I would love for you to analyse Cal‘s narcissism and it‘s genesis, the general family dynamic and the effect of Nate’s traumatic attachment injuries on his personality. I find, that one effect of chronic childhood trauma is almost never shown or analysed in depth: lack of empathy and transgressive and invasive affect dysregulation. The Jacobs family is one of the rare examples, where this effect of intergenerational attachment trauma is shown in quite a realistic way. I think this could be so educational if you would tackle this. Especially how one should/can interact healthily with people with these kinds of disorder (besides no contact) and what kind of treatment could actually be effective harm reduction, if Nate and/or Cal would ever be open to (or court mandated 😉) to undergo therapy.

I watched this episode with a friend who said Zendaya was "overacting" in the first scene. I grew up seeing this kind of behavior... the screaming, cursing, threatening, violence, breaking things, crying, family members fighting each other. I even called the police once because they were having a physical altercation at the top of the staircase. I was so scared that someone was going to get seriously hurt. My family criticized me for that and I ended up just accepting that sometimes families get like this... like it was normal. It was so disorienting to realize that some people have never ever seen something like this happen in real life. For me, it was so realistic.

Laurie, the drug dealer definitely knew Rue was a drug addict she purposely gave her the suitcase so she can be in debt to her. And then gave Rue morphine knowing she’ll get more addicted so she will go back to her. When she said the thing about how even if you don’t have money as a women there is something that people want. Laurie doesn’t just seem like a drug dealer but a full blown sex trafficker.

It’s interesting that Leslie visibly panics when she thinks Gia was doing drugs with Rue: and she slapped Rue when Rue went for Gia. Everyone has limits to their compassion and patience, and the idea of Gia being hurt because of/by Rue seems to be Leslie’s line.

And we can tell now that Gia patience and caring for rue it pretty much gone, (her not helping her mom look in the car) she’s just done and honestly I don’t blame her. When are things ever about Gia? When does she get time to be stress free? She should be putting herself first. Maybe her sister giving up on her will finally help her get clean. Maybe she needs to be completely alone. Either she’ll get clean or die and regardless of the decision, it might be better for Gia. She needs to grieve and move past this point in her life, rue is just prolonging her suffering

Something about Lexi that is very interesting to me is how differently she's reacted to her trauma than everyone else. Lexi also lost her father to drugs, her mother turned to alcohol, her best friend is a drug addict who pushed her away and her sister is pretty emotionally unavailable for the most part. I think this will be explored further on the play, and i'm very excited.

you also have to pee like every 30 minutes in opiate withdrawal because you aren't peeing much when you're using. it was one of the more surprising aspects of withdrawal when it happened to me. your bodily systems is beginning to function properly again.

I feel for Gia so much in this episode. I was the one that called out my brothers addiction. I was always the one who told my dad and grandparents "he's lying to y'all." or "He's manipulating you" I told my dad to drug test my brother in 2017 due to some addict behaviors I'd noticed. Our mom died from her addiction 4 years beforehand and I wasn't going to lose him too. We tested him and he failed. After that my dad tried help him get clean with therapy and monitoring his money but it didn't work. it was SO hard watching my dad and grandparents suffer. It pissed me off if I am honest. He stole jewelry and guns from my grandparents when he lived with him to pawn them. I remember them calling my dad and us going over there to confront him. I can still remember when he came in the house and I felt like I was looking at a stranger. My brother went to rehab about 2.5 hours aways for 3 months and lived in sober living home for 6 months. He started asking everyone we knew for money. I tried to contact everyone we knew and tell them he had relapsed and if they gave him money that he was using it on drugs to not expect it back. I didn't say to not give him money but I asked that if he contacted them they tell him that they care about him and want him to get help. When I started getting angry ctexts from people wanting me to pay his debt I had to post on Facebook and explain that he relapsed and ask ppl to not give him money. It was the hardest and most shameful thing I have ever done. I felt embarrassed and guilty for embarrassing him but I was starting to worry for me and my dad's safety and well-being. My brother was furious and he was texting me really hurtful things. I told him I couldn't be in his life anymore until he was clean. That week he found a rehab and checked himself in. He wrote me letters but I still had a hard boundary. I wasn't ready to talk to him. It took us a year to get back into a good place. Now he is 3.5 years sober and he is my best friend. I couldn't be prouder. I say l this to say loving an addict is hard and there is no manual for it. I am so proud of the man my brother is today and he's told me that one of the key moments of him deciding to go back to rehab was me 1. cutting off his resources and 2. cutting him off.

