in such a way that he becomes a proper upgrade at the QB position for Pittsburgh going forward?

Being an upgrade over Pickett is an extremely low bar lol
@AndyWitmyer
@AndyWitmyer 6 ай бұрын
@@darrynriskus5180 True, true. But the question is - how much of an upgrade can he be? I don't think the Steelers really even know what they truly have with Mason, in terms of his ceiling. Tomlin is clearly awful when it comes to evaluating talent that they have, and having been blessed with a HOF franchise QB for 90% of his coaching career ensured that he has no real experience in developing QBs - problems that have become increasingly painfully obvious in the aftermath of Ben's retirement. I genuinely believe that Mason, had he been given proper coaching / mentoring / at least a full season or two of being given first team reps at QB1, might very well look less like a glorified top tier backup who's somewhat better than Kenny and more like a legitimately decent, perhaps mid-to-upper mid tier QB1. I don't think it's too late to find out, either. Mason's literally only 2.5 years older than Kenny (who joined the NFL much later than most). The Steelers will probably squander that opportunity and pull Mason the first bad game he has (even though though they let Kenny and Trubisky play through several bad games), but I guess we'll see. Here's the hoping the kid continues to exceed expectations.
@darrynriskus5180
@darrynriskus5180 6 ай бұрын
@@AndyWitmyer agreed - the eye test suggests that he has more physical gifts than Pickett and his pocket presence and decisiveness are much better than Pickett's at this stage. I want to see him string together a couple good games before I declare him the savior though - we've seen several recent Linsanity-esque runs by backup QBs who later fell back down to earth (Josh Dobbs)
@user-xo7go4rr7g
@user-xo7go4rr7g 6 ай бұрын
Mason is a backup for a reason. The trend of backups having legacy games and flailing (Dobbs,Browning,Devito Etc.) has been a trend this year. I like Rudolph as a guy rn for us but he’s realistically a really good backup in the league and not a franchise guy. Weve known this for a while despite one good game. However Pickett is not the answer either. Pickett doesnt make these kind of throws in relatively the same offensive scheme in which Rudolph and Co. scored 31. Its clear the players are done with Pickett. There was life with Rudolph at center. Get a guy like Kirk or draft Daniels or Penix. Not completely writing off kenny but he’s a 5 year college player and should probably sit/compete for a spot or behind a vet QB and learn.

Not bad for a guy who hasn’t played a game in 2 years. And even the one game he did play in 2 years ago he found out the night before the game that he was starting. He hasn’t started a game where he knew he was starting and got all of the practice reps since 2019 in only his second year. Mason hasn’t ever gotten much of a chance but he looked really good and he’s got all of the attributes you would want in a prototypical QB.

it's obvious that it's INFINITELY better than when canada was calling the shots. I'd be curious to see where they could go with things with more stable QB play than mitch could give them. Kenny got one game with them and looked great. mitch stunk up the joint for 3 games, then mason looked even better. I wouldn't be surprised if they kept expanding the playbook/calls as either QB got more comfortable.

@@MrJimmydean1I somewhat disagree. I believe coaching is part of the problem with their WR’s not hitting the first down markers. The speed outs, if it’s a 3rd and 12 and in practice, these things are made to be 10 yards, that’s not on the WR or QB…why are you as a coaching staff, calling a play where you know the routes are 10 yard timing routes!

Great breakdown! For not starting in two years, a solid Rudolph performance. Hoping to see a little more gameplan on week two against Seattle (ex: building off the speed outs as you noted with CAT/Hinge/Sluggo/Wrap in) and maybe since 14 gets all the attention, a plan more focused on 18 and even, gasp... TE/88 (It seems like the Canada playbook doesn't acknowledge that the TE is an eligible receiver!) I'm sure he'd love to have that slot fade to Johnson back again! We'll see what he does on week two once the opponent has film on him. Last random thought: Rudolph seems to have a better pocket presence than Pickett (who appears to bail after his first read often).

Really enjoy your videos. I love learning as much as I can about the specifics of the game. Hopefully they will use the almost overuse of the speed out routes to set up an out and up route if they get the right look. And it would be great if we could get better depth on their routes, especially on 3rd downs. It was great to see Mason come out and have such a great performance. You're absolutely right about the scheme. I've even heard from other former QB's that have broken down the Steelers that they don't actually have many play options for each formation. So basically when a team sees the personnel group and formation, they know it is basically one of two or so plays. I wish they would have fired Matt Canada before the season. But here's hoping Mason can have a similar performance this Sunday🤞🤞🤞 Definitely appreciate the breakdowns!!✌️❤️🫡

I know you don't watch the Steelers all the time JT, worth noting the reason for all the outside passes here is probably because Pat Freiermuth tore the Bengals a new one up the middle a few weeks back. They were not going to let that happen again but it left them open to the speed outs. Now, this plays into Rudolph's strengths. A really good arm, he's always been good with the deep ball. What he's struggled with is intermediate passes. If he pays against the Seahawks I guess we'll see if he's improved there. What's interesting to me in this game is how often it's Allen Robinson playing outside and how often Diontae Johnson is in the slot on these passing plays. That feels new to me.

