Maybe there is an issue to discussing such a problem on KZbin, but I’d love to hear a reaction from you to Georgia Rule by Garry Marshall. For some reason, this movie didn’t receive much love from audiences. However, it sheds light on the dark issue of child sexual abuse within families and the complexities of the mother-daughter relationship. I’ve always struggled to understand how, in some cases, a mother can’t believe her child in such situations or, worse, even blame them. Is this denial a way to protect the psyche? It pains me that there are boys and girls have to go through something like this. The film itself is warm and straightforward, but not shallow. Would you be able to address such a topic on KZbin?

For anyone that needs to hear this: NEVER handle an abuser the way Belle did in this movie. She did almost everything wrong and endangered both herself and those kids. Do not confront an abuser until after you have arranged an escape plan for the abuser's victims. Always always always put the victim's safety before your hero complex, wait until they can get away from the situation before confronting the abuser. In this case, that would mean they'd need a foster family ready first, and possibly some kind of protection program from the police so that the dad can't interact with them, or at the very least ensure that he'll never be alone with them again.

Thank you! My partner and I couldn't do anything but fall into horrified, confused laughter that the ending was essentially "dox yourself to fix child abuse, and go alone to confront the children's abuser." Publicly shaming and cornering an abuser isn't going to make them stop. More realistically, when they got home he probably would have killed his kids or at least beaten them within an inch of their lives. Incredibly shortsighted on the writers' parts, unfortunately.

I think a big part of Suzu's arc in the film is finally coming to understand her mother's sacrifice. She sees a couple of strangers who are hurting and in danger and does something selfless in an attempt to reach them. Just like her mother. You can see that realization and understanding come over her and it is beautiful.

This!!! I agree very much that a big part of Suzu's grief also came from being unable fathom why her mom did what she did. Well, she basically came to understand what her mother did all those years ago and made a similar gesture. Sure, unlike saving a child getting swept by a current, saving children from abuse is a long-term plan. But the ending was basically going forward in life, adapting to environment. My take, anyway!

I remember when this first came out, people were upset because they thought it would be a romance like Beauty and the Beast. But I adored this movie, I saw it in theatre twice. It's about grief and seeing yourself reflected in someone else. Suzu was drawn to him because he was in pain but dealing with it in the opposite way she did. She went silent, was unable to sing, whereas the "beast" lashed out from his pain. She was in awe of him, and his pain called to hers, and all she wanted was to be there for him the way she wanted someone to be there for her. Heartbreaking but beautiful.

I like how it portrays internet masking in two different lights. Suzu is able to sing and live a completely different life outside of the trauma of losing her mother. I adored this movie up until Suzu's confrontation with the father. I understand the significance of that scene but my suspension of disbelief was pretty quickly shattered by the fact the main adults in Suzu's life willingly drove her to the train station to travel several hours, ALONE, to confront a grown abusive man. My brain just has a difficult time fathoming it, and I feel like it would've been better if the adults hadn't been directly involved in her plan.
@Broeckchen2 ай бұрын

THIS. The ending ruined the movie for me. Grownups sending a girl to confront an abusive adult and when she confronted him ane he falls and goes away scared like no... in real life he could continue abusing them even more and she would be in danger... as someone with family members that went through it the message of "just stand up to them" in the ending felt like a slap in the face
@schmittenanimations1792 ай бұрын
RIGHT!?!? It really threw me off when I watched it. Like not one adult was like "hmm.... maybe we should come with you or contact the authorities instead"? Hello? o_o It'd be different if she naively snuck out or skipped school on her own to help them unbeknownst to the adults but that wasn't the case at all.
@FallenArcher-xp3vj2 ай бұрын
It also just seemed silly that the father would just stop and cower because some random girl showed up. If he could do such things to his own kids I find it hard to believe he would stop for some strange girl he just met. I definitly think the adults if they were going to be involved should of been more involved and gone to the boys home with Suzu. Not just for safety like others mentioned but because it would be a great way to show that there are adults who can be trusted and do care. For what it was though it was a nice story.