I’d love a deep dive on Cassie’s hypersexuality and people pleaser issues. I always related to her in season 1 because of the absent father/neglectful mother stuff but watching Cassie in season 2 is like watching myself in 2014 and it doesn’t feel good. It makes me sad to read all the sexist comments online regarding Cassie when I know exactly how I felt going through a remarkably similar situation (minus the best friend element) and it wasn’t good. I really feel for her. I’d like one on Nate but I’d also hate it. Does that make sense? There’s NOTHING positive about Nate. I feel so much for him in terms of the trauma he’s experienced, but he’s done nothing to redeem himself. I’ve had my Mum speak to me like Cal did during his rant last episode and it destroyed a huge part of me is2g.

Yeah I’ve noticed people are not really understanding the messages in Euphoria. And how no one in the show is perfect and they are all going through their own battles. They’re quick to just call Jules and Cassie names and say they hate them. We learn why the do the things that they do. And I feel for Cassie, because she loves to be loved bc of that she is a people pleaser. Her and Jules crave love. Genuine or not. And they’ve been through terrible situations. Example: abortion, sexualization, black mail, and nudes being shared, Jules sex life, having someone in the family who is addicted to drugs. So it’s more then just them being a bad friend or person. It’s the effects of what they’ve gone through.

And it's the same thing with sneaking off, she probably doesn't like having to meet him in secret but she doesn't know how to love herself and respect herself enough to ask for more. She'll take anything anyone gives her. Turn out to be Nate but it could've been anyone. Yeasss it's wrong to do that with your best friend, but literally every character has done bad things, the point in Euphoria it's to show what has led them to that

@@KatAlSilva 100% I met a guy in 2014 and was with him for 6 months when I found out he had a girlfriend who lived abroad. He told me it wasn’t particularly serious with her and manipulated me so much that I had a breakdown, lost my job, lost my friends. All because of this abusive relationship where I was being gaslit, lied to, manipulated etc. The abuse came after I found out and his “simple” life was ruined. I already had abandonment issues, BPD and severe anxiety. I’d just ended a relationship before this one and had moved to a big new city alone. I was so taken in by his toxic shit and I can hand on my heart admit I said shit like “I love that I’m your secret.” word for word. And multiple times. You’re so scared to lose this person because they’ve slowly worked their way into your brain and you feel as though you’d stop breathing if they ever left. Cassie is being selfish and disloyal but she’s also dealing with grief, loss and trauma with a Mum who doesn’t seem to care more than how Cassie looks on the outside and a bunch of guys telling her all she’s good for is for s*x and a Dad who left her.

I'm still thinking of that one comment Laurie made that Rue didn't even register, "It's one of the good parts of being a woman. Even if you don't have money you've still got something people want." She will make good on her promise to sell Rue which I never doubted but the way she slipped that in so nonchalantly 😭 Also the fact that she told Rue she didn't have pills and only had liquid morphine but then we see her grab the liquid morphine from a suitcase that has plenty of pills in it. She wants Rue to get worse and worse but pretends otherwise. Absolutely terrifying.

I was so scared to speak up and tell someone because I thought that meant betraying her. I’m still struggling to forgive myself. So it’s nice to see it put on screen that Jules was able to tell her mom, it’s so important

I really appreciate that you acknowledge Gia's trauma. A lot of my childhood looked a lot like that opening segment - I've been the "Rue" in the fight, but 99 times out of 100 I was the "Gia" trying desperately to drown it out. I didn't realize until now as an adult how much that experience impacted my behaviors and decision making, and all I can say is... Gia needs a really good therapist!! And it's very validating for you to acknowledge how much this scenario hurts her even though Rue is the main focus right now.

