I felt stuck in my early-20's. My wife barely spoke English, and we lived in a one-bedroom apartment with no furniture other than a mattress on the floor and a rickety wicker chair. We were using a credit card to buy groceries at one point and borrowing $50 at a time from my mom. I got turned onto self-improvement books and we started pushing. Years later, we both have degrees and good jobs, and we're now 13 days from starting baby step 6. It's amazing looking back on those crazy times.

I started working fast food and then went on to driving a forklift in a warehouse. Fast forward 5.5 years later, i'm entering the last year of my masters in engineering, and just accepted a full time job offer at a firm i've been wanting to get in for the past 3 years. I was never the fastest running, and no where near the smartest cookie. It's called work ethic and grit. Only in America

Anna Marie Campbell came to USA from Jamaica when she was 18. No money no education no friends no connections. She was starting from scratch. She applied for a part time job at Home Depot and got hired. She worked hard and loved her job. She stuck with it thru thick and thin and got promoted. Now 30yrs later she is in charge of ALL USA Home Depot stores and gets paid about $2,000,000 a year.

I was a young single mother without much family support. I decided to go back to school and the lady I babysat for said I could not do it. I did go back! I now have a BS in nursing and am a registered nurse. I have been able to support my son just fine. During school we were really broke but I knew it was temporary and never felt poor. I was just in transition. One of my many embarrassing memories was that I had only 2 pairs of pants while I was in school. I rotated them with different shirts. I remember one fall I only had $20 to buy my son school clothes. I found him several shirts and shorts at the clearance rack at Walmart and they were fine for a few months ( it was still hot in Southern CA). After I got married I went back and got a Masters in Public Health in Health Education. With the confidence from all my schooling I have started a KZbin cooking channel (for my dad!). I had to keep learning new skills to do that to. I am still learning new things all the time! New knowledge and new skills opens new opportunities!

I'm a liberal. But I've been trying to get my coworker to get unstuck. He has been working one job since he got out of high school. He is always so negative. He is a good person but it as painful to be around his bellyaching. I convinced him to put applications out to other places, he has. Now I have to convince him to follow up on them. "You're competing against hundreds of people, show them that you care and want the position." Climbing is an action. Sitting in one place is less action. Take steps, be proactive, and jump.

@Sith'ari Azithoth you can say the same about conservatives. The Republican party has been hijacked by evangelicals, racists, misogynists, homophobes and fascists. RIP to John McCain. I didn't always agree with him but he was a good man and the last "real" Republican in the senate.

Why do you guys HAVE to identify as something? Stop dividing everybody up. Just be a human that takes care of himself and family. Work..live on less than you make and mind your own business. Oh and if you need more....WORK MORE!!!!! DUH!!!!! Go get a part time job at a grocery store instead of just coming home and sitting in front of the TV feeling sorry for yourself.

Dave is a perfect example of what my grandmother use to say when she said "chew up the meat and spit out the bones." Ideologically I diverge from Dave a lot, but when he’s right about something he’s right. I don’t dismiss him completely because we have divergent ideological points of view. I take what’s helpful to me and for me, and I leave everything else behind. I wish more of us would do that across the spectrum

6 years later I am walking out of college with no debt into my dream career path. I started out no car, $1400 in debt at the age of 17. Now I read 2-3 non-fiction books a month, paid off college with my own side businesses and walking into two job interviews this Thursday. I have no debt and am super educated on my career so the jobs I pick I can choose at my leisure. Leaving with 2g in my bank account as well! I wasn't stuck I just had to have the right attitude and to find old rich people who hate leaves! Thanks, Dave!