You don't throw out what was working because you think your backups can't handle it. Now Trubisky really couldn't handle it, but even if he was still out there, you gotta keep calling the plays that work. It feels like fear from the playcalling staff.

As always excellent stuff here.. but as a fan of the Steelers I will say that the score of the game may have dictated some of the repetitive speed outs during the 4th q. Why show more on tape for opposing teams to scout? Especially with a 3 possession lead in the 4th.

I don’t think Diontae was “angry”. It was one of those “oh man I had him” type of reactions. You can see he was really “angry” as he came back to the huddle. This film here is cut short

Great Channel &Optics/ Evaluation but I think you have to take into perspective --> The O-Lines Play. We have been weak all year thoroughly and Dan Moore is a weak link as well as others. It is what it is at this point until the next off-season. Great job overall Bro I'm loving the detailed analysis. I coach 6th grade football & have a 1.5 yr old I'm interested to see how the Game Evolves.
@enjoyer6201
@enjoyer6201 6 ай бұрын
One thing to keep in mind is that our quarterbacks have made the o-line look even worse. Mason knew to stay firmly in the pocket and let the horseshoe develop around him, whereas Kenny and Mitch were bailing out way too early, they weren’t in the spots they needed to be, and were making it harder for the line. When your quarterback isn’t where he is supposed to be, that makes it infinitely harder for the line to hold the pocket around him.

I have watched every Mason Rudolph game as a steeler, the Dionte trips post Mason isn't going to throw unless the safety bites harder. He is a take care of the ball guy. Which is why he is the number 3. What we hope is that Kenny makes the throw, but he has been missing them.

6:00 Mason Rudolph displays great leadership there not throwing to 18. leadership means knowing your perople and putting them in positions they will shine in. Diontae SUCKS at breaking tackles when needed. He has such a huge tendancy to run backwards, great Rudy tucked and ran.

Old school here. Back in the day, new QB s sat bench, watched and learned. Today's expectations, 1st rounders start day 1. Today a # 1 is given room to grow, make mistakes and grow, and 2 - 3 years before you write them off. KP , I believe is a starter. MR , I believe is also a starter. Tribiski has foot work and timing issues, relying too much on his arm and athletic ability, but with a strong coach could be a starter, with work. What are your thoughts?

Kenny had ONE game without Canada and balled out. Did Mason do well? Sure. Relied heavily on GP to do it, but whatever. But a lot of people seem to be hitting Kenny with strays for no reason. Dude did really well all things considered WITH Canada, and did a whole lot better in the 1 game without him. Only QB who's been stinking up the place is Trubisky.

@@definitelynotlawlcano5256 that’s the thing, he didn’t do “really well”. Offense averaged 16 points per game. That is not “really well”. Is Canada’s system shit? Yes. Can a good enough QB execute that system? Yes. Mason is still playing with Canada’s system. That hasn’t changed. Still need to execute and score touchdowns.

@03Man11 I'm gonna add more punctuation to make it clearer for you. All. Things. Considered. He. Did. Really. Well. Under. Canada. Comparing post-canada Rudolph who has the benefit of them tweaking plays to get the stink of Canada off of them to Pickett playing UNDER CANADA is beyond stupid. All things considered, pickett did well in a bad system with an OC that shouldn't even be coaching in peewee calling the plays.

@@definitelynotlawlcano5256 literally, nothing has changed. Same simples plays Canada was calling. They’re still throwing go routes on 3rd downs when it’s man coverage. Nothing has changed, only the execution.

@03Man11 if you think they're still calling jet sweeps and bubble screens on 3rd and a mile.. or run plays from shotgun on 4th and goal.. when literally none of that was called against the Bengals... Eddie and Sullivan have been tweaking plays, from formation to motions, even the players have said so. Eddie and Sullivan do not call the same type of plays at the same times that Canada would and not get a single first down until the 3rd. Comparing a QB or offense as a whole under Canada to one that is using 90% the same playbook but called by competent people, and calling it apples to apples, is ridiculous. The only logical thing I can come up with is that you've never played football, and probably just started watching recently.
