This story is very moving and touching. There are still good human beings in the world. It's sad people would rather speculate in your comments that there must have been something uncivil happening. Why is it so hard to believe someone can be kind and care for others? I believe it was a pure relationship. He must have loved her as a daughter. She sounds very kind and sweet. You can hear the innocence in her voice.

I know everyone is happy for her windfall, but there were some troubling concerns. Why is she living paycheck to paycheck and supporting so many kids. Where's the father? He needs to cover daycare expenses and she needs to work. I would purchase a home, pay off debt, pay taxes, and leave the rest alone. Contrary to popular belief, $1.25 million isn't that much. She could end up in debt after taxes, a few vacations, a home purchase (which will require maintenance and repairs), and one unscrupulous family or boyfriend.

If it's through an estate it's not income, it's inheritance, and there should not be tax on that from federal. Some states attempt to have an inheritance tax though. Precisely. She said, "Well, I was his assistant, and I did all these things for him, yada, yada..." I kept saying out loud..."well, yeah...you were his assistant. This is what assistants do." She made it sound like she was doing him some big favor and not a job he was paying her to do. At any rate, good for her. She's been quite blessed, and I hope she follows Dave's advice.
