The song is basically a combination of her feeling imposter syndrome as well as a bit of survivor's guilt. As others have said, she was living in Japan trying to make it in the underground rap scene, but then the pandemic happened and pretty much ended most of those peoples' music careers. At the same time a friend talked her into auditioning for a vtuber agency and hit it pretty big as a result. So while so many other artists that she knew were forced to go back to regular jobs, her music career took off, and some of them didn't take that very well. And a part of her feels guilty that she found success when others that she looked up to and considered better than her didn't find. So she has the part of the song where she wonders about 'what if' she didn't make it, and all the friends that she would still have; followed by her basically scolding herself for feeling bad or missing the old days, that she isn't allowed to be sad about having found success (which, really she's being too hard on herself, success is rarely achieved without loss, and we're allowed to mourn those losses no matter what we achieve).

All of the above. This nails most of what I understand about the song with little more I would like to expand on. At the time she was in the underground rap scene, she, and many of the crowd she was with at the time, made fun of and dunked on the corporate music scene and Japanese idol culture. That was, until she made some friends in that industry. According to what Mori has said, she was not talked into auditioning but did it quietly after hearing a few of the people she knew auditioned. She didn't tell any of them until after she won, there is some left over guilt of feeling like she took a space from one of them... even though there was never a guarantee any of them would have score a spot. She knows she would not be liked by the person she was just a few years before joining Hololive. This song speaks of how she sees herself as a villain for doing that. She also knows some of the people from back then feel she sold out. She is in a better place now as a result. "What is there to miss." Among those she lost were people who she saw as mentors. People who she would not have succeeded at the audition without. The song also speaks of how regretting her choice is a fantasy that means nothing. It is a pity party. For all she 'lost' she gained so much more. Yes, she left people behind but what did she really leave behind? "Was there ever a soul inside." Sure, they enjoyed themselves, but was there a direction to her life back then? She is blessed with a new career, a new circle of friends, a new set of dreams. Lastly, the song is about how she hasn't closed the door to people in the past. She is waiting for anyone to accept her new self. "I'm waiting for you." My final line is the song is great because the wording is not specific enough to allow subjective interpretations to apply to a whole manner of events. I even found some lines have meaning for things that happened in my life. I just find it a good song.

Also worthy to mention the "Happy Ever After" version that cale in the Sinderella physical release (But you can find it reuploaded on KZbin) Is the same song, same lyrics, but with a different instrumental and pacing that makes it feel upbeat and hopeful The original is the melancholy of those days, the newer remix is the moving on from those days and keeping going foward. Not longer being sad because is over, but happy because it happened and she learned so much ever since. She found her place, she met new friends , she got a whole new life and career ahead of her, and she looks into the horizon finally being grateful with what she achieved

Calliope Mori (pronounced cuh-lie-oh-pee) is an VTuber with the Japanese agency Hololive. She debuted back in 2020 as part of their first English language group, HoloMyth. She had been living in Japan (although she is originally from the US) and working as an underground J-rap artist. Signing with Hololive got her a music contract with UMG, a HUGE step up in her underground career, and she said that many of her former friends in the J-rap scene attacked her for becoming a "sellout". This song, End of a Life, was her struggle at the time with her newfound fame and disappearing friendships. It symbolizes a LOT of different endings that lead to new beginnings and the conflicting feelings of nostalgia, guilt, and gratitude that follow when you make such a huge transition! It also plays into her VTuber character lore, which is that she is a Shinigami (death god, or grim reaper in the western world) so she is all about "ending lives" in that sense. I'm SO happy you checked this out, as it's one of my favorite tracks she's ever done! I definitely suggest checking out more of her music! She recently was put in charge of doing a track for the upcoming suicide squad Isekai anime!

