According to M Shadows, the 'king' is just an interchangeable authority figure who rules with fear that you may despise, but realize it wouldn't be wise to resist when he's at full strength. It's based on the old axiom, "When you come for the king, you better not miss." It's about biding your time patiently, in the shadows- wisely -instead of lashing out with no real chance of success. You loathe this figure, but in the meantime you can only placate and appease them. Never losing sight of your true plan to topple them once you're finally allowed close enough to do damage. Publicly you may be hailing them like everyone else in the crowd, but secretly you're keeping score of all the wrongs they've committed such as the bodies in the streets, the orphans of war, and the stripping of rights, etc.

I personally interpret this song as a reflection of our blind allegiance to governments who do atrocious things and yet are still praised. One of my favorite anti-system songs.
@charleysage58274 ай бұрын
I can see that. I love my country but can't stand our government. I served for the people that loved and missed me while I was gone and for my brothers and sisters next to me. Am I patriotic? Absolutely! Do I love and respect the flag? With all my heart because to me it's a symbol of we the people. Agree with me or not, I'll gladly fight for us to be able to disagree.

@@charleysage5827 First and foremost, thank you for your service!!! I served as well in the Army during the Iraqi War (part of the second wave). I feel the same. I was a medic so when I look back on that time, I see that I was there to bring my brothers and sisters back home. For myself (which you might disagree with but that's ok), I love this country but as a Christian I keep myself separated from the politics of it. I still respect the flag and the anthem still gives me goosebumps. But I won't mix my faith with patriotism but rather show respect to the nation I was born into.

Another analogy of this song is that every person in our lives has two sides to them: the person everyone sees in public, and how that person behaves behind closed doors. Sometimes you get the King while every one sees the tyrant and visa versa.

When I listen to this song, my rage is the king! The inner beast rules over me!! I have so much pent up rage from my life just falling apart! I ended up physically broken and disabled. I lost my life, my career, my hobbies and my marriage due to my injuries. My two closest friends passed away, one killed by the police the other from their own grief and I couldn’t help and had to walk away and all the rage from all of that and more has been building up with no release or end!
@HeartSupport2 ай бұрын
From Nerudamann: @JamesBailey-tb8hz I hear what you're saying! Our day-to-day lives are so much better when we can keep a positive attitude, but that's so overwhelming when it feels like things are just building up and up against us. We want to be able to have control over our lives, but that feels impossible sometimes. Something that helps me is finding small things that I CAN control and focusing on that. Just this week I was starting to feel overwhelmed at work by various things, so I took like 5 minutes and went for a walk outside. I focused on the things I could control about the walk. I can't control the weather, unfortunately :slight_smile: , but that was fine. I could control how long I walked. I could control where I walked. I could control the pace. Etc. Hope this helps, even just a little! Those positive things can add up too!
@HeartSupport2 ай бұрын
From Dethendra: @JamesBailey-tb8hz Rage can make us feel so out of control, powerless, and all consumed by the feeling. It sounds like it has taken everything from you and that you are not sure how to contain it and deal with it. I can tell that part of it is grief since you speak of your two closest friends passing away from what sounds like very traumatic deaths. Perhaps the anger, the rage could be stemming from complex emotions that you haven't had the space to figure out yet. What sort of coping mechanisms did you have before all the rage set in? Do you have a support system in place now that your closests friends have passed? I worry that the rage may consume you completely and I will hope that you find a way to put the fire out. Know that we are all here if you should need us.

This is my alarm tone to wake up and when I am about to get off work. Love this song as it has been a Motivator since it first released. This song reminds me to not allow disrespect from others. A great King will be both feared and respected. You as a subject fear the consequences of foolishness. When you could have your tongue cut out people conducted themselves respectfully and with dignity. Something our world kind of needs is a true fear of consequences of foolishness.

Oh good lord, there is SO MUCH to unpack with Avenged Sevenfold! I really hope you do a deep dive like you did with Slipknot! They’ve had 8 albums in 21/22 years, most were with their previous drummer who they grew up with who sadly passed away in 2009 (I think?) and their sound has changed SO MUCH in that time, as has their songwriting, and in particular I have a feeling you’d probably love their latest album because it’s so experimental and the themes within it are so meaningful. Not to mention some of the music videos being incredibly thought provoking like Nobody, Mattel and Cosmic

To me, this song is about people's desire for a strongman and their willingness to overlook all of the terrible things being done so long as they are a part of the political in group. The crowd supports and loves the king, and because of that it's not their tongues being cut from their head, it's not their blood running through the streets and turning the water red, and their children aren't being made orphans. "Royal flames will carve a path in chaos Bringing daylight to the night (night) Death is riding into town with armor They come to take all your rights" I read this as the strongman taking power and killing the dissidents and undesirables that have been made scapegoats and of course the people that wants that praise him for it. Later on, the last line changes to "They come to grant you your rights." Which is sorta what happens in an authoritarian regime. The "rights" of the people are granted by the one in power which allows them to be taken away when it suits their needs. Given the context of all the blood shed, I think it can also be interpreted as "They come to grant you your rites." Which of course is something the King's supporters would cheer him for.