Suzu in flashbacks, particularly the one at the river, her hair has alot of color to it before her mom passed away. I subconsciously noticed this the first time around, and it's made clear with Belle's design of how vibrant the model is using colors that she used to wear as a child. Online bullies are their own brand. A lot of them like to fall back on the argument that they should be able to say whatever they want about anyone and if that hurts you it's apparently your fault, not theirs. There's certainly a blurred line between "am I too sensitive?" and "is this person gas-lighting me because they refuse to be accountable?"
@junrobin93352 ай бұрын
Just look up the law of free speech for that. Free speech is like the laws on freedom in general. Your freedom ends where another one's begins. If you spread hate, cause violence, try to actually push someone towards bad habits or danger. That's infringing on free speech. Secondly if you're hurt by something someone says you're allowed to be hurt. You can even just state that you are hurt. And if they got a problem with the fact that you're hurt, then that says a lot about them. Their refusal to take accountability just makes them the bad guy in the first place. There is a difference between some people though. Like with me I am just really blunt and I forget people got no tollerance for it since everyone around me got used to me being me. If I hurt someone it's usually unintentional and I'll work to clear up the situation and properly apologize for the social mishap. So with you saying I feel hurt you can also weed out the bad people from the good people. Who is worth your time and energy and who isn't. Those that never apologize and put the blame on you they're not your friends.
@christiantwist33602 ай бұрын
@@junrobin9335I believe people should be allowed to say anything (as long as it’s not directly insinuating violence-like telling someone to kill/hurt someone else or themselves); however, I also think that if someone is being a jerk, it should be expected for that person to be called out on what they say.

2:34 I love the detail that people might miss that Suzu's mom gave the little girl HER OWN LIFE JACKET before trying to swim back. I think it adds to the meaning and symbolism more about what Suzu's mom did, and what Suzu later does. She is shedding her own protective shield to help protect someone else with it. Suzu sheds her protective layer of Belle to be able to reach out and get to the abused boys, who are on an island of there own, and she puts herself in bodily harm's way to shield the boys themselves and face down the real beast. Suzu's mom actively made a choice to ensure that girl's safety, even if it meant greatly disadvantaging herself, and eventually dying for it. It's rough, and I get why she did it, but daaaang is that a hard call to make when you're leaving your own daughter to grow up without you. I'd probably feel the same way as Suzu, honestly.

And then when you look out for others, it can help you discover, oh if I have this in me for them, maybe I have it in me for me." I was always so timid and quiet and got bullied at school because I couldn't stand up for myself, but as I grew older I would stand up for others who were being bullied. When I went to college, I was able to boldly, and politely, ask people not to swear around me. When I had my son, I had to stand up for him a lot because of his extreme allergies and because he got sick so easily. Now I have no problem with confronting people when I need to. Though I can still be a shrinking violet at times, I also know I can be bold when I need to be bold.

Can't wait to see what movie you'll be reacting to next. And one more thing, I can connect the negative comments and feelings from Belle to another anime movie, that is Perfect Blue. Because we create our avatars, people will see what is on stage, and they believe that's who we are in real life, but we are not exactly the same as we are on stage or online. It wasn't until the next day that I figured out why, and what exactly I think happens in that scene: In that moment, Suzu has risked everything. She's risked losing the ability to sing, she's risked being known worldwide... she's risking _everything._ For the sake of two children that she barely knows. It's absolutely _terrifying,_ especially for somebody as shy as Suzu, but it's still something that she _has_ to do. And in that moment, she understood her mother. And she was able to forgive her, and forgive herself for not being "worthy" of her mother staying. And that allowed her inner light to shine, and be shared with everybody else.

I notice at 17:34 where Suzu is walking by the river (you can also compare her color palette with other animated characters,) that her color palette becomes brighter (more popping) when she is singing compared to how--like the color of her hair is.