For a little context Calli was born in America and moved to Japan on her own to pursue her passion for music, specifically in the Japanese underground rap scene. She would do what you would expect going to bars and dives, performing, and meeting new people, getting involved in the community etc etc. She made a bit of a name for herself with her youtube channel Demondice where she by herself wrote her songs, sang/rapped them, illustrated and animated the music videos for them, and sometimes mixed and mastered for herself (crazy right?) Well around when the pandemic hit she was slated to join the massive Vtuber corporation Hololive as one of the founding members of the soon 1st English speaking generation under the new identity Calliope Mori, and she BLEW UP millions of views on her songs, signing with a record label, huge concerts, the works. Now coming back to the song End of a Life, right when she joined Hololive and was becoming extremely successful the pandemic was hitting and in japan all those bars and dives she and everyone in her old community used to make a living singing at were closing down and those people she considered her inspiration her heroes were having to face reality and go get an office job or retail or something. This seemed to cause Calli quite a lot of guilt feeling like she "sold out" and left everyone behind, it seems in part due to how some of those people changed in how they treated her after she joined Hololive, in a stream explaining the song from her own perspective she ended up crying and saying something along the lines of " I just wanted them to be proud of me" in reference to those old friends and her making it in Hololive. Understandably she has dealt with a bit of imposter syndrome ever since then especially when she herself admitted how she used to look down on the "corporate sell outs" herself back then.

My poor historian and literary heart dies a little whenever I see Westerners unaware of the Greek muse Calliope and how to pronounce it correctly in their tongue. She is a very famous and very important figure in Greek mythology, and there is incredible significance in this choice of name for anyone writing music and lyrics, especially in this case. Calliope (meaning beautiful-voiced) is the chief muse in Greek mythology, and her domain is poetic eloquence and epic poetry. "Mori" translated from latin is "to die," ie. "vincere aut mori" meaning to conquer or die. So Calliope Mori being a rapping reaper has the perfect name.

Calli has a bunch of _very_ personal songs, in many ways. _"End of a Life"_ is probably the most vulnerable and almost never saw the light of day, because opening up that much of yourself in the position she was in can be a risk. Said "position" was that (especially in her first years) she was massively harassed online for getting big after joining a corporation, mistaking correlation for causation. In truth - while it did give her a platform she previously didn't have - she and the other girls joining alongside her were what catapulted that company onto the international market (literally increasing their reach by orders of magnitude), and were a key factor in how big the VTuber scene is today. But where there is someone who finds success there are those who can't be bothered to put in any effort, and instead try to look better by making others look bad... Calli's song _"Off With Their Heads"_ directly addresses these people and - in no uncertain words, but with the same poetic genius you saw here - tells them what she thinks about who the community dubbed "VTweeters" (= accounts with little to no own content who still pretend to be part of the VTuber scene). It's a great dissection of the mindset of a creative who actually made it and all the (often invisible) effort it takes to get there. And as a second recommendation there's _"Red",_ which is an insight into her mixed feelings about being a company VTuber on a character level. The character "Calliope Mori" is owned by the company, so if she were to quit one day, she'd have to start all over under a different personality. Now, recent events in the scene have undoubtedly proven that your fans _will_ find you and keep supporting you (and Calli's previous persona is one of the company's worst-kept secrets). But at the time she wrote the song, it seemed like a genuine possibility that you could just vanish into the ether, never to be heard from again - back to where you were before you found this success.

Almost correct. Hololive already had an international following prior to EN branch(CN was closing down around the time of EN debut due to the Taiwan incident), as well as an active and growing ID branch that debuted 6-ish months prior). Hololive was already aware and had been pursuing international expansion(the international fanbase was what alerted them to the growth potential). But yes, EN branch did explode said growth/expansion due to the audience pool being greater with EN speaking communities. Correcting you on the basis of the statement suggesting that EN's debut was the sole contributing factor, whereas it mostly made it more easily accessible for those less willing to delve into non-anglo oriented content.

One of the members of the Japanese branch, Omaru Polka, has a song called Everblue which I think is a great, but dark song that would be worth a listen, particularly from a mental health perspective. Since Polka is Japanese the lyrics are almost all in Japanese, but there are English subtitles.

Calli is someone that's very wise beyond her years. Alot happend to her and not all good sadly. It did inspire her in giving us these kinds of amazing songs, but it does sadden me that she had to experience these things in the first place. Her song of "the end of a life" (according to a deep dive she did on the lyrics) is mainly about regret with friends she had when growing up. Friends she thought would stick arround forever, grew apart. Friends she wished would stick arround, turned on her, once she became succesfull when Calli joined Hololive. Even to this day Calli wished that her friends stuck arround and could just be proud of her. Now Hololive gave Calli the best genmates/friends and fandom she could ever have asked for. This basicly saved her, gave her people she trusts and people/fans that would listen to her (the good and the bad) and enabled her to get 2 amazing jobs (she works really hard) as a streamer/idol at Hololive and a musician/singer at Universal music. So even if her childhood friends (Also some anties) will not, I and all her Deadbeats (her fandom name) will always be proud of Calli ❤.