I think the explanation about the way the brain is built and functions is so important for people to hear. Because I feel like a lot of audience members just judge her for her behaviour and are done with her because they think she’s a horrible person. But Rue is literally so controlled by her addiction, what it does to her brain and what it makes her do. She admits that she doesn’t even recognise herself. Usually Rue is the complete opposite and a very calm person. But addiction can cause you to become someone completely different. So the opening scene leaves a lot of people shocked because they have never experienced or gone through anything like this themselves, which means they can’t even begin to understand where she’s coming from. But her meltdown is actually incredibly accurate and a realistic portrayal of the way a desperate person that suffers from any kind of addiction will behave. And while you as a family member literally don’t know what to do anymore, the amount of aggression can just reflect on you because of that, and start making you communicate in the same aggressive tone in order to get through to them. But as long as they don’t realise their behaviour is wrong, nothing will. Watching the scene reminded me of situations in my own life to an extent that it was actually almost too painful to watch because it felt so incredibly authentic. Not just the ways in which an addict will behave and react in destructive ways. Also the helplessness of family members, who have to watch a person they love become someone so removed from their actual self they don’t even recognise them anymore. I think the show did I great job of portraying the really horrific impact addiction has on a family.

that’s why i love these deep dives. people watch this show and a lot of people seem to perceive all actions and thoughts and feelings as fact and seem to believe the creators support these actions. when the truth is this show is incredibly subjective and shows things from characters points of view so much that you need to actually see the characters as flawed people and not just characters.

1. I'd like a deep dive on gia. I don't think people realise how much trauma she possibly has because of rue being an addict and her dad dying. I can't imagine seeing your sister overdose and talking about killing herself. Gia is struggling to keep herself together and soon enough she's going to explode. 2. Lexi and gia are quite similar but lexi is more logical while gia's more emotional. I feel like more people focus on rue and cassie but not lexi and gia.

Please do a deep dive of Maddy! I feel like she gets overlooked a lot when it comes to people analyzing her actions because people see her as just being sassy and even a “bad person” (because of her allegations against Tyler) but I would love to hear your opinions about the role that her upbringing played in her abusive relationship with Nate and how that affected her actions with the whole Tyler situation. Plus, I feel like there’s definitely a conversation to be had about her being Latina in a predominantly white school with predominantly white friends and how that might affect the image others have of her and the expectations she may feel she has to meet (I.e. feeling the need to exude confidence when she’s just 16/17 and is putting up a persona like everyone else, or even feeling like her environment might not be safe for her to be vulnerable in the way that Cassie is always able to be because others might assume that it means she’s weak and take advantage of her, etc)

I saw a lot of tweets about this episode that bothered me. My older brother was in active addiction for my college years and I learned a lot about addiction and how much it affects the family. It put me in the deepest depression and anxiety I have ever been in and I lost my mom at 15. 1. I saw was praising Rue for yelling at Jules and Elliot. While I agree they should feel bad about the cheating, I don't think that is what Rue was made about. She was mad about them getting her caught. Jules and Elliot did the right thing in my opinion. 2. People also called Elliot a snake. I thought think it was wrong that he told. He should have done it a while ago but it needed to happen. 3. Rue should have told Maddy about Nate because she cares not because Cassie was pissing her off for trying to be positive. It was straight up diversion.

What Elliot did wrong was to not tell Jules that Rue did not owe those drugs in the suitcase and that she would be getting in deep shit if she did not pay for its contents. Rue told him her plan and he knows from his own experience how ruthless drug dealers can be to settle a debt. Jules and Rue's mom needed to know that Rue and her family could be in danger if that suitcase was not returned

Same everyone is convinced that Elliot is a bad guy just cause he came in between Rue and Jules, they did that to themselves by choosing to lie to each other. And I do feel like Cassie was trying to be supportive because her dad is an addict, but Rue feeling judged and wanting a way out threw Cassie under the bus.

I'd love to see a deep dive on Nate. There is just so much to his character. I feel like his entire life he has tried to create this very toxic and hypermasculine version of himself that along the way he has lost who he truly is, that's why he acts so emotionless and cold all the time and is just filled with so many secrets that even his dad has no idea who he is. I think the only time he ever really showed his true self was when he was texting Jules and that's why I think their character journeys mirror each other. Just like Jules is trying to conquer femininity, Nate's journey is to conquer masculinity.

I can say that in Jules' episode with her therapist, she basically admits that Rue was the only romantic female partner that saw her and loved her for herself, unconditionally, the way her mother had. She wasn't competitive and judgmental of her the way other girls her age were. I think Rue loves that Jules is different--seemingly confident and artistic, driven. Yet, she also has a lot of vulnerabilities.