Thank you for taking the time to make an episode about this movie!! I've been requesting Belle since the "Your Name" episode. I got to see this movie in the theater opening weekend, and I've been in love with it ever since. I can't tell you what a gift your channel has been. As someone who went to school for both Psychology and Film, and getting to watch two professionals in each field talk about one of my favorite movies of all time and be just as excited about it as I am, it brings me so much joy. Thank you for all that you do! Now if you want something that's the complete opposite tone of Belle, I suggest you guys watch Promare. High octane action, a loud and colorful cast, and masterclass animation from start to finish. I love it to death, but there's probably not a lot to talk about on the Therapy side of Cinema Therapy.

This may be my favorite anime film for personal reasons. fall 2021, the day after my mom passed, I got the U music video as a youtube ad and was blown away by the music and visuals. Almost a year later the weekend before her funeral, the english dub released on streaming and watched it by myself sobbing. It has really helped me through grieving for years now and I saw Belle's character in myself in ways. I know the movie isn't perfect especoally the ending could of been handled more realistically, but I still really love and appreciate it. This video also came out at a perfect time since I've been going through a rough time past few months and gave me a new understanding of the movie and my current struggle rn...

It really shows the different sides of social media. How people can be so hateful careless and petty towards others with no second thought, but also can be a place of reconnection and finding people and maybe even making a difference for others for the sake of kindness and wholehearted understanding that maybe u make a lil difference for strangers...

I think people become detached online. They lack any triggered empathy of seeing someone's face and the self-preservation fear of starting a conflict.

Every time I watch this movie I notice more themes and messages, cool connections. I also notice the movie's flaws, but I just love the movie more and more. I relate a lot with Suzu for several reasons, the music is AMAZING, the animation is kinda crazy but also simple but also beautiful, and the story touches me every time I watch it. I'm glad you guys watched it too! You surprised me by sharing even more connections and insights than I had even considered. Thank you guys for creating these videos and I hope you're doing well!

Finally, I've been looking forward to the day you guys would talk about this movie. It's really good and one I would recommend to people and Suzu's arc throughout is great from being afraid to sing again due to grief from her mother's death and subsequent sacrifice to being confident in her singing ability again and saving someone else just like her mother did. This movie is one that makes me tear up or cry and especially the song at the end where suzu is thinking about her mother while singing hits me in the feels ❤

This is so good! Another musical related anime it would be awesome to see them react to is Your Lie in April. There's a lot to unpack there with all the different character dynamics.

I love the movie Belle. Suzu is one of the few characters I see myself in, feeling alone, ugly and worthless, a waste of space and oxygen. To see how she acts and grows in the film, from the awkward, shy and timid girl, to one with strength, almost gives you hope, even though you know there is no happy ending for yourself in reality. But it's always good to see at least one character you root for in a movie get it.

I think what makes the awkward confession scene so powerful is that it is a painfully relatable human moment. And this is in contrast to the world of U. Even the animation style is hand-drawn and more naturalistic in the "real world" where computer-generated animation is used in "the world of U". This painful second-hand embarrassment moment is just as vibrant as the opulence of U, and I love how that contrast is shown with moments like this.

This made me unspeakably happy to see pop up in my feed, it's just... this was a movie I was lucky to catch in theaters not long after the dub was first released, and hearing "Gales of Song" for the first time brought me to absolute tears as someone that also lost their mother early on (fresh into adulthood right at 18, right before life was gonna begin), and it was such an awakening to me back then. It's one of my favorite movies of all time, it explores the concept of grief and resolution, revolution, resolve, so much love of the arts, it's just such a beautiful movie.