It's such a deeply emotional song about Calli's personal journey to success. Calli is always hard on herself and always gives it 100% and then gives more, and somehow gives *even more* to the grind. That complicated mix of emotions were so perfectly portrayed between her hard and rough aggressive rapper style and gentle quieter moments. Always interesting to see other's persepective of the song that don't have the context of watching her rise to fame. Out of all the Hololive talents Calli was the one that stood out and hooked me into the fandom because she sang in a language I understood. Combined with all the hate she gets from people that honestly just come off as jealous and spiteful and following her success this song hit really hard when I realized how much of herself it was actually about and the reflective nature of it. Sometimes I think this song is severely underrated by her fandom because it's so different from the rest of her upbeat style.

I'm happy to see this spread so far and randomly on my feed. at this point its most be fairly explained: she sing of "the end of a life" of singing as a hobby and moving to become famous, saying thanks to those that feed her aspirations and sad goodbyes as she feels like the villain who left them behind to seek greater heights. Calli's early songwriting was majestic to say the least. My favorites are "live again" as a thankyou letter to the community, "off with their heads" towards following you passion and "Crown" that is kinda a continuation of this one where she sings along some old college from back in the hobby days.

I like to imagine that being a sign that she has come to terms with the baggage the original song was built from.

So, some additional context and speculation about some stuff Calli can't talk about due to contracts: Calli's previous persona is the underground artist DemonDice, who as others have said is part of the underground rap scene in Japan. When this song came out, she had been working as Calli for about a year, and her DemonDice account had been completely dead until just before this dropped. She talked briefly in her first stream as DemonDice about not really knowing whether she wanted to continue making stuff under that name. Since Calli is forbidden from acknowledging her identity, depending on which persona she's acting under there are things she can't say. So when she did a breakdown of the lyrics in this, she wasn't able to talk about her "past life" as DemonDice at all. My speculation is that she'd been considering ending the DemonDice persona entirely when she wrote this, and that's a potential part of the meaning that she couldn't talk about when she broke down the meaning. She eventually broke down into tears during her lyric breakdown stream saying she just wanted someone (from her old friends) to say they were proud of her.

As others have mentioned, she did a livestream where she did a deep dive into her lyrics in End of a Life, where if you had a few free hours you could listen to it to really get down to the nitty gritty of her songwriting process. Her lyrics tend to be quite packed with meaning, and she purposefully allows for open-ended interpretation of some lines to connect with more listeners. Now for some simple background information: Named after Calliope (kuh-LYE-uh-pee) the Greek Muse of Poetry, her name meaning "beautiful voiced." Also the name of the iconic steam whistle organ used in circuses. Vtubers are livestreamers (on any platform) that use a drawn or animated avatar in place of their actual appearance. This affords them a great deal of anonymity, as well as the ability to casually address uncomfortable questions posed by chatters by deflecting to the "lore" of their character. Calli's character lore is that she is the Grim Reaper's apprentice who went on hiatus from reaping to follow her passion for underground Japanese rap. Hololive is one of the largest VTuber agencies in the world. Based in Japan, it has 63 talents (all female). Along with their all male counterpart Holostars (23 members) they form the talents under Hololive Productions, a subsidiary of Cover Corporation. Hololive requires that their talents are capable of performing on stage with the use of motion capture tech and 3D models, as well as putting their talents through voice and dance training. The vast majority of VTubers do not reveal their real faces or identities. As others have pointed out, Calli's alter ego is the artist Demon Dice. While this is common information, it is best to understand that this openness about past identity is very much the exception, not the norm. VTuber corporate contracts stipulate that they must never use their corporate identity to boost the popularity of their alternate accounts, and doing so is grounds for termination.

