I agree completely regarding Victoria. But I don't know, Victoria's Mom pointed out how popular Victoria is in all other aspects of her life, but in the DCC environment, she'd sort of not be so popular... look at this season for instance, it almost looked like she was somehow not part of the family... And in all honesty, I feel like Victoria is such a sweet human being, isn't it?

@@KiaundraJackson Can we also speak about that girl that got molested on AT&T stadium grounds. It was said in the episodes that the AT&T stadium is on the Guinness book of world records for the most amount of TV's. @@tshenolomxathule734 I don't think she got the support she needed (from Kelly, Judy or the police). That part of the episode fell flat for me. Or maybe the organization & stadium didn't want any negative publicity so they "made it go away." I'm not sure but that's a guess lol

I felt so bad for the bus driver! He said that he had been wanting to quit, but Kelly wouldn’t let him and you could see that he was visibly shaking the first time he appeared on the show. Then he ended up in the hospital. He doesn’t even have access to go into the stadium and use the restroom while he’s waiting out by the bus. Awful treatment.

I've always been a fan of the Dallas cowboys cheerleaders. And even more when the series started years ago. Time after time, it shows how great it is to be apart of the organization. But these talented women go through too much and sacrifice everything and aren't even paid enough nor treated farely. Especially regarding their mental state. As much as they harp on body image issues, if a small pooch with skin shows, they're told they need to lose weight. It's sad.
@manzanaverde3174

What’s upsetting is they don’t get paid much. One of them stated that they make as much as a full time Chick-fil-A employee. Meanwhile their football players make bank. They say they don’t have height or weight requirements but their actions show the contrary. Let’s be honest they will never put a woman who has some jiggle.

One of the main things that bothered me from the show is the mentality the cheerleaders have that DCC is worth evrything. The cheerleader they showed that she had been in DCC for 5 yrs and needed surgery on her hip and foot, ahe said it was worth it. How can it be worth it if u live in a shoebox apartment with your sister, having had two surgeries and stuck not being able to move forwars with plans for the future? I liked the cheerleaders more than I expected to. They seemed like genuinely good people. I also liked how the filmmakers went in depth about the darker side of each woman’s history. I was utterly disgusted at how the Cowboys Cheerleaders owner justified paying them minimum wage. These are serious athletes. They have so many expenses to be on the team, they get lifelong injuries from cheering, and they shouldn’t have to work a full time job then run to practice just to survive. To pay them a pittance and justify it by saying “it’s an honor just to be here” is so slimy and patronizing. I can’t remember what the two women who lead them are called, but their tough love comes off as playing favorites and bullying at times. Reducing a woman to tears isn’t good leadership, in my opinion. P.S. I just found your channel and I love you!

The creepy guys that gravitate toward them, and the loss of personal authenticity really worried me. It doesn't seem like a safe activity, in any way. It's super hard on their bodies, minds and spirits. What appears like total perfection, isn't even enough to be successful. Definitely doesn't meet the standards of relationship harmony. Safety, authentic expression and trust/stability are absent. The instant comradary may be a trauma bond too. The cheerleaders seemed like nice people. They truly want to be a part of the organization. If there were such unreasonable expectations between me and my dream job, I'm not sure if I would be able to sacrifice so much of my identity to get my goal. Great analysis as always! Thank you.

The moms were best friends and the girls grew up as best friends. Kelly and Judy were her aunties. As a DCC, she never quite got their approval, so it’s like she was rejected by her family in many ways. Plus here mom was a little off. Sounds like her Dad was abusive. Mad props to her that she was finally able to leave on her own terms 🙏🏼 Reece was the most interesting to me because she just seems 100 % pure but yet her dream was to be this sexy provocative dancer. I‘m in a completely different industry but this show really opened my eyes. Everyone in my college class wanted to join the firm I got an offer from. I was so happy. So proud. And then so terrified, when I actually got in. It turned out to be absolute hell. Looking back, I have to acknowledge that I was manipulated, underpaid and used. And I have to own my part in this because I idolized the partners, the company brand and totally risked my own health to advance. I berated myself for finally quitting after a few years. But this show made me realize that I‘d made the right call. And I’m never gonna work for a firm like that again. If a company insists on its great „spirit“, insists it’s all a „family“ and use it as justification as to why it won’t compensate employees fairly: no thank you.