Rue and Jules both struggle with self-worth and core wounds related to loss, which can be a precursor to codependency. You could say that Jules' fantasy is to be perfect in someone else's eyes - a muse - because her own sense of self rests upon what others mirror back to her. This is why she seeks external validation to such a high degree, and is vulnerable to people who seek to exploit that (Cal, Nate, Elliott). Rue, in turn, puts Jules on a pedestal so to speak, perhaps seeing herself as lucky simply to be the subject of Jules' affection. She has low self-esteem and as the narrator portrays Jules as the 'interesting one' as if Rue is not equally interesting as a person. The two of them get caught up in a codependent cycle because Jules gets validation of being 'perfect' and Rue gets validation of feeling 'chosen by someone special.'

We have to be careful with "tough love". Rue has already very little regard for her life, so "tough love" can end up in her deciding to end her life. And she almost did in going back to such a dangerous person like Laurie and telling her that she couldn't pay her the money she owed her. She would not only exposing herself to be killed but becoming a sex slave. I recommend joining groups like Nar-Anon, a support group for relatives and friends of addicts to get better guidance about a specific case. Sometimes tough love may help, sometimes you need a hybrid approach

I’ve been experiencing severe chronic ptsd symptoms and I’m going to share that part of your video with my family! I also wanted to add that I think the tie btw Nate and Jules is gonna circle back re: the idea of being told you’re a regret or cause of others pain. I hope it doesn’t go where I think it might for either of those characters. I’m happy they included how close Rue came to being put into trafficking with no hope of getting away - it can happen to anyone at anytime in this world. Great video for a great episode! As someone who had a lot of trauma at a young age (for reference, the biggest being my mom died when I was 11 after being severely ill for my entire life), I became more like Lexi. For me, I think it's maybe a little bit of my internal moral compass that turned me away from becoming like Cassie, but also, I got my attention for being "good"... a people pleaser, conflict avoidant, an enabler, "unproblematic" which has been a lot of what we have seen from Lexi so far. Being abandoned at a young age, you want to do everything you can to NOT push people away by letting them maybe take advantage of your kindness or friendship. Cassie does the same thing but just in a different way; mostly through male validation which I think has to do with her being a little bit older when everything went down with their dad, she was kind of maybe roped into it a little more and it severely hurt her. Cassie does everything she can to avoid her pain but you know it's there. Lexi just pretends like it doesn't exist.

Did you catch in that episode how there was scratching coming from behind the padlocked door at Laurie’s house? And when Rue was in the bath Laurie said something along the lines of “when you’re a woman there’s always something people want”. What happened between the bathtub and her waking up in the room? How long was she asleep? Even though she got out, now she has the “taste” for IV drugs and is going to be even more desperate. I think Laurie didn’t fully lock her in the room because she knew she already had her. Rue is going to come back looking for more drugs. I rly think Laurie is going try and traffic her or be her pimp or something. She will probably “convince” Rue to “willingly” submit to things to pay back her drug debt. She knew what she was doing when she gave her the suitcase. She knew she wasn’t going to be able to pay it back. It was all her manipulation from the start and it’s going just as planned now. She even said “I knew you’d be in my life for a long time” She makes my skin crawl but that actress is incredible

I would like to see a deep dive into Jules! I feel like people are being way too harsh on her. She has done wrong but I think people are failing to take into account that hypersexuality and a need to be loved can stem from trauma. I'm a trans woman with a very similar backstory to her and being hyper sexualised and fetishized by such a large group of men who would go to any length to stop people from finding out really fucks with you after a while, especially when society at large places our entire self worth onto how attractive/passing we are and we grew up in an age where the only time we saw trans women represented was within the context of "tricking" men. My heart breaks for her because I know exactly why she's doing what she's doing and I know she wants to change but doesn't know how yet.

honestly I think Jules is very solid in her own way she never dishes out negativity or malice, her actions are from her own sense of not being lovable not being worthy of love. I can empathize with her this season cause first season Rue was sooo into her 1000% so much adoration and now theyre actually together and Rue seems, at best, inattentive. As a doubtless controversial aside, I appreciate how this show validates the option of abortion at certain times. (Yes, I think Cassie and her classmates should not be so hypersexual and careless about protection. I also think Cassie's mom should not have allowed her to go away for a weekend with McKay, as unwanted pregnancy can be one of the results.) But, clearly, Cassie and McKay were in no condition to be parents! Cassie was not at all ready to experience a pregnancy or go through an adoption set-up, as she has deep, emotional instability now, including alcohol abuse. A six-week-old fetus is the size of a seed pearl. It is clearly NOT a baby then. Yes, people have a right to their religious beliefs on this topic, but they should not be allowed to impose them on the rest of society.