Its a song about her time as an unknown rapper in a niche community of rappers in japan, and now she's finally "made it" (she got signed first by a famous talent agency, and a major record label) and thinking that its the end of an era in her life where she was just another unknown member of a tight community that was important to her. "End of a life". Calliope Mori (stage name of real rapper Karen Calanni) is an Texan American who has lived in japan for a fairly long time, a musician and "Vuber", meaning she uses face tracking software to take the appearance of an anime girl. Howeve, unlike you who puts their real face on camera, Calli uses facial recognition technology and 3d modeling to present an anime inspired avatar Calli is a part of Hololive, the biggest V-Tubing agency in the world. V-Tubing, at the time, was largely a Japanese thing. There were a few English V-Tubers, here and there, but not like it is today. Calli, along with 4 others, were chosen to be the first round of Hololive's expansion into english speaking content creation. Their success was phenomenal, and very fast. Every single member of that 1st generation reached a million subs in less than a year. This success brought tons of opportunities, including merchandise sales, concerts, record deals, collaborations with mega brands like One Piece and Metal Gear, basically everything she had ever wanted. In her time before Hololive, she was a member of the Japanese Rap scene. She is American, but moved to Japan because she loves the country and it's music culture. While there, she was an outsider struggling to fit in, until she made a tight knit group of musician friends. They had some small success, each releasing albums, music videos and the like, but nothing earth shattering. They did, however have each other. So basically, over the course of about 10 months, Calli went from struggling with her friends to being one of the biggest V-Tubers in the entire world, and launching V=Tubing Culture in the West. There was some pushback, of course, and some jeleousy. A lot of it was friendly, and though she has never outright said so, some of it was probably not. This song is basically her coming to terms with all of it. The success guilt, the transition, the gratittude to the people who helped her in the beginning, and her looking towards the future. For some more context, check out the song "Crown" by Boogie Voxx They were part of that crew with Calli, and had a bit of success, and this is a collaboration between them talking about those previous days, and where they are now. It's half in Japanese, so you may need to have it translated. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYTakGN8os-ge6c Anyway, so happy you are checking out one of my favorite content creators, and hope you enjoy your dive into them, if you choose to go deeper into our "rabbit hole" as we call it.

XIII - Death, Endings, Beginnings, Transformation - Even as we move into the next stage of our life with courage, it is okay to mourn the one we left behind. Even as we grow beyond our old flaws and biases, it is healthy to look back on our ignorant, younger self with love and compassion. Even if we move into a state of life that younger self feared more than a literal death, we must nurture hope and abjure bitterness. Easier said than done, but necessary.

What I love about Calli's music is that you can enjoy it on its own and find your own meanings, but if you know her and some of her history, you can also get where she's coming from on a more personal level. This, "Off With Their Heads" and "Wanting, Getting, Wanting" by Demondice are three of my favorites because while they are personal to her, they hit me on my own personal level as well.

You should definitely listen to some of her other songs. Her whole theme is Grim Reaper but she’s a live streamer. She has so so many good songs. She’s well known in the East and has a fairly big following back home here in the US.

Nice! This is my favorite song by Calliope Mori. It looks like others have already explained the story behind the song and the lyrics pretty well so I won't go over it all again, but according to her own words, while it has a story behind it specific to her, she is happy for others to find their own meaning in it and interpretations of it as well.

I'd like to draw your attention to IRyS and her song Gravity. As best as I can tell it's a song about depression and recognizing others feel the same way. Depression is something that, sadly, seems common amongst vtubers. There might also be a number of other good choices amongst the different holomems but I'm not one to speak on anyone outside of the English branch. If I can insert something, I think the whole thing of shipping culture doesn't help with depression. In fact, I suspect that shipping might at times make things worse due to pressures from the fans. I wouldn't be surprised if friendships could also become strained due to it.

I love Callis songs and within them, are (at least) two, that touch me every time (to a point that it gives me goose bumps). One is this song here "end of a life" and the other is "Cursed night", those are the songs where Calli expresses things about herself, about how she feels (actually, she posted a comment under her "Cursed Night" video here on KZbin, to ensure the fans, that she's fine and they don't need to worry). She also has a song, that's other but somehow the same category, in "Off With Their heads" she less talks about herself but it's more a note addressed to her haters and enviers. Well, this reaction was in my recommendations and I love reactions to songs I really like, so this was a welcome surprise, thx for your video!

