In her blue jeans video she meets this man (who is her age at the time), in her born to die video he's the cause of her death, and in this video her memory is haunting him in his older age (she has the same bathing suit on as when she meets him in blue jeans) (the older and younger version of him are both in the west coast video too!)

Back at the UV era there was a theory on tumblr that Lana is actually a ghost in this MV. THere was a whole debate about why she died and why she continues to haunt him, one of them being that he was responsible for her death. As I recall, the scene where he sees her swimming and makes the sign of the cross was one of the main points that gave birth to this theory.

One of her best videos is Chemtrails Over The Country Club. I think you'd enjoy that, has a "women who run with the wolves" feel to it. The song is excellent too, finding peace in the mundane with your girl friends. There's a clear distinction between Lana's earlier work (focused a lot on provoking issues, substance/sexual abuse, daddy issues etc.) and her later work... I think a lot of the comments suggest you go explore her earlier work because it has a stronger sound but I think her later work is where you'll fully enjoy and embrace her due to the lyrical content and her insane self-awareness and clever writing.

I believe its part of a story about when she was dating this (here portrayed as) older man. He used to be in West Coast video. West Coast lyrics said "I'm leaving You for the moment, boy blue" and that she "sees him swingin'" what is a metaphor for cheating. So chronically Shades of Cool says how she can't change her gloomy (blue) lover, telling about him dating other women, him being a drug addict. Then we got West Coast where she tells she is actually leaving him for the same actor portrayed in Born to Die and Blue Jeans. I believe she comes back to East Coast and New York because she said she's leaving the older lover "for the music" and in Brooklyn Baby we can hear her singing that she came back to singing jazz with her boyfriend that plays in the band. Then, next song on album is still about being cheated on, and it's Sad Girl. May be meaning that she believed she will be happy leaving him, but she feels like no one can replace him. "His Bonnie on the side makes me a sad sad girl" Then we got Pretty When You Cry, in which she says "All those special times I spent with you, my love" still thinking about how the past lover hurt her and lyrics: Don't say you need me when, You leave and you leave again. I'm stronger than all my men except for you" I believe it's a whole story. In Honeymoon album she seems like trying to heal from this era and this toxic relationship but she is still hurt. That's how I see it at least. You guys can correct me if my interpretation of the plot is wrong

The lyrics "and when he calls, he calls for me not for you" could also very well be a reference to when she said that same line in her cover of a Nina Simone song titled "the other woman" (from her "ultraviolence" album)
@lilisannaosou Жыл бұрын
She has a lot of songs with the theme of "the other woman" and I can't understand why I felt so connected to it, I still don't know if it can be related, but in her case, she had an absent mother during her childhood and in my case, my father was very absent in my upbringing...he never liked to talk to me and if there was a scale to define how much between him and my mother I wanted them to be present in my life, he was always below from the average. But however distant, I always felt more protected when he was around, and when he wasn't around, I didn't feel like a normal child.... I never managed to have friends, bring friends to my house, create deep bonds of friendship , getting along with ex-boyfriends...or relatives who distanced themselves from me...

You should give a listen to an unreleased song of hers called "cult leader", its an outtake from the ultraviolence album. The song's lyrics also talk about this Jim person that she often mentions, especially in the ultraviolence song. I would be curious to see what you think the song is about, many people say its about Jim Jones, it's one of her darkest songs tbh, Lana herself was in a cult in the past, in a 2014 interview she said "I used to be a part of this, I'll call it a sect. There was this insane charisma about this guy who was a leader of the cult, he surrounded himself with young girls. But then i found out this guru wasn't a good but a bad person. Eventually I left the sect, the guru believed he had to break people before he can build them up again" its a really disturbing story tbh, this interview itself is really hard to find.

I believe he's representing an old man who never got over his dead lover & sees her ghost everywhere, thus the drinking & the mournful blue vibe. The last scene, he has to get drunk to still be able to feel her dancing with him for a brief moment until she literally slips through his fingers...

And in the music video imagines being with Lana. She appears in the pool the first time, but then she is not, cause he imagined of her. And that's why she says she can't break through his world. Not, Mere, sitting her roasting Lana's lover for several minutes straight. I'm lmao. But I think you get the type of guy that Lana was attracted too or is attracted too - don't know if its still, yet the description that you grasped is what we know of men that have come through her life. This song I think fits in lot with Lana having both types of "parent holes" and in trying to fix it in lovers while also some point realising that she can't and leaving him (them) which we see in later songs. I want to say that this might be another clear mention of the "Bill" who is the unconfirmed person from Lana's past with whom she was romantically involved, who was also the subject of "Black Beauty" and "Hundred Dollar Bill" along with other a few other songs. Anyways, great interpretation, Mere.

There's a connecting story that runs thru some of these mvs. It starts from Born to Die mv where Lana dies, and part 2 is Blue Jeans, part 3 is Shades of Cool, and lastly part 4 is West Coast mv where in the last scene she is again burning in the fire, like the way she died in part 1 Born to Die mv. All these follow the story that their teenage love(as shown in BTD mv) was so strong that even when she died, he kept seeing her soul till he is old. One reference is Lana swimming in the pool in Shades Of Cool mv with her eyes above water, like crocodiles, just like they are shown in Blue Jeans mv, and her white dress is repeated here to show that reference! Another reference is in last scene of West Coast where she is buring in fure but she seems alright, because its her soul now. She has already died in the Born to Die mv. Do check those out and you'll love how the story follows thru the visuals!

8:11 I wonder if those lyrics are parallel to her "Sad Girl" lyrics. Maybe in this moment shes mentioning the acquisition of the upper hand of being or feeling like the favorite, maybe Bonnie is another girl of his who is lonely aka blue because he is spending his time with or thinking about Lana. Maybe when she says Bonnie's blue shes mentioning his back and forth between multiple women and how it effects their mental states Sad Girl: "His bonnie on the side makes me a sad sad girl" Shades of Cool: "I'm one of many, Bonnie's blue." Sad Girl: "Being a mistress might not be something you would do, But you haven't seen my man, hes got the fire and he lives with it." "Watch what you say to me, careful who you're talking to, I'm on fire" She has the same edginess and attitude but shes bothered and expressing an emotion that she's still in, and she talks about him in a good light like hes worth whatever down sides. Shades of Cool: I can't do nothing bout his strange weather. Unfixable. Hot weather in the summer, High neglectful lover. You're crumbling sadly. At this point it sounds like she's not even mad anymore shes just tired of dealing with him
