This song was written by Roger Waters who lost his dad as an infant. This is about him and his Mom living life wishing Dad was there. Of course the band would think of Syd . I would like to add Syd did a lot of LSD but he had (not) friends who would break into his apartment and put LSD into his food and drinks in the fidge, and not. tell him. This would make most sane people start a journey into mental illness questioning their sanity.

My brother and I were both addicts unfortunately he lost the battle and Pink Floyd was the common ground we had. Listening to this song just hits different cause he was the only one who understood me. I’ve never been the same since.

When I was a teenager, my dad was really cool and would listen to the music I like and always give it a chance. I showed him Radiohead, he showed me Pink Floyd. We still talk about those two bands today. It's been 25 years.

This was written in tribute to Syd who left the band because of mental and physical health issues. David and Roger missing their good friend while noticing its important to be present and freeing yourself to enjoy life to it's fullest.

Syd and David used to sit in their room playing songs on the radio together hence the radio in the beginning the song, the mouthing of the guitars was what kids did on air guitars when they couldn’t really afford a guitar. The song is David reminiscing the early days before syd left and the good times they shared as kids hence David Gilmore wishing syd was here!

This band saved my life. 10 years ago i was going through a difficult divorce, and lost everything. I was engaging in copious substance abuse, because i didnt have the coping skills and the want to get better. All i wanted was to not hurt anymore, and the substances were the easy way. I considered ending it all many times, and the only thing that stayed my hand was the knowledge that my actions would leave my family with immense pain that they had no answer to, and no way of fixing it. They didn’t deserve it, and at the end of the day, I couldn’t follow through. And it was the best decision that I’ve ever made. Stay here. No matter what you’re going through, there is hope and there is someone out there who cares. I would much rather spend time and listen to your story and commiserate than attend your funeral. Stay here with us.

This song reminds me of Marco Simoncelli. He died from a MotoGP crash in 2011 and Valentino Rossi (a fellow rider/ 9 time world champion) put lyrics on his helmet from this song and I cried for like 5 minutes straight

As much as I love the Pulse performance, there is a sweetness and melancholy in the original album version that is unbeatable, in a way that is much more intimate. The way the song was produced feels like you're in a small room, with a small group of friends, and one starts plucking at the strings, singing his heart out in memory of a lost friend. It's a gem, truly hard to replicate in a large venue. Try the album version sometime, on your own. If you lost someone, it will hit it very very hard, specially if you know the meaning behind the lyrics.

My dad and I would listen to Pink Floyd. I saw them in concert in 1994. Amazing! My dad passed away in February of 2022. I miss him so much and thankful I have Pink Floyd’s music to help me feel close to him.

I agree. I've listened to most of Pink Floyd's and Roger Waters' songs. I always think of the much later 'High Hopes'; to me, it's much, much sadder than 'Wish You Were Here.' Time is screwing us all.

I have always found, or told myself, that I’ve needed to be in a specific mood to listen to Pink Floyd. Ironically, the only time I listen to them is always randomly. My friends and I had a schoolmate die in a car accident a couple weeks before we started our senior year. This song. This effing song. I remember being 17, sipping a bud light in a truck bed on a fold out chair with a group of my buddies with this song on repeat. We were devastated . He is buried about 20ft away from my younger cousin who also died in a car accident just before he graduated high school.

I didn't get Pink Floyd in my teens. I was like "How long is this intro? When does the song start?". But a few days after my grandpa died, I had to prepare a presentation for school and I just listened to what randomly came next on youtube. Probably because I looked up a few Pink Floyd songs before (again didn't really care about them) this song began playing, but this time it hit so deep. Pink Floyd has been my favorite band ever since. No other artist touched me as much through lyrics and music as they did.