so this song was a personal one Calli did never intending to release it. a little background; Calli moved to japan from the USA, she was a major "weeb" growing up and wanted to try to make a life for herself in japan (call it following a dream). When in Japan she fell in with the underground rap scene, and there she learned from a number of other rappers and became a minor celebrity as the rapper "Demon Dice" (she doesn't hide this fact) in the japanese underground rap scene, performing in clubs and running a youtube channel. Rap is already a limited subgenre of music, but to do it outside of america (in japan no less) and to not even become a star but rather a bar performer means she was a bit of a niche act inside a niche field. So she wasn't making a living in japan rapping, though the group of friends she ran with in tokyo all wanted to make it as music stars in the japanese music scene. this song sings about those days of her life. then the pandemic hit, and those bars and clubs were closed by the lockdowns, and everyone in the underground music scene were forced to quit and get real jobs. I believe Calli was working as both a waitress and a convenient store clerk; neither of which would allow her to renew her work visa and stay in japan, furthermore her found dream of becoming a music industry star in japan was dying along side all of her friends. Into this moment she was encouraged by someone to try out for a vtuber agency called hololive. Hololive WAS a bit unique amongst vtuber agencies because it had it's own music lable, and was producing "vtubers" aka virtual youtubers (people who stream and produce content behind an anime avatar) with a japanese "Idol" theme (japanese idol culture is a conversation of it's own, just know that Hololive specialized in musical talents and performers, which made them unique at the time in the vtubing sphere) She passed the audition and debuted as one of the founding 5 members of Hololive's English language branch HoloEN (this was in august of 2020, so the pandemic had been raging for about 6 months by this point in time). And she was a major (by youtube standards) hit almost immediately. Hitting a million subs in just 3 months, her first single released (excuse my rudeness but can you please RIP) hit 20 million views in just weeks. every song she released was hitting tens of millions of views and it was instant success beyond her wildest dreams when the money started flowing in and she could quit her 2 day jobs. However her success was greeted coldly by her friends in the old underground rap scene. they all had to abandon their dreams, and yet Calli was hitting it huge both in Japan and internationally, and she was doing it as what they perceived as a "sell out". She had thrown away who she was (Demon Dice) and became an anime girl on the internet, and the jealousy was very harsh. Essentially her friends all cast her out as a betrayer of their dreams and a sell out. worse for Calli is many of those friends were mentors, people she believed were better musicians/rappers then herself. This caused a major existential crisis which is often referred to as imposter syndrome; something she struggled with really really hard. She was succeeding yes, but she was doing it as "someone else", she was succeeding yes, but she was succeeding where "better people" had failed. her success was so gigantic that she really struggled hard with it, and throw in the betrayal by her friends and you get a lot of hurt and loneliness. which is where this song was penned. trying to put to words her feelings about imposter syndrome, unexpected and (to her mind) undeserved success, and the anger of former friends making her feel like a traitor. Hope this helps!

A good friend of Calliope Mori and an occasional collaborator called "Gawr Gura" (they are both "V-Tubers" and members of the same Japanese talent agency) is an interesting singer who co-wrote a song called "Reflect". it delves into a duality within a talented young woman who is almost overcome with self-doubt. It's sung from the perspective of "both sides" of her psyche, one wanting to get on with her life while the other is always beating her up mentally and telling her that she doesn't deserve success. Most of the song is sung in Japanese with occasional English lyrics; however, English subtitles are available if you turn on the closed captions. Since your channel is about healing people emotionally and setting them on a good path I think this song is "up your alley". Just one more thing about her character, she is a "shark girl" so her background is aquatic, purportedly a past resident of Atlantis. Gura is typically a very cute but snarky goofball so she surprised many people when her first song was so serious and introspective.

So, this is a smaller thing I haven't seen from the comments: you actually have two choices of pronunciation for Calli's name! An English pronunciation would be kuh-LAI-oh-pee, but due to the nature of Hololive talents, Japanese pronunciations can also fly (in this case, KA-lee-oh-peh). And an alternative to both is always Calli, as if you were referencing towards the shorthand nickname for California.

Oh god, the whole intro, lol. Ca-L-eye-oh-pee is how you pronounce it. As for anime... yeah. And yeah, usually anime stuff like this has a lot of meaning. Nobody physically died, but a big life change. Small time rapper to big time idol. One past song directly disparaged the idea of a rapper-idol in a line.