In no way am I therapist or phycologist but I think that Jules loves to be loved because she didn’t have it when she was growing up. Her mom was a drug addict who barely paid attention to her, she then put her in this institution for who knows how long. While being in that place she had no real source of love. Now that she’s older when people love her she loves this feeling, is a euphoric feeling she has never experienced before

i do know it can be very exhausting to deal with addicts and most time can really affect mental health of surrounding ppl to the point ppl just give up to care/help... but rue is still having support system and resources, the only thing is she must have to care about herself and accept the love from herself to herself for her to be better and healthier. i know in reality many ppl do not have support system and resources to get better/sober/healthier, and left dying in the street because nobody visibly care for them. And to think about reality in our society, clearly reality is much harsher than storyline in tv, but i am so happy that the show can deliver some irl traumas and in hoping for the solution to help ppl with those traumas.

What's sad is that I can relate to Rue a little bit. I've never been involved with drugs or any addictive substances, but I was angry at all the loss I had faced in my childhood, and I took that anger out on other people. I still am, and I still do sometimes. I fought with my mother like that. I had huge breakdowns like that, switching from storming around the house to crying and apologizing profusely. I still have those breakdowns sometimes. It is so hard to cope with so many emotions at once, but like you said, it can be done. And there is an explanation for such intense mood swings. Sadly the first few scene(s)of episode 5 was something that triggered me and brought back mad flashbacks . The physical altercations, the screaming , the destruction is something I grew up with all the time from age 12 to 24 and even now I’m still trying to help, love me, take care of myself . I suffer And is diagnosed with CPTSD, and to be in therapy and to learn to control your emotions and flash backs ( like the side effects of CPTSD is like starting over again . And unlearning these behaviors )

I would love to see a deep dive into the Howard sisters dynamic and their different ways of dealing with the same trauma of their father abandonment and Suze's alcoholism. They also have opposite experiences, Cassie being overly sexualized since a young age and gaining unwanted attention from men making her feel that she can only be valued through her appereance and Lexi being ignored by both of her parents and Rue (all of them addicts funny enough) and not getting attention making her feel like an outsider and observer. I find it so fascinating to see the parallels in their issues and how they have almost have opposite responds to trauma.

I really liked what you said about people being able to recover. I’ve seen a lot of people online saying that Rue is too far gone now (usually with not much knowledge/ experience of addiction), which is not necessarily true. She is very entrenched, but people can be much more resilient than we expect. I also found it really interesting when you explained the emotional processes that happened in the argument - I’ve had very similar arguments to that in the context of addiction, eating disorders and also autistic meltdowns (I’m recovering/ recovered from the first two but still have bad autistic meltdowns every so often) and I’ve never been able to understand what triggers the seesaw from rage to depression to guilt and back, but what you said made sense and I think having a better understanding might help me with my meltdowns, so thank you 😊

I would like you to do a breakdown on Jules. I am not a transgender person but I somewhat relate to her the most, the quote from her flashback scene struck me really hard: "Jules did not hate the world. But when you hate your body and how your mind works, it's hard to enjoy the rest.". I also had something similar at home as she had with her mom. I have a genetic disorder haemophilia (although a mild one) and also had a sever eczema when I was younger, it made me feel fragile and disgusting. Then also at the time being an artistic person never made feel like a 'man I was supposed to be' since I was sensitive. Then of course of all this got worse when my dad got into prison and when he came back he started drinking heavily which resulted in some domestic violence.

Addiction is a hell of a thing, rationally, there’s a choice to use or not to use, but it doesn’t feel like a choice in the moment, it feels like a need. It’s crazy how the brain and patterns of behavior work, it really is a whole chain reaction in the body.

Thank you so much for sharing your past experience. To hear someone that has become successful after dealing with substances abuse is really and truly is inspiring. My life has spiraled out of control trying to conceal my drug habits and finally I had an outburst of anger that completely changed my life forever. I identify with Rue so much and im so happy that this show exist so that people can see an addicts point of view as well as the people who have loved ones that are addicts as well.