Thanks for your reaction and diving into Pink Floyd. I was fortunate to have seen them live in their final tour in May of 1994. They were one of the most ethereal sounding bands that I have heard in my lifetime. I can assure you that all 65,800 people there were mezmerized as I was throughout the entire concert. ...as you pointed out: 'the music is rather evoking a lot of feeling' in contrast to the lyrics, but one can also interpret the music differently... as telling the same story without words... a fight between numbness and being present on stage, wavering forwards and backwards... thats how I always feel, when I watch especially this live version of it... 💖

Wish You Were Here and The Wall need to be listened to as albums -- they tell a story. To a psychologist, they tell a very interesting story about personality, the self, people boxing themselves in or imprisoned by what other people did to them while they were growing up.

I know what this song is about. To me I heard this song playing while I was riding home with my grandpa after my brother had just died. The sunset was absolutely beautiful over the Sonoita sky. I'll never forget that moment. My lost hero spent in song with my ultimate hero. Both in tears, even though he has no clue who Pink Floyd was. A band my brother introduced me to.

It amazes me that I'm 60 now, and I grew up listening to Pink Floyd as a young boy, being captivated by the lyrics and music to the point of joyful tears, and now I'm watching generation after generation of young people falling in love with the same exact music, having a connection to it with the same intensity that I felt so many years ago, and every day since then. Incredible reaction, as always! The song (and another (pair of) song(s) on the album, Shine On You Crazy Diamond (1+2)) IS about their former frontman, Syd Barrett, but it was less addiction to LSD and more the fact that he had SEVERE mental illness that hit in his early-mid 20s, and just sort of came undone. The LSD certainly didn't help, but I think that the general consensus from health professionals who know the story is that he had some sort of schizoaffective disorder that was emerging even prior to the drug use. It's a really tragic story. I think it was Gilmore who told a really rough anecdote: they were in the studio a few years after he left, and an old, disheveled overweight guy came in and was just watching them. They started wondering what the hell this old, weird guy was doing hanging out in their space, and then after a while it clicked: it was Syd, who was their age. His illness had so ravaged him that he was literally unrecognizable. The whole thing deeply affected the band, and even to this day a good 50 years later they noticeably have trouble discussing it.

When I was in college we all used to hang out and drink in the dorms. Then the guitars would come out and we'd all sing songs. My friend and I were the only ones in the group that knew all the words to this song so we would sing this together. When he died, I sat on the floor in my darkened dorm room and played this song over and over and over on my Walkman until the tape snapped.

So I just lost a friend who I'd been friends with for 30 years. We went through separate terrible childhood traumas and got each other through them. We fought through addictions together and sobriety. We continued to try to navigate mental health issues together throughout our lives. She died 2 years ago after a long long health battle. I have her ashes in an urn on a shelf in my house. Honestly I'm kinda lost without knowing she's here on earth somewhere. This song kills me every time. Saw Pink Floyd in 1994. I'm going to see David Gilmour in November 30 years later in NYC. I really do wish she was here.

Pink Floyd is one of the greatest group of all time with original and experimental music like Queen was in a different kind of music but as much original and experimental music. At that time many artists was searching to create their own music instead of copying music from others. You should also hear "Great gig in the sky" and when you will search for the history of this song and the girl who sang this song at that time, you be once again amazed of the originality and open mind they had to create such a beautiful peace.

This song means so much to so many. I lost my sister at 19 she was 24 im 32 now and I didn't realize it then but she was probably my best friend I've ever had. I miss her even more now I'm going through a really difficult time currently and feel like I'm loosing myself. Trying to hold on for my daughter and be the best father I can be is difficult but I know I have to and seeing her smile and giggle makes my world a little brighter in the dark. She shares her middle name with my sister Elaine it felt like a way to have a part of her back. I'm not sure what compelled me to right this but I felt I needed to.