Thank you both so much for choosing this movie, it’s so beautiful I really needed to hear and see this. It cradles the grief, the loss and the journey that we go through in life - reaching for something in a dark and lonely place to find that we are not alone in the darkness and we can still be seen. Thanks again for finding another gem to watch that I don’t think I would have ever found ❤

I can't watch this movie without crying, honestly; there's a lot of feelings and experiences I had a lot like both main characters. I know the depths of her grief since I went through it, too - there was a long period of time when my grielf was all-consuming, and I lost my artistic inclinations for years. My Grandmother, one of my biggest supporters in my life, was there for me when I was in and out of children's hospitals, and always cherished any artwork that I made for her, encouraging me when I started working on animated projects. Unfortunately, she developed a rare, aggressive ovarian cancer and died in 2021. I didn't draw, write, paint, sing, or do anything anything creative for 2 years. In losing my art, I lost my voice and almost myself. Watching Belle ended up becoming a beacon of light when I was feeling so lost.

THIS! This anime resonated with me SO MUCH! I'm 41, and have a 12 year old son, but, he's SO much like me emotionally, and, I saw/see so much of myself and him in Suzu's character. Shy, reserved, impostor syndrome, and expression through creativity -- though his is more open. Me, I write under a pseudonym! lol But, I went to see this movie by myself in theaters, and I CRIED! Just all the lyrics of the songs, the animation -- like was said here, how it did so well with capturing real emotion -- and the way they showed internet hivemind, comments, adoration... It was all so overwhelming, and accurate. I really don't have enough words for what I felt/feel towards this movie... I went into just being a fan of any rendition of B&tB as a general story. But this...this ended up being SO much more, and, it even brings me to tears just commenting on your commentary. This was so beautifully done, and I'm so glad you guys covered this movie. Thank you. 💝

So many topics to civer, so litel time to do it in one comment. Allen and Johno are my mirror, since they said it themselves about this KZbin video. And so I will add that identity, imposter syndrom, fear of abandenment, all of those were here and well explained. But mostly, how various characters are motifs in Suzu's journey: her dad who gives her so much space, her harsh, yet highly supportive bff, Ruka, Kamishin and Shinobu's opening ups. Hell, Peggy Sue going from hater to fan, all of these people are great representitives of Suzu's state of mind!

This point you made here at 16:35 . I have recently been going to therapy for self limiting beliefs and just behaviors I want to fix in general. And I have lost a few friends due to these same things. In turn I would get so frustrated with myself because I couldn’t figure out how to fix these actions and thoughts I had. It was an endless cycle, I’m hoping that with this new therapist I have I can finally make some headway in this. I love this movie! Specifically, I love the art and animation direction of it. So they did something interesting with the animation styles to set the real world and the virtual worlds apart. They animated the real world as you normally would with anime: 2D animation that is drawn. For the virtual world, they used 3D animation, but it’s stylized in such a way that it isn’t obvious until Belle is unmasked as Suzu and she looks and moves very differently from how she would in the real world. That’s because of the difference in animation styles!! I love details like that in animated films. There’s a similar thing going on in Wolfwalkers. To make the wild and the town very different settings, the town and townspeople all are made from very geometric shapes, but the woods and the people and animals living there are very fluid and sketchy.

In "Million Miles Away" she's sharing her hurt that her mother is gone, wishing for her to be with her instead of "a million miles away" in a place she can't reach. Then during the pause when she's having the flashbacks to mom's loss, she makes the connection between her own need to save the boys and her mom's need to save the child in the river. A whole series of realizations that help to free her: (1) Her mom didn't abandon her, she acted on need to help, (2) she still has a connection to her mother in that willingness/need to help others and singing, and (3) singing is a way she can keep that link to her mother alive. The journey from broken to joyful in that song always brings me to tears.

22:28 Good news! You guys have covered another of the director's works before, Wolf Children! The director is Mamoru Hisoda, and his earlier films, namely Summer Wars, also had a lot of that sort of exaggerated posing and expressions, with the humor to boot. It's also another film that looked at the internet, though in a slightly different way than Belle. I would love to see you guys cover that film as it touches on a lot family interconnection and drama. Also, back to gush on Belle, Mamoru Hisoda fell in love with animation again thanks to Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and there are a few shots of Belle in the Beast's castle from Belle that are frame for frame the same as they are in Beauty and the Beast! So this was a very special film for Hisoda to work on as he got to tell his version of this story.
