I was "with" a woman that made a lot more than I did. She was used to buying and doing what ever she wanted. She was a quality lady and brought a lot of quality to my life, but I simply wasn't able to "keep up" with her financially. I liked doing the things she liked to do like concerts and travelling, but I had been very disciplined with money, and I didn't travel or go to concerts that cost $150 a ticket. After she "treated" a couple of times it looked like the trend was going to continue but I was uncomfortable with the financial relationship being so one sided. We stayed friends though and when she got married I provided the music for their wedding and reception. Her husband is a much better fit for her than I was. BTW I was able to retire at 59 but I still don't spend $150 for concert tickets. LOL

But I’m like you, I look for much smaller money amounts of entertainment, like taking our granddaughter to the movies, which by the time I buy tickets, popcorn and drinks, it’s $50. I dated a girl about 5 years ago and I would go out with her family to the lake and I thought they were rich. They had boat (over $100k new), a trailer (nearly $100k new), 2 trucks ($120k for both), side by side ($30k), a house ($600,000), mom drove a BMW X5 ($70k), and a few other expensive toys. Once night I was sitting there drinking with the dad by the lake and he was telling me how he was stressed because of a financial situation and if it fell through he didn't think they could survive. I said yea well you are doing well for yourself, I am sure you could survive for a while until you figure it out. I said you could sell some stuff off and have plenty of money. Then he told me how it was all financed and that he owed more than any of it was worth. He said he only had a few hundred dollars left at the end of each month after he paid all their bills, food, etc. I couldn't believe it. He made around $200k a year and his wife didn't work. They were broke. I made around $100k at the time, and my only debt was student loans (that I could pay off because i am a natural saver, and i have since paid off) and now my house is my only debt. I don't know how they are doing now, but I hope he got it under control. I get stressed at the thought of debt, IDK how people do it.

Once divorced doctor. Chances of a 2nd divorce are quite high. Establish a trust for yourself, then spend several months talking with your boyfriend about money and finances, then each of you outline your top 5 rules for money along with your top 5 goals for life, then see if you are truly financially and philosophically compatible, then get a prenup.

She would be earning closer to $480,000 USD and he would be earning $110,000 USD. The ratio in earning remains the same, whether is was made in Canada or the USA. If she was earning her money in Canada (and we convert it to USD) and he was earning his money in the USA, that’s $480k USD and $150k USD. No matter how you look at it, she earns considerably more money than he does. In her first marriage, she was denied access to the finances. She wants to share what she has worked so hard to build, yet needs to control and protect the assets she had before the relationship moves into marriage. There are men and women alike who search for their ‘payday’ in a partner. Dave is giving her the same advise he has given to men.

@@tomm8025 I don’t think so. He just knows human nature. She’s been a victim of financial abuse. That has to be acknowledged. And, even if the financial imbalance is not an issue for the two of them, there’s the issue of family members. When you marry, family is part of the package. If he is close to his family and one of his family members has a financial emergency, the temptation may be too great to want to bail them out-which means that wife gets involved. A pre-nup will possibly outline how those issues are to be addressed. Not acknowledging her past pain and addressing that in the current relationship is a recipe for disaster.

I’m amazed at how people think debt is okay. I’ve a cousin who learned from her parents that debt now means fun now. “Live life while you’re young.” She stays constantly in debt with her fancy car, four wheelers, dune buggy, camper, boat and big house. Rubbing my nose in the fact that she LOOKS wealthy lol I’m proud to say I’ve never had debt…in my 34 years of life I never ever acquired debt. I paid cash for older cars and rented house- until I got married. My husband and I still pay cash for older cars and we recently saved enough to pay cash for house. So we are good. Now extra money saved can go toward our future and maybe some fun toys like a dune buggy someday…as long as we can pay full and cash.

See this is the flaw with so many people. Debt is not a bad thing. IT'S NOT. It can be your best friend if the perspective and usage of debt changes. In the situation you laid out with your friend I agree that it's a total waste of money. She's dumb and things like that will make you broke. If you use debt to buy things that put money in your pocket, then that debt becomes an asset. There are people out there with tens of millions of dollars of debt or more, and that debt is lining their wallets and net worth cash over fist.

I feel like a limited prenupt is a good idea. Establishing the idea that in the case of divorce assets going into the marriage and future earnings are seperate. Income and assets they acquire together during the marriage are split evenly regardless of who's income played a higher role in getting those asssets. That way the marriage is treated as together, but if that worst-case scenario happens she'd be able to move on without damage to her income.

It’s very difficult to earn a high income as a woman. I’ve experienced a similar situation. My ex-fiancé made a ton of money and used that as a way to control me. He would come home with a car and not even discuss or text me about it. Fifteen year later I graduated from school and my husband (different guy) couldn’t handle the fact that I out earned him. I was very sensitive to say our paycheck. I never disagreed with anything he wanted because he would make terrible comments about his career never taking off. As a woman it is hard when you are walked all over because you don’t make money or other men resent you for making a high income also

I think an important point is that one who makes less has to be 100% truthful with the one who makes more. If the one who makes less is a fantastic steward with money, there's much less to worry about. And a genuine partner will want to protect their loved one, which will be evident in their actions. Lots of options here, but certainly not a horrific situation. Only be wise in giving trust, but not unwilling to give trust.

Depends on community property laws as well. Check your state to make sure if this law applies. If it does, get a prenup. If not, keep separate checking accounts and contribute to a joint account for joint expenses or continue with a prenup anyways.

No, I get both sides. Dave pretty much always says for richer or poor, he almost never recommends a prenup besides in cases of extreme situations. But it’s always for the favor of the woman. You never know what peoples situation may be. I make 450 , my wife makes 130 (we’re in our early 30s). I support my brother (who has mental health problems ) and my parents (father with dementia) completely (all their expenses and home) and ourselves and now have a baby on the on the way. I’m not complaining , we’re comfortable but we don’t live like most would expect with our income. Not to mention about 45% goes to taxes. We’re fortunate to be able to help our family, but I always expected making this kind of money would be way different than it is.

I want to get a prenup agreement no matter what the situation is, I don't care if I make less income or more income. I want myself and a future spouse to have our own separate financial accounts then I want us to have joint accounts that we are both responsible for contributing to every month except for months when one of us is not employed. The money we contribute to that account doesn't have to be 50/50 but it would be used for all joint expenses. Then, if a divorce happens, only the joint accounts get split up and the house(s) we both go in on get split up (share of mortgage payments for joint properties while married doesn't matter to me but going 50/50 on the down payment would, but that's negotiable). If a potential spouse can't agree to this or an adjustable version of this than I am not getting married with them. Kid(s) with them maybe, but not marriage.