I know you don't know me but please seek out help from who you can. I am overly critical of myself and even when things are going decent I will often feel like I have failed everyone around me. I have been in that place to the point where I have gone on a drive to do the deed but I was able to snap myself out of it. After that I knew that if I didn't do something different I would get to the point that I would carry it out and I knew that was not fair to myself or my loved ones. I have been in off and on counseling for around 8 years or so now and while I can't say it is easy and I do not have off days the tools they have given me and knowing that I can reach out to a third party helps when I am having trouble. Seeking help does not make you weak, in fact it makes you stronger to be able to admit you need help.

We must have patience when recovering with such losses, as they do take time. I know how much hard times can bring up old memories of happier times. This very often can lead to you feeling helpless, like you'll never be able to find that place of peace again. Regardless of how strong these feelings may be, we must never let ourselves be so tied to the past that we can't move forward. I know it's cliche, but the grass truly is greener on the other side, even if you can't see it now. We must pick up our heads and always strive towards these greener pastures. I know you will make it through these hardships and be there for your daughter, you have got this!! I'll be praying for you.

Loss certainly is such a heavy weight, and a deep sting like no other. Losing someone makes things a little darker in our lives. Remembering our loved ones can bring so much sorrow that they're gone, but so much joy to remember the time we once had with them. I'm so sorry you are going through a hard time right now. Sometimes, life is just so overwhelming and has so much to offer. We can often lose sight of ourselves in the midst of it all. Do *not* fall to the weight of these tests, you are going to come out of this stronger than you ever were. In life, the trees with the strongest branches have endured the most challenging of winds. You truly are here for a reason, and your purpose is *so* significant. I know your daughter looks up to you in ways I could only imagine. You are such a light for her, and I know she is such a light for you even when things may seem dark. I really do appreciate you reaching out and trusting us. From Ryan270624: @alexcrf250x Yeah it really hits a chord with me as well thinking about losing my mother about the some time you lost your sister. So many things remind us of them not being here and you realise how special they were. I love what you have written about the special bond you have with your daughter as well. I've been in some dark places too and being around my daughter just being herself gave me that little bit of sunshine to know that I had to keep going. The way she just loved me anyway despite how I felt about myself eased my pain enough to keep going. Dude you've written a couple of brief sentences but I can see how important she is to you, how much you love her, and how hard you are striving to do your best for her. Parenting is hard and there isn't any instruction manuals and everyone has their opinions that often leaves us questioning our judgement. I want to encourage you though, you have absolutely nailed the most important parts of parenting - you love her, she knows she matters to you and you are doing your best for you. I believe Elaine would be so proud of her brother. Keep going and keep reaching out because you matter and you don't have to struggle alone.

In my opinion...this is the best album they produced. It is seamless. And meant...to be listened to in its entirety as an album. Drop the needle...listen to Side 1...flip the album...drop the needle...listen to Side 2. There is no other way to understand this song without the other tracks

Lost my mum to cancer two months ago, on her and dad's wedding anniversary. I think of her every day. Have always regarded Wish You Were Here as one of my favourites

Having a song you love and can think about in a happy way in terms of thinking of her may help. The Story in Your Eyes by the Moody Blues (weird, but I used to listen to them with her as a kid all the time) is mine. Wish you were here is a beautiful song and my best suggestion is to appreciate the beauty of her in your life when she was there

It's hard to watch the ones we love go in such a hard and difficult way. I took time for me to heal. It took years to heal but I can say now the pain is no longer there. I miss him time to time but the memory's are more filled with joy than sadness. I understand your pain and know you are seen and heard.

From FurnaceFest_Fans: @GryphLane I lost my mom to a brain aneurysm a few years ago. She lived Pink Floyd too and that funny cause Pink Floyd most definitely always reminds me of her. It was hard for a while. I still think of her all the time. Things have slowly gotten easier it's still a process. I hope you get through this and stay strong. I can't suffer anymore, I cry and I write. I have written to much, I have cried so much.....Tired of this fight. But tonight, not alone I chose to be. a new light I have found. You and I .... yes With Me....we picked ourselves off the ground. Ian-Patrick.