My My.. watching this just makes me think of how many individuals loose themselves in their careers while missing out on time with their own families.. Also lets say it for the folks in the back, the Cowboys franchise is one of the richest out there, why aren't they compensating these women for there hard work and dedication to the organization. The same way the NFL, NBA etc. are incorporating Mental Health providers in their organizations why aren't they (meaning the organizations) extending that service to the there cheerleaders/dancers- they work very hard.

Thank you for this video and the insights. As a ginger, it really bothered me that one of the first things they said about Charly was that she needed a makeover. When she was equally as naturally beautiful as the rest of the auditionees. It seemed like they were extra hard on her and were looking for absolutely any excuse to get her off the team, when there were clearly weaker people still on the squad. I thought the women were incredible dancers but gaslighted, for example, fuel yourself properly, and then next breath, erm have you put on weight? I was also struck by the lack of diversity. The comment to Anisha seemed off to me about her not having the proper training/ dance foundation. She was bloody incredible and not sure what they were getting at. She was my favourite and I loved her audition ❤❤😢 I really felt for Victoria and the girl who lost her dad to suicide. I also thought how nice the women were. I started watching this yesterday, and I remember watching Making the Team some years ago. With the accelerated BFF phenomenon, it definitely is understandable that they become so close in short amount of time. They’re going through a high stress, traumatic experience together (short term with auditions and training camp, and long term if they actually make the team). It’s really sad. On top of that, they are over worked and underpaid. Like, why are the cheerleaders expected to “just be grateful” and see this as an honor, making minimum wage when we know DCC leadership are making money for sure - I would be surprised if they were making less than 6-figures. as a professional dancer of 18 years, honestly, dcc is representative of the entire dance industry. coaches are put on pedestals where anything they say goes, and your spot on the team and the opportunities you get depends on your compliance. losing your autonomy and agency in these dynamics is unfortunately common within the sport. i remember when i was 10, one of my best friends got her first period during our ballet class, and to punish her the teacher forced her to continue dancing even though she was bleeding through her tights since the teacher saw it as “her fault.” dance is a world where people are constantly on a power trip and the actual athletes suffer. i’m sure if the girls interviewed were honest they would be immediately kicked off dcc - they’ve kicked girls off for much less.

I’m very curious to see if we get another season of this. The original show, Making the Team, ran for about 16 seasons I think before it was cancelled. But the vibe on that show was different. It was very much “This is important. What we do makes a difference. Look at how talented these women are.” The angle it took seemed to me like they were trying to come from an angle of “Kelly and Judy are tough, this process is tough, but that’s because we want the best. We are representing America and we have to be the best.” Versus the Netflix show where they’re highlighting all of the problems that you could plainly see but weren’t really talked about like that on the original show. I’m also really curious the effect this had on the number of women who auditioned, what opinion the majority of viewers have of the Cowboys now and if that actually negatively effected them.

Thank you for following up. I really appreciate your thoughts. I definitely believe the whole trying out process and being on the team is very mentally straining. I do still feel like they are diverse and picking different types of girls. Judy and Kelly both have have a standard as an example if you can’t do high kicks because of your height you’re not gonna make the team and recently they have talked about making a requirement of a certain height to make the team. I watched the show from the very beginning when it was on CMT. I think it is a great organization and a once in a lifetime experience for the young lady makes the team. I do think you learn a lot of life lessons however I agree with you. I think they could make some changes. I do believe you shouldn’t have to be on point 24 hours a day, especially for practice. I could see being on point for practice if you’re being filmed. I agree with you I think some changes could be made because I do think it is emotionally and mentally then straining on most of the young women trying out and being on the team. I wish they would treat it as a full-time job and pay the women accordingly so they can focus their energy on being a cheerleader . Thank you .

Hi Kiundra! I'm coming to your channel now and I really liked your insights. I'm from Rio and even with cultural differences, many things bothered me about this series. Starting with the objectification of women's bodies, as much as Kelly claimed protectionism, it was clear that girls are purely a commodity. She didn't care about their well-being but whether their image was sellable. Even with cultural differences, it is a series that gives many triggers as all women have suffered and continue to suffer aesthetic pressure. The way they are discarded is also very cruel: I remember they dismissed a candidate just because she was short and there was no explicit height limitation. The way the president laughed at the candidate before dismissing her for being short was very disrespectful. I don't know how important it is to be a cheerleader because in Brazil they don't have this habit, but I thought they humiliated themselves a lot to not be treated in a dignified way. After all, when the girl of Indian origin got hurt, they didn't even look straight in the face. her to dismiss her from the team. Not to mention that no black dancer was featured or at least ONE SPEECH in the series. And honestly, I didn't understand why since they had to be 3x more talented than the white women... Furthermore, I found both Kelly and the choreographer very racist in every way. Even though they are more humanized in some parts of the series, such as at their daughter's wedding, they are the type of people who have a very strong fascist bias. If the average American is like them, then they are insufferable!

I heard the lowest paid Dallas football player makes $795k. There is even one on a $160m contract. Meanwhile these elite women athletes make 30k. Shameful exploitation. There are people making a lot of money from them. The last 15 years before Netflix there is a show called ‘making the team’. Calendars etc. I think their employment contract would be interesting. I haven't watched the one on Netflix but I did watch the show religiously when it would air because I was a dancer and I was heavily considering auditioning to become a DCC. You are bringing up great points but I can tell it is as an outsider of the dance world. Unfortunately this is the reality of that world a lot of the times. The losing yourself, the worship of dance instructors, choreographers, and coaches, and dance companies, etc. You really do have to dedicate your life to dance, honestly. You stop taking classes for even a week and you and all your peers and coaches can tell the difference. It's a very athletic world. They are doing the same amount of training as the men they are cheering for. Now most dancers wouldn't consider it losing themselves because of the strong passion most of them have, it still doesn't negate your point though. Choreographers are infamous for being overly demanding and honestly mean and this in turn makes the dancers want to prove themselves to them no matter what and sadly this can involve self inflicted abuse and such. A former dance instructor I had when I was dancing competitively was a scary lady unless you were her favorite and we knew who they were. She was also the coach for the Kansas City Chiefs cheerleaders. Again she was the scariest coach I had, and I don't think it was a coincidence that she was a coach for a professional team. She was just upholding tradition sadly. Also dance is very much about looks. Most of the time the head or principle dancers a really pretty within European beauty standards, this is not to say they aren't talented as hell but there is that little unspoken rule. The make up thing is not so far fetched because you do have to get used to wearing a full face of makeup and dancing all day, it's not as easy as it looks. Every practice is a bit overkill and I suspect this is for creepy fans of the show more than for the girls' benefit. No dancer gets paid what they should. This is the reality of that field and always has been. This is not to say it's right but I don't think it just falls on the NFL. Though how much their players get paid has always been a problem to me even before comparing them to the dancers pay. Didn't Kelly and Judy start out as dancers on the team? I think that answers the question of their identities. All competitive dance teams make it a point to rally around community. I think it's mostly so the dancers build good chemistry to look well dancing together. Also to nip any animosity in the bud since they do have to be together all the time. Also the smiling in the wrong situations thing... I do this and I make sure to let people know it is force of habit. I think its a habit of being a performer. Not saying it's a good thing, especially if you aren't aware of it. Being a performer from a young age and probably performing for friends and family even off stage can get in you in a mindset to always look pretty and presentable and to share your pretty smile. Trauma response? Possibly.. force of habit? Definitely. Nice video and insights. I might go watch the one on netflix now. Definitely not their first rodeo 😆
